Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nominations

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame announced the nominations for the 2017 induction ceremony today. There are a lot of great artists on this list and all deservedly so; however, only 5 will make it through. The nominees are as follows:

  • Bad Brains

  • Joan Baez

  • The Cars

  • Chaka Khan

  • Chic

  • Depeche Mode

  • E.L.O.

  • J. Geils Band

  • Janet Jackson

  • Jane’s Addiction

  • Joe Tex

  • Journey

  • Kraftwerk

  • MC5

  • Pearl Jam

  • Tupac Shakur

  • Steppenwolf

  • Yes

  • The Zombies

With every list of nominations, it starts discussions about who is missing and what a broken system the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame really is.  Bands that are left off bitch about it and so do fans.  What I find funny is that bands that used to bitch about it suddenly make mention of it all the time when they finally get in (KISS…that one is about you).

So, are you wondering if I am going to complain about who was left off the list…yet again? Well of course I am!!!  Where the heck is Def Leppard?  I know I am biased as they are my favorite band, but why aren’t they nominated.  The owned the 80’s and had 2 Diamond Albums…TWO OF THEM!!!

Oh yeah, where the heck is Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, T. Rex, Motorhead, Nine Inch Nails, Soundgarden, The Doobie Brothers, Ozzy, Bad Company, Motley Crue, etc….  I could go on and on about great bands not in the Hall, but I will leave it at that.  Who is not on the list you would like to see?

Which one of the nominees would be your Top 5?

I would pick the following:

  • Yes – Sorry, this is a no brainer.  There are not too many bands as good as these guys.
  • Pearl Jam – Probably the best band that came out of the grunge era and no doubt deserve to be included.
  • Journey – Only the Journey from the 70’s, 80’s & early 90’s.  No one after Steve Perry left.  Sorry – but after he left there was no more magic.  None of the songs or albums held a candle to anything before.
  • Electric Light Orchestra (E.L.O.) – Another great 70’s band.  They were a unique band with their own unique sound.
  • The Cars – Loved me the Cars.  In the late 70’s & early 80’s they could do no wrong.  Still listen to them on a regular basis.

The public can participate so go vote at the Rock Hall website.

Okay, those are my picks.  Let me know your thought, opinions, comments or whatever you want to say.

    1. I agree with you and Mike about the five best choices. I’m also partial to Depeche Mode, but doubt they could successfully compete with the five bands you picked in terms of their influence or body of work. Janet Jackson certainly ranks high in both influence and body of work, however I don’t think of her as ‘rock and roll.’

      1. Janet isn’t rock, but the HOF is no longer just rock anymore. They are all over the board with their nominations and inductees. She stands just as much of a chance as the next one, but I am still partial to the rock acts.

  1. I dunno who I’d pick, honestly I tend to think of the R&RHoF as a bit of a farce. Not unlike the Academy Awards. It’s all so screwed up, whatever they chose to do is likely already decided by those with more power than we’ll ever know. So be it. Let them have their fun, I say. It doesn’t really matter.

    1. I agree. It doesn’t really matter, but I find it funny how opinionated people get about it and how much controversy the bands make by which former band members are invited to the show. Such major egos showing their true colors.

  2. If it made any difference or was of any sort of importance, I’d be voting for Jane’s Addiction. I hope they get it (they won’t) cause their influence on ‘alternative rock’ can’t be understated.

  3. I would interject my opinion, but get the feeling that I’d get dog-piled on…so all I have to say about the nominees is that Janet Jackson should be at the bottom of the list – but all of the nominees still deserve their nominations.

Music is far less subjective than films, so comparing HoF nominees to Academy Award nominees is comparing pineapples to potatoes.

    1. Not from me. Everyone has different opinions and that is awesome or there would not be so many different styles of music and artists. JJ would not be my first pick either though she has numerous hits just not my favorite out of this group.

      1. She’s not my favourite out of that group, either – but I do like the diversity of artists that were chosen. Apparently, many do not – just my take on the tone of the comments given before mine.

        1. I prefer a rock HOF to be rock, but the definition of rock has changed so much it means something different to everyone. Each genre of music has been so influential on the other I guess I can see why the nominees are so diverse. If only the Oscars could be as diverse😀

          1. Genres of music were wrongfully segregated, just like people were.

To many people have forgotten, or don’t even know, where rock n’ roll originated… (NOT Elvis!)

The Oscars will never be diverse – that’s why I despise most visual media.
