My Sunday Song #91 is “Fly to the Angels” by Slaughter. The song was off their debut album ‘Stick It To Ya” and was there biggest selling single which charted #1 on the Mainstream Rock chart. It was the band’s only million selling song and was one of the best power ballads to come out of the 80’s Hair Metal scene. The funny thing is, the band isn’t an 80’s band. All of their albums were released in the 90’s starting with this one in 1990. To be fair, the 80’s Hair Metal scene hadn’t fully died off yet, that came a couple years later.
The song features Mark Slaughter’s unique vocals which were a little raw and scratchy which fit perfectly for the sound they were going for and helped them stand out on their own from other bands. The slow groove of the guitar heavy song hypnotically takes you through the story of the loss of someone that the person of the song truly loved. You can really feel the loneliness and the pain this person is feeling at his loss. It is a really touching song when you break it down and explore it.
I am sure everyone has lost someone at one point in time so that is probably why the song connected with so many people at the time. If you haven’t heard it in awhile, give it a listen.
Enjoy! And Happy Sunday!!
“Fly To The Angels”
Ohh they’re still on my mind
You had this smile
That could light up the world
Now when it rains it seems
The sun never shinesAnd I drive
Down this lonely, lonely road
Oooh I got this feelin’
Girl I gotta let you goCause now you’ve got to fly high (fly high)
Fly to the angels
Heaven awaits your heart
And flowers bloom in your name
Woahh ohh
You’ve got to fly (fly high),
Fly to the angels
All the stars in the night
Shine in your name
Though it hurts me way deep inside
When I turn and look and find
That you’re not there
I try to convince myself
But the pain,
The pain is still not gone
Still I drive
Down this lonely, lonely road
Oooh I got this feelin,
Girl I’ve got to let you go
But now you’ve got to fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
Heaven awaits your heart
And flowers bloom in your name
Whoa
You’ve got to fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
All the stars in the night
Shine in your name
Flyyy
And still I drive down
This lonely, lonely road
Oooh I got this feelin
Oh, I can’t let you go
But I know
That you’ve got to fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
Heaven awaits your heart
And flowers bloom in your name
Whoa oh ohh oh
You’ve got fly (fly high)
Fly to the angels
All the stars in the sky
Shine in your name,yeah
Ow
oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh
baby, oh
oooh ooooh oooh oooh oooh oooh
oohh yea
oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh oooh
I’m gonna miss you
miss you girl
Great call on these guys being a 90s band not a 80’s and but they still got lumped into it…
The debut was decent enough and Wild life was ok….after that I bought the third release which i don’t even remember and Slaughters vocals got to me by that point….
Still though they did alright as they caught the tail end of the genre and rode it out….

I agree with you on the two albums. I don’t remember much after Wild Life. But I really did enjoy those two albums and still do.

I reviewed a ways back when Slaughter/Ugly Kid Joe opened for Ozzy….
Slaughter was plugging the Wild Life Album….Ozzy was retiring or so he said and UKJ were everywhere with the EP and the ‘Everything I Hate About You”
Here’s my scribble about it..

I was obsessed with Stick It To Ya when it first came out. Fly To The Angels is as good an example of the genre as any other. Up All Night though. That’s a masterpiece

Yes, I agree with that assessment!

Definitely not what I was expecting this lot to sound like… though I guess this is ballad mode. Also not what I expected a 90’s band to sound like, so I can understand why they’d maybe be thought of as an 80’s band. Kinda reminded me of a less good Andy Taylor (I like Andy Taylor).

I like that. A less good Andy Taylor. I dug these guys for a couple albums and then they faded for me. I still really like their first two albums. And Andy Taylor is pretty good too!

I had a wee look at them online to see if I could hit up an album this week… see what non-ballad stuff sounds like.

Worst band I’ve ever seen live! (supporting Cinderella). So bad that when the drummer threw his sticks into the crowd, they threw them back.

Ok, now that is bad! I think I saw them open for Kiss on year. They weren’t terrible…not great…nut not terrible at that particular show.
