My Sunday Song #49 is “Until I Wake Up” by Dishwalla. Well, it was Dishwalla originally where I discovered the song and really liked it. Years later, when JR Richards, the lead singer of Dishwalla, left the band he re-recorded the song and I discovered it again. This time it stuck with me and I can’t stop listening to it.
The album was originally off the Dishwalla album from 1998 called ‘And You Think You Know What Life Is About”. Most recently, JR Richards released it on his 2016 album ‘Stripped” which is of course acoustic songs of his work with Dishwalla. It also includes their big hit “Counting Blue Cars”. Well worth a listen.
The song is one of the saddest songs I think I have ever heard. I always felt the song was about being happier in your dream world when you are asleep than when you are awake. When you are awake there is nothing but disappointment. It is really depressing, but I can’t stop listening to it. JR’s haunting vocals and that acoustic guitar just pulls me in doesn’t let go.
The only thing I found on the song was at songfacts.com. Here is what they say about the song (I guess I was somewhat right in what I was thinking about the song).
This is about finally being happy and trying to keep everything calm. If you stir things up then disappointment and the realities of life come crashing in. It’s about living in a dream world where you don’t have to face life. We all search for that point inside of ourselves (the dream) where we are at peace.
Give it a listen and sorry if it brings you down a little. I think it is such a beautiful song and I don’t think I will ever tire of listening to it. Enjoy and Happy Sunday!
“Until I Wake Up”
Between the bed and sky
Download my dread
Disarm my mind, make it dry
Nothing in motion, and I’m satisfied
No disappointment ’til I wake up
Don’t want to wake up
Into clear space
Vivid vision, see her shape
At my bedside
Beam up my mind, please
Nothing in motion, I’m not satisfied
No disappointment ’til I wake up
Nothing in motion, and I’m not satisfied
No disappointment ’til I wake up
I don’t want to wake up
Nothing in motion, I’m not satisfied
No disappointment ’til I wake up
Nothing in motion, and I’m satisfied
No disappointment ’til I wake up
Don’t want to wake up, don’t want to wake up, no
Don’t want to wake up, don’t want to wake up, no
This song is gorgeous! I need to listen to this album.
