Welcome to February’s First Friday of new releases. There is a little Metal, Rock, Pop, Country and even Frank Zappa (he is his own category). Hopefully something will float your boat. There is only one I am really interested in and I might check out some others, but too early to say. My choice is highlighted in Blue as always.
- Justin Timberlake – Man of the Woods – (RCA Records): Is it no surprise that Justin is back with a new album as he is performing as the headline act for the Super Bowl Halftime Show on Sunday. The first single is a little different and took some getting used to, but I think I am digging it a little now. I am interested to see what he has to offer. I will admit I am a fan of his music so this one is a no brainer for me.
- W.A.S.P. – ReIdolized (The Soundtrack to the Crimson Idol) – (Napalm Records)
- Saxon – Thunderbolt – (Silver Lining Music)
- Wishbone Ash – Twin Barrels Burning: The American Remixes – (Cherry Red Records)
- Simple Minds – Walk Between Worlds – (BMG)
- Montgomery Gentry – Here’s to You – (Average Joes Entertainment)
- AWOLNATION – Here Comes the Runts – (Red Bull Records)
- Frank Zappa – The Roxy Performances (Live at the Roxy) – (Zappa Family Trust)
- John Oates – Arkansas – (PS Records)
Not a fan of AWOLNATION John? I like them a lot, though it always seems to take me a while to get into their songs. I usually dislike them at first, but after 2-3 listens, I end up loving them. I’m surprised to see Simple Minds has released an album, as I didn’t know they were still (or back) together. And as for JT, I’m still not sure about ‘Filthy’ though, like you, it’s starting to grow on me a bit.

I know nothing by AWOLNATION. I just know of them. I might give them a listen since there really isn’t too much to interest me this week. We will see about JT.

AWOLNATION’s lead singer Aaron Bruno has an interesting voice that borders on hoarse or shrill at times, and I can understand some not liking them. As boppinsblog suggested, check out their first album and big hit ‘Sail.’ My personal favorite of theirs is ‘Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)’ which ended up in my top 20 of 2015. They have a current hit ‘Passion’ that’s pretty good, though I find Bruno’s repeated verse in the beginning of the track of “Blow my mind” a little annoying.

Between you and Bop, I will look into them for sure. Thanks.

I saw Awolnation open for Prophets of Rage. They were decent. A little harder than I figured they would be.
Of course, their big hit Sail was what the crowd was waiting for. It’s a really good song. I suggest to start with the album that song is on called Megalithic Symphony.
As for the music today, I own no JT so I probably won’t start buying him.
Saxon, W.A.S.P and Zappa pique my interest.
I will be at record store today buying the new COC album on vinyl so I’ll look for anything else new.
Wishbone Ash have 2 re-releases today.
In terms of lesser knowns Don Broco, Genocide Pact, Long Distance Calling,
and Spite have new album drops.

I will start with what you suggest on AWOLNation, thanks. I am a little interested in the Saxon and W.A.S.P. if I have time to squeeze them in.
I wish I was at a record store today, but I have been way too much lately and need to cut back a little…very little.
Thanks for all the other new release adds. There are so many each week it is hard to keep track.

Look forward to the Saxon review Bop!
I don’t know if I can handle Blackie Lawless vocals anymore as those boys lost me almost 30 years ago…

If you liked Crimson Idol you may or may not like the “new” WASP.
It’s a re-imagined version. Basically Blackie re doing that album. I think he plays most if not all the instruments this time.
The dude in the store said that was his fave WASP album and he really liked the new one as well.

He’s selling ya on WASP….Moving Product out the doors
But who knows it may be decent

Not this dude. He has helped me find great stuff and helped steer me away from junk loys of times.
I often leave without buying but I go there because I like the selection, the prices, the music they play and the honesty.

I’ve listened to half of Man Of The Woods so far and I’m not sure what I think. I plan on listening to it a few times to get a better view of it.

I’ll be interested to watch timber lake at the Super Bowl this week, I imagine he will put on a good show!

We will be watching that as well. It should be a good show as he can be very entertaining.

One new release I just ordered — came out yesterday. The soundtrack to Star Trek Discovery by Jeff Russo!
Justin is the big release this week that will make a lot of noise, but there is no way I will buy W.A.S.P. Re-Idolized. I bought the original album enough times. And to be honest it’s not my favourite W.A.S.P. Might not even make the top 5.

I might stream the W.A.S.P., but won’t be buying that one either. I don’t know if I will be buying the JT one either. It is ok, but not really digging it that much right now.

JT I think I can rely on youtube and singles to get a feel for it.
I heard some clips from W.A.S.P. and as always, the big problem is that a singer’s voice changes a lot in 25 years.

As far as a singer’s voice changing so much in 25 years, how come Glenn Hughes sounds the same if not better??

Well shoot there goes my theory. Glenn Hughes is a BEAST!

No, your theory holds true. Glenn is the exception to the rule.

He’s incredible. And it could have gone the other way, easily. He turned his life around. I know he is very Christian, born again.

I didn’t know about the religious part, so good for him.

The only reason I know this is because it was big in the liner notes and thank-yous on his “From Now On” album. I assume it was one of the first he did clean.

Spoiler alert. Biff Byford’s voice sounds amazing.

That I knew because I heard him on some recent material. He too is a BEAST!

Save your cash. Buy the Saxon.

Saxon album is the only one that I’m particularly interested in, though I’m also intrigued by new Timberlake. I liked his last two and a foray into Americana is an unexpected detour.

Everyone is talking about the Saxon one. The JT is nothing like I expected. I don’t really hear the Americana. The jury is still out on how I feel about it.

Stapleton and fiddles, eh? The label’s marketing folks certainly got creative there with the Americana angle.
