My Sunday Song – “We Don’t Run” By Bon Jovi

For My Sunday Song #192, we are going to discuss the very last great Bon Jovi song to ever be written. The song is “We Don’t Run” and it is lead single from their 2015 album ‘Burning Bridges’. The album is a big F U to the band’s record label Mercury.  This was a total contract fulfillment album as the band lumped together some unfinished songs and wrote this particular one for the album.  It isn’t a terrible album, but far from their best.

The song is another in a long line of rock anthems that are meant to be uplifting and empowering which all started with song “It’s My Life” back in 2000.  The song does make you feel inspired as it is telling you to stand up for you believe in and do what you need to do to make it happen.  The song was written with John Shanks who also produced the album with Jon Bon and it also is where the album title comes.  Interesting note, this is the first album not to feature Richie Sambora…and with the exception of this song, it shows.

Musically the song is heavy on the bass and the drum which drives the beat home and is the force behind the song thanks to Hugh McDonald on bass and Tico Torres on drums. The guitar solo on this song is amazing and is handled by John Shanks who earned his chops playing with Melissa Etheridge.  Jon sings the lines in the same force as the drum beat, very powerful and perfect timing on the delivery.  The combo of the drum beat and his vocals, you get worked up and ready to fight for what you want.  On an album that was lacking a lot, this left you feeling good.

    1. He can still change it. I think he probably should, because you’re right, 2020 is going to have a new meaning when we’re on the other side of this. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has another album out in short order afterwards, about this time period.

      1. I don’t like the title 2020 anyway as it always dates a song or album when you put the year in it (unless he is going for the whole hindsight 20/20). But he is running out of time if he is. The product needs to be ready any day now for his May 15th release.

          1. Yep. When Asia did “Heat of the Moment” and through in the year in the lyrics, killed it at ever being a timeless song. I think it was that song. Rule #1 in songwriting, never put in a year and rule #2 never put in anything that is trending like technology as it dates it. Can’t be a song that will truly live on and feel like it would work in any year it is played.

  3. Listened to your link of the song. It’s not a bad track actually. But I checked out on these guys once AJS got the boot. Ok, I bought These Days than checked out.

    Considering no one really cares about new music from this guy anymore it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

    Still wouldn’t buy it though. lol

              1. I tend to go for the for sure stuff now. Like all this Leppard live stuff is a must buy etc.
                Anything else I will wait for my blogs pal to post on it before I make a decision.

          1. Mine must have been more than 10 years now. It was around Lost Highway or just before. So Sambora stuck around for years afterwards… but I just felt something was off and lost interest. There was lots of additional musicians which is probably what really bugged me. When you’ve got those guys in a band you don’t need anyone else and Sambora seemed a bit sidelined to me.

            1. I hate when they added more people. What did it for me was that I have no memory of that show at all. I couldn’t tell you one thing about how they played or anything. That was when I knew there was no going back.

  7. I’ve not been able to enjoy much they’ve done for a while, the John Shanks era isn’t that strong on success – I don’t like the seemingly constant use of ‘ah ah aaahh’ vocal layers… this one’s got some good points but Burning Bridges had a couple of good tunes

    1. I couldn’t agree more with the Shanks era. This was the first song in awhile I liked. And there are a few good ones on this album overall. For what was supposed to be a throwaway album, I liked it more than the previous 2-3 albums.

      1. Exactly – when Jon realises he’s not gonna have another It’s My Life and stops trying to actively write a ‘hit’ the result will be a great album I’m sure. Until then it always sounds like a desperate attempt to sound ‘fresh’… which is a real shame as the band’s back catalogue has some great stuff in it. Oh, and the return of Richie would help too
