Another Friday and another week of some great releases. There are some re-issues and so old bands back with new singers and some newer bands as well. Hopefully there is something for you. The two that really peak my interests are highlighted in Blue as usual. Leave me a comment on what interests you this week…if anything. Also, let me know if I am missing anything as that is usually the case. Happy Friday!!
- Stone Temple Pilots – Stone Temple Pilots – (Play Pen Music): The boys in STP are back and with a new lead singer, Jeff Gutt. The three songs I have heard are great and I am looking forward to the rest. Jeff sounds a little like the late, great Scott Weilan, but he also has his own sound and style. The old STP sound is there as well so hopefully the have their groove back and we will see some great things from them. Give it a try…if for no other reason than my brother-in-law was involved with recording the album. That makes it worth it right there alone!!
- Dorothy – 28 Days in the Valley – (Roc Nation Records): A new band on the scene is Dorothy. The band really delivers some great, heavy, old school blues rock & roll. The lead singer, Dorothy Martin, is a powerhouse and force to be reckoned with. Her searing vocals exploded on the scene with “Raise a Little Hell” and can’t wait to hear what she has to offer this time around.
- Little Ceaser – Eight – (Golden Robot Records)
- The Alarm – Declaration 1984-1985 – (Twenty First Century Recording)
- The Alarm – Eponymous 1981-1983 – (Twenty First Century Recording)
- Andrew Lloyd Webber – Unmasked: the Platinum Collection – (The Really Useful Group)
- Scotty McCreery – Seasons Change – (Triple Tigers)
- Yo La Tengo – There’s A Riot Going On – (Matador)
- The Crown – Cobra Speed Venom – (Metal Blade Records)
- Kim Wilde – Here Come the Aliens – (earMusic)
- The Decemberists – I’ll Be Your Girl – (Capitol Records)
- Meshell Ndegeocello – Ventriloquism – (Naive)
- Snoop Dogg – Bible of Love – (RCA)
- The Oak Ridge Boys – 17th Avenue Revival – (Lightning Rod Records)
Of these, Dorothy is on my list. STP just isn’t doing it for me… but I’m a firm believer that Weiland brought so much to that band. Great grooves that he locked into and he threw out some audacious melodies and phrasing. This guy just sounds like a generic alternative rock singer and I can’t tarnish my feelings about STP being one of my favourite bands.
Interesting connection for you (if you didn’t already know); Dorothy guitarist Nick Maybury was in The Wildabouts.
New Earthless album is out today, too… though I’m not expecting my record to arrive until next week.

I agree in that STP was Scott. I can’t fault the boys for wanting to continue with the name as it is easier than starting over (which they tried to do and not successfully under another band name). Jeff is good singer in his own right, but he isn’t and won’t be Scott and shouldn’t try. He does sound like Scott so when I listen to the album, I hope he tries to do his own thing, but not loose the sonics of STP. I have enjoyed the new songs I have heard, but it did take while to grow on me.
And I did not know what about Dorothy’s guitarist. I was listening to this one coming in to work. Some of it I really liked and some I didn’t. A mixed bag right now.

I think they needed an exceptional singer who would have brought something new. I don’t get that Jeff does that from the songs I’ve heard… the music is begging for something, and someone, special vocally. Not just from a Weiland fan point of view, but vocally he’s heading into obvious spaces. Good technically, but they needed a creative vocalist or, at least, someone with a different range. But hey, I’m not gonna be a big bowl of negativity here, I hope it all works out and sounds great… I just may not delve in for quite some time.
I’m in agreement with you about Dorothy after a listen today. Nothing particularly struck me as brilliant; a few I liked and some I didn’t.

I am trying to stay optimistic on the album especially since my brother in law was the sound guy on it. I definitely see what you are saying on it and do agree.

Little Casear I will check out as there last album the double live one was excellent. STP has been slowly growing on me with that new fella at the helm. I see Where J is coming from though…

I haven’t heard Little Caeser in forever so I am intrigued on that one a “little” bit.
And yes, I see where J. is coming as well. A lot of people feel that way. The first two songs grew on me, but it took a lot of listens. The CD will be at my house when I get home today from work. Looking forward to it.

I listened to a Youtube clip of Dorothy and get a wonderful hint of Ann Wilson(Heart). She has an amazing voice.
I will have to get this.
I also will get the STP. I have the new Earthless but have yet to play it.
Little Caesar, The Crown intrigue me.
Snoop Dogg is so damn cool that I may even get his album too.

Dorothy does have that vibe. I love their first album. I haven’t listened to this one enough yet, but a little mixed with me so far.
Can’t wait to get the STP in the mail today. I will try some of the others, but nothing else jumps out. I didn’t even know Snoop recorded albums. I thought he just guested in everyone’s albums. Lot of money in that.

Not a big week for me. Posted a few things at my site but I can’t really see me buying anything today.

I saw your post and you didn’t seem real excited. The only thing I bought was STP. Nothing else. I have a big purchase next week with the Kip Winger solo box set.

That looks like a great set! Not a big enough fan to invest but it looks cool. I’ve only got one Kip solo, it’s good but I don’t exactly listen it very often!

Understandable. His solo stuff is different than Winger.

That’s cool you’ve got a family connection to this STP recording!

Kim Wilde? Awesome. I bumped into her once In Tesco. Went all silly like a kid with a crush. Me not her. She was cool. But I think she was impressed

My thoughts too!! Cool that you met her. I would have probably done the same thing.

That Earthless one is awesome. Never heard of them until J. & Boppin mentioned them.
