My Sunday Song – “Bellyache” by Billie Eilish

For My Sunday Song #117, I am going with a song my kids love that has grown on me immensely called “Bellyache” by Billie Eilish.  The song is from her 2017 album ‘Don’t Smile at Me’.  The song has done really well and has gone Gold in the States.  My kids are always listening to her, so naturally I end up hearing it quite often especially when we are all in the car together.

The song is very dark both lyrically and mood.  The singer has killed her lover and is a sure fire psychopath.  She has some regret that causes her stomach to hurt, but in the end she really doesn’t give a shit.  Should I worry that my kids like this song???

Just look at these disturbing lyrics…

“Sitting all alone
Mouth full of gum
In the driveway
My friends aren’t far
In the back of my car
Lay their bodies

…and the verse further in the song…

“Everything I do
The way I wear my noose
Like a necklace”

I’m all for dark songs so this thing is right up my alley.  The music for the song also plays with that theme coming off a little eerie and it at the same time has this airy feel to it like everything is okay.  It all just works.

The funny thing about this song with me and my kids.  I am singing the song along with them in the car and we get to the chorus and I start singing “maybe its in the colors / where I left my lover” which I thought was a great line for this song and that she was thinking that her feeling are shown in the colors around her that remind her of her lover.  However, my oldest starts laughing because I got the line totally wrong.  It is actually “Maybe it’s in the gutter / Where I left my lover”.  Now that is a little more gruesome…I still like my version better.

Here is the video, check it out and let me know what you think.  Have a Happy Sunday…if possible after hearing this.

“Bellyache”

Sitting all alone
Mouth full of gum
In the driveway
My friends aren’t far
In the back of my car
Lay their bodies

Where’s my mind
Where’s my mind

They’ll be here pretty soon
Looking through my room
For the money
I’m biting my nails
I’m too young to go to jail
It’s kinda funny

Where’s my mind
Where’s my mind
Where’s my mind
Where’s my mind

Maybe it’s in the gutter
Where I left my lover
What an expensive fate
My V is for Vendetta
Thought that I’d feel better
But now I got a bellyache

Everything I do
The way I wear my noose
Like a necklace
I wanna make ’em scared
Like I could be anywhere
Like I’m reckless

I lost my mind
I don’t mind
Where’s my mind
Where’s my mind

Maybe it’s in the gutter
Where I left my lover
What an expensive fate
My V is for Vendetta
Thought that I’d feel better
But now I got a bellyache

Maybe it’s in the gutter
Where I left my lover
What an expensive fate
My V is for Vendetta
Thought that I’d feel better
But now I got a bellyache
