Here is another Bonus Edition episode of the David Coverdale Series.  The last special find I made while in Paris of April 2019.  This 12″ Picture Disc of the Single for “Take Me For A Little While” from the album 1993 album ‘Coverdale-Page’.  I found this at a cool store called Rock & Roll Voltage and it was a cool little shop.  Ask him about Bootlegs as he has a ton…I bought 7 Kiss Bootlegs that day as well.

The picture on the A-Side is of David and Jimmy and is the cover photo for the article.  The B-Side is a cool picture of the ocean with a storm brewing and of course the Merge Sign.

What was really cool about this Disc was the poster was still with it and in pretty awesome condition.  And it was a double-sided poster at that. The main picture is a full length of the boys…

And the flip side you get a closer-up view of the two…

They are magnificent.  At the bottom of the flip side there are a couple of pictures that work as the inner sleeve for the package.  One with the track listing and another one of the boys…

But honestly, you are here for the music, am I right?  Yeah, I am.

SIDE A:

Side A has two tracks, both of which are the song “Take Me For A Little While”.  The first one is the LP version and as I said last week, the song is full of acoustic guitars and keyboards and what even sounds like a string section. Jimmy even plays bass on it as well.  It starts off slow, builds a little, goes back to slow and fast again like every power ballad from back in the day.  David loves his ballads and he did a great job with this one as it isn’t too contrived and actually sounds quite beautiful capped off with a sweet sounding guitar solo from Page to put the icing on the cake.

The second version of the song is all acoustic.  Just David and Jimmy.  It builds and slows back and forth, but doesn’t go full blown power ballad as it really is just Jimmy and an acoustic and David’s vocals. No drums, keys or anything else.  It is quite spectacular.

SIDE B:

Side B kicks off with the album opening track “Shake My Tree”.  However, this is the “The Guitar Crunch Mix” and not the album version.  The original version opens with a killer Zeppelin style riff (no surprise at is Page) and Coverdale coming in with a confidence and swagger that fit with the riff.  The song has a slow build and comes crashing in with some stellar drum sound from Denny Carmassi (Montrose, Gamma). The riff was written by Page back in his Zeppelin days while working on the album ‘In Through the Out Door’.  He whipped it back out for this project and so glad he did as it was killer.  Throw John Harris’ harmonica playing on top of that guitar and you have magic.  How does this version differ from the original?  Honestly, I don’t feel it is much different.  Sounds pretty similar. Guitars might be brought to the front a little in the mix, but outside of that, it isn’t that noticeable to me.

The final song is “Easy Does It” and is the album mix. Nothing new here.  It has a nice groove thanks to Ricky Phillips on bass.  Carmassi’s percussion work has some nice subtleties before the song kicks in and his drumming powers the song.  Page throws in some nice riffs but nothing overpowering.  This song is more for Coverdale to sing his blues style.  The song titles fits the feel of the song.

And that is it.  It is a cool set to have in the collection.  I hope I stumble across more like this some day as it is always a blast to explore. Until next time…
