Today is the 10th Anniversary of Record Store Day. My daughter and I didn’t get up too early to head down to our local record stores, but it was early for us on a Saturday. We left the house around 8am to get to Lunchbox Records which was to open at 9am. We knew it would be crowded, but we had NO IDEA!!!!
We arrived around 8:40am and the place was absolutely PACKED!! The line stretched around another building and turned and started going down the street. There had to be over 200 people in line. I am not a patient man, so this didn’t sit well with me. I decided to head over to Repo Records as they would normally open at 10am and I would see what their line looked like. Luckily it was just down the street about 5-8 minutes.
We arrived around 8:45-50 (I don’t remember exactly and it is really not key to the story). The line was really good. It had only about 40 people, so we figured we would wait it out. It turns out they had just opened and were only letting a few people in at a time so we timed it perfectly.
The line moved at a pretty good pace and we were probably in by 9:15. The place was crowded inside, but not bad at all. My main purpose for the trip was I wanted the Def Leppard E.P. which is a re-release of their original E.P. from 1979. I just knew they would be gone by the time we got in.
So, I finally decided on a few albums and checked out. With our purchase, Repo Records gave us a little goody bag and a poster to commemorate Record Store Day (which is the cover picture for the article). The goody bag had some interesting little items including…
A turntable cover with the record store logo…
A copy of Mojo magazine from September 2003 (why 2003 I have no idea as this was the 10th anniversary of Record Store Day and that would put us in 2007).
The most useful and crucial item goody in the bag was a Repo Record’s Fly Swatter!!! Yes, you read that correctly, a Repo Record’s Fly Swatter. The Red Edition!!!
That completely made the long drive and standing in line so worth it!!
Ok, not really. My purchases made that long drive and standing in line so worth it. Did I get the Def Leppard E.P….Damn straight!!! (Mike Ladano – I could only buy one of any album so I couldn’t pick you up a copy).
I also picked up a couple other nice little albums. Cheap Trick’s The Epic Archive Vol. 1 1975-1979.
And finally, David Bowie – Cracked Actor Live Los Angeles ’74.
There are a few more I would have liked, but money doesn’t grow on trees. However, I am pleased with these purchases and will do a review on each of them in due time. Anyway, I wanted to share my finds. If you participated today in Record Store Day, leave me a comment and let me know what you picked up. Until then, Have a wonderful and Happy Record Store Day!!
The crowds are the main reason I didn’t go this year. NICE FINDS. Did you happen to see Jimmy Page & The Black Crowes?

No. I didn’t get to see everything as I don’t like crowds and was ready to leave. I also wanted to look at The Cars live and I had heard of a Stevie Ray Vaughn live album but didn’t see them either.

I had to wait a lot longer! Sadly the Cheap Trick was gone but it’s out on CD next week so no biggie!
I’d did very the coveted Lep EP though and I also got the same Bowie live set as you. (Thanks for your heads up about it yesterday!)
So I’m pretty happy too. Could have bought more but I just like to get a couple of mementos and be involved. I’d just regret it if I went overboard.

Awesome. Glad you got the Bowie. I am looking forward to playing that one. I have the Lep EP on now. Since it is only 3 songs, should be done soon.

I would still love to get my hands on one of the original pressings, but not sure I want to pay whatever that cost might be.

Mine is a second pressing. Just a plain sleeve 7″. I think it was issued around the time of Hysteria. Mike has that version too I believe.

In doing research on this for my review, I see what you are talking about. I think there were 3 versions. I would take anyone of them just to have on file.

Sweet finds! In honour of RSD here, I… got the snow tires off my car. I don’t get to have RSD finds as there are no stores in my town that participate. But posts like this allow me to have the experience vicariously! Thanks!

Glad I could help! Snow tires off the car is a great thing IMO. I like Spring and a little warmer weather.

Didn’t they give you free beer? I got a free beer at Probe Records in Liverpool.

Love the fly swatter! Indeed, the ‘goodies bag’ is brilliant.

Nice haul. I didn’t head out at all, but I might have a look this week at what’s left. Maybe. The big one for me was the Iggy Pop set, but I thought it would be a bit pricey (and I learned it is).

Yes, that Iggy one was pricey. The Def Lep review will be up Wednesday. That Bowie one is great so far. One Lp down 2 more to go on that one (ok maybe 1 1/2).
