It’s a pretty slow start to the year, nothing for me last week and only one for me this week (highlighted in Blue). However, that is normally the case for the first couple weeks of January. It will pick up soon, I promise. Hopefully there will be something for you in this list and if not, there will be something soon enough, I promise. The good news is it frees my up to keep chugging along on the Gene Simmon’s The Vault 15 part review and the David Coverdale Series…check them both out. How’s that for a shameless plug?
- Sons of Apollo – MMXX – (InsideOutMusic): I am so happy to see Sons of Apollo bringing us their second studio album, but third album overall. I thought this might be a one and done kind of thing, but thankfully nope. The band has one of my favorite singers, Jeff Scott Soto as well as some guys you might have heard of by the names of Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, Derek Sherinian and some no name guitarist that goes by Ron “Bumblefoot” Thal. Just a little band full of nobodies…huh, yeah right. It don’t get much better than this lineup!! A super group for dang sure. Check them out.
- G. Love & Special Sauce – The Juice – (Philadelphonic Records / Thirty Tigers)
- British Lion – The Burning – (Explorer1 Music)
- Magnum – The Serpent Rings – (Steamhammer)
- Little Big Town – Nightfall – (Craft Recordings)
- Dustin Lynch – Tullahoma – (Broken Bow Records)
- Halsey – Manic – (Capitol Records)
- Of Montreal – UR Fun – (Polyvinyl Records)
- John McLaughlin, Shankar Mahadevan & Zakir Hussain – Is That So? – (Abstract Logix)
- Bombay Bicycle Club – Everything Else Has Gone Wrong – (Mmm…Records)
- Anti-Flag – 20/20 Vision – (Spinefarm Records)
- …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead – X: The Godless Void and Other Stories – (Dine Alone Music)
I saw British Lion last year, mostly to see Steve Harris and I’m sure everyone there was in the same boat. Coney Hatch opened and they were good. British Lion was pretty awful. They toured a 6 year old album and didn’t even have any copies for sale.
Maybe their studio album is ok, but who knows. I wouldn’t hold my breath.
I am curious about Sons of Apollo & Magnum. Also there are new ones from Bonded, Mark Morton, Bliss Soundtrack- Steve Moore, Victorius.

Thanks for the adds, I missed a few. There was a also a surprise Eminem album that no one knew about just in case you were interested!! The British Lion one I might try. I can’t seem to get in to Sons of Apollo. I love Jeff Scott Soto so I want to like it, but not doing anything for me.

I’ll probably get that British Lion at some point but not now. Nothing here for me really this week.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop John!

You are welcome. I tried the Sons of Apollo as I love Soto, but can’t get in to it. Not my style of music.

I thought it was all about that bass. No treble.
I’m so confused.

British Lion for “the collection”. And then I go on a one hour rant about how Halsey sucks.

I’m all over anything John Mac. I might warm up to the Apollo. Liked what i heard. Especially the intro.

I hope you enjoy the Mac. I’m only so so on the Apollo one. Can’t get in to them for some reason. Still love Soto though.

John Mac is a no brainer for me. Something about Apollo caught my ear off the bat. Energy? Sound? I’ll delve a little deeper. Earlier stuff better?

I listened to one song of theirs.
Would countrified stoner be a pretty close description.

I’m interested in the Of Montreal album… might check out Trail of the Dead too. That said, I’m not too enthusiastic about them. New Mythic Sunship release out today… Changing Shapes… a live one from Roadburn (only 500 copies, so proper limited too).

500 copies! Now that is much better. I like that kind of limited.

My takeaway from this is that G Love and Special Sauce are still a going concern. Who knew?
