Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute – Tour Program

Here is something a little different for you from my site.  I received a bag of old guitar magazines from my mother-in-law.  The magazines were her son’s and she thought I might enjoy them.  The cool thing about the magazines is they were all featuring the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan.  Not bad at all.  But there was something out of place in the bag.  It was a Tour Program from the 1987 Tour of the Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute.

My brother-in-law is originally from Atlanta, like I am, so the tour book must be from either the October 14th or the 15th show as they played two shows on that tour in Atlanta at the Omni.  Actually, the 2nd leg played Atlanta on June 5th as well at Atlanta/Fulton County Stadium home of the Atlanta Braves and the Atlanta Falcons.  So, it could be that show.

The Tour was to pay tribute to the members of the band that were lost 10 years earlier in a tragic plane crash.  Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, backup singer Cassie Gaines (Steve’s older sister), assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary, and co-pilot William Gray were all killed in the plane crash.

The Tribute tour consisted of a number of surviving members reunited for the tour. Original members Gary Rossington, Billy Powell and Leon Wilkeson were joined by Ed King (he left the band in 1975), Artimus Pyle (drummer at the time of the plane crash), Randall Hall and Johnny Van Zant.  It was a great line-up and even had the Rossington Band opening the show.

And you need to know the set list…right?  Well, for the two Atlanta shows I can’t find the set list, but wikipedia had the typical set list as follows…which is pretty great.

  1. Nice score! That is so cool and an unexpected surprise. Concert programmes have a special appeal I think because of their size, design, and the inclusion of sometimes unique photos. I still have a few of my tour programmes from the late 80s, some signed by Metallica, Anthrax and Uriah Heep. Someone gave me a box of records, and snuck in between the discs were programmes for Rod Stewart and Eric Clapton – which I happily added to my little collection. The other thing I saved over the years is my concert ticket stubs. Great to look back at them and remember those exciting times!
    I bet the guitar mags are a wealth of good photos, articles, and ads for guitar gear, as well as ads for new albums at the time?

    1. That sounds like a good collection of programs especially if you have some signed ones. Pretty cool. I save my concert stubs and I did 3 post about them covering the 80’s, 90’s and 2000’s. It was a lot of fun thinking back on that time.
      I haven’t dived in to the guitar magazines…yet!

  3. I love me some Skynryd. The boy and i went to see them about a year or so ago. Fulfiled my bucket list dream of playing air guitar to ‘Free Bird.’ I read some detail about that plane crash. Some other band – The Who? – had rejected that plane as it was not in good condition. Cassie Gaines did not want to get on it. It was great to see them come back like the Phoenix from the ashes.

    And yes, to answer your unspoken question, I am ready, willing and able to help unclutter your domicile by taking all those magazines and tour guide off your hands. What are fellow bloggers for? 🙂

    1. I can’t give away that tour book, but the magazines might be a different story…first I have to go through them.
      The tour book belonged to my brother in law and he was in a Lynyrd Tribute Band for sometime out in California. I think he knew Ed King from the band as well.

        I imagine bands like Kiss and the likes are the only folks keeping them going. No doubt loads of cash made on them.

      2. Good find! & thanks for sharing it 🙂 Didn’t realise they don’t do them these days? [or at all presently, pesky C-19] Most bands I saw didn’t have them but I did get mid-80s programs for Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Cult, Spear of Destiny, The Mission; loved them & kept them immaculate, like my vinyl! Yet at some point when I moved house I just got rid – How I wish I had them now..
