Turntables & Vinyl #8 – The CD Edition

CD Edition??  What the hell???  This is a series about my journey rediscovering Vinyl. Why would I discuss CDs??

Well, let me tell you why.  Before I started re-collecting vinyl, I use to have a pretty extensive CD collection.  After we had kids and the digital age, I burned all my CDs to digital and then started selling them off (made pretty good money on some).  When we moved from Georgia to North Carolina, I gave my neighbor the final box of CDs as I didn’t want to move them and I was going to have no where to store them (I regret that decision to this day).

Lo and behold, one of my neighbors inherited a collection of CDs he had no desire for keeping.  He had a bunch of scratched up, banged up CDs that probably didn’t even work and he was going to try and sell the rest.  I let him try and make a little money on the others (which he was able to sell about 100) and if there was any left, I told him I would be interested in whatever he had left.

A couple of months passes and I get a text.  He stated he still had some left and they were mine if I wanted them.  I immediately texted back that I was and how much.  For which he replied they were free.  FREE!!!  I love free.  Within 10 minutes I had huge batch of CDs to go through.

All the CDs are not in great condition, some are though.  I trashed a bunch that really were in horrible condition and/or were something I had no desire to spin.  As I go through them, the ones that skip or don’t play I will also trash, however, I plan on turning the CD Booklet into an Art Collage to hang in my home office. I think it will be pretty cool.  I will do a post on it when I finish.

I am sure it will take me a long time to get through these CDs for playability as I kept around 530 of the CDs…that is right 530 CDs for the grand price of $0.

So what was included in those 530 CDs…Here is a rundown.  I will just list the artists and how many CDs of that artist to save time.  And yes, I have already alphabetized them in the order I want them to be in.

That is it a very long nutshell.  There is no telling how long it will take to go through and see which ones play and which ones don’t, but I will eventually make it through it and maybe some new reviews to come out of it.  Nothing super rare or unusual, but still not bad for Free!!  Now after going through them, I have already had to throw away around 100 as they were cracked or completely unplayable.  However, I am gathering a nice collection of album covers as a result to make some sort of collage for my office.

And if you made it all the way down the list…congrats!!

  1. Nice. I’ve been able to pick out a few familiar spines from the photo.
I’ve yet to make a concrete decision what to do with my own cd collection. I still find them very useful for playing in the car etc and it seems to be a buyer’s market now – just as vinyl ‘reissues’ that offer nothing other than low-quality repro (a lot of Back to Black fall into that) are getting ott in their prices. Not sure that I have a lot that would make much on resell though, perhaps some rarer singles…
I’m sure one day they’ll be boxed up into the loft for my son to find in decades to come and wonder what the hell these weird, so easily damaged circle things were.

    1. There are some good ones in there, but nothing of value. I grabbed it as I didn’t want them to go to waste and maybe I could find something to write about. I just had to throw away 2 Zep CDs that skipped horribly, but the cd booklets will be turned into art of some kind.

  2. 530! Amazing, your neighbour is the coolest! I still collect CDs, and I always enjoy checking out other people’s CD collections. This is such a fantastic haul. Diverse, too. 🙂

    1. I am a little anal about the CDs, albums or whatever being in order of some kind. My wife went in to my office and the CDs were all over the place. She thought she was going to be helpful and put them in order for me, until she realized I had already done that immediately after I got them. She left me a little note that said…”Hi, My name is John and I have a problem that has no cure.”

      1. LOL!!!
You know what though, all the ‘collectors’ that I know, do exactly the same thing! Myself included! And we all have well meaning partners that are just ‘helping’ lol. It’s why my current collection now resides in My Lady Shed LOL!!
