For this part of the David Coverdale series, we are throwing in the review of the song David did from the movie ‘Days of Thunder’ starring Tom Cruise. The song came out in 1990. Whitesnake hadn’t called it quits just yet, still a year away for that, but David was exploring solo projects such as this. And honestly, how could he turn down the opportunity to have a song on a Tom Cruise movie back in a time when Tom could do no wrong.
As you can see, the song was produced by Trevor Horn, but the song was actually written by Hans Zimmer who did the music, but what I find is that the lyrics were actually written by Billy Idol…yes, that Billy Idol. I am sure David contributed a little, but mostly he sang. I now have a connection between the last music series I did with Billy Idol and this one with David Coverdale..so cool.
This single was only released as a single in Europe which is exactly where I found it. This is another Single I picked up on my Paris trip. I picked up a bunch of singles at that time and another one will be discussing in a couple weeks for the David Coverdale series as well.
A SIDE:
The song is wonderful power rock ballad full of synthesizers and very melodic. David sings softly and his voice sounds quite lovely. Like the typical ballad, it builds and then towards the end, it breaks open and picks up tempo as does David. He starts to scream the vocals (in a melodic way) and pours the emotion on to fit the musical stylings. With Whitesnake being as big as they were, I am surprised this wasn’t released in the U.S. as a single. Instead, we got the Guns ‘n’ Roses version of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” which was no slouch.
B SIDE:
The B-Side has a cover of the Spencer Davis Group classic, “Gimme Some Lovin'” performed by Terry Reid. For me this is odd as the movie actually played the Spencer Davis Group’s version. Must have been a licensing issue. The Terry Reid version is very 80’s synth pop style and honestly, kind of sucks. I would rather hear the original…I guess there is no point in doing this song for my The Original vs. The Cover series as you know how I feel about this song.
The second song on the B-Side is a song called “Car Building” by Hans Zimmer. It was from the score to the album and is another synth and drum song building the tempo I am assuming as they are building a car. It is short at just over 2 1/2 minutes and is okay. A little out of place here, but so be it.
Overall, I only wanted this for the David Coverdale song and it is worth it for that part alone. Which means the B-Side won’t ever get played again…most likely. Another great find for my collection and glad to have it.

This song is great. I purchased the Days Of Thunder soundtrack just to have it. Lol.
Like you I was surprised when I saw the writers as I thought DC wrote it. Billy Idol surprised me on that one.
And goddamn, that Paris shop is unearthing some gems.

Part of the reason for the inclusion of Terry Reid might be that he was working on his solo album called The Driver with Trevor Horn around that time, and he recorded his own version of this Hans Zimmer track, co-written by himself, as the title track. His version of Gimme Some Lovin’ also appears on that album. I don’t know which of the songs was written first, but I was familiar with the Terry Reid track before I saw the film.

I love this song. I remember when it came out as I had the CD at one time. I didn’t know until I bought this that Billy Idol wrote it so that is why i did the Billy post on Monday to have twofer from the Idol.

This is a single I am still needing. Scott wouldn’t sell me his. LOL. I have the soundtrack CD. Funny enough they played this song at my graduation. I’ve been writing a lot about that year (1991) but I forgot that detail until now. I have two 1991 stories locked and loaded but now I think I need to write one more!
Such a great song. I couldn’t believe it the night I heard it at graduation. I had nothing to do with it being selected and I don’t know who did. I think whoever chose it must not have known it was the Whitesnake guy!

1991 was a good year, looking forward to those posts. I like nostalgia. And I can’t believe anyone picked that song as it was that well known, I didn’t think it was anyway.
