Needtobreathe – “Who Am I”

Sometimes when you hear a song, it connects with you, it moves you, it touches you in a way that few songs can do. Well, this is one of those songs. The first time I heard it immediately caught my attention. There was something special about it, I could tell. I listened to it again, I mean I really listened to it. I took in the words and absorbed them in to my mind and then in to my heart. Yes, this song IS Special!!

Sometimes an artist can write a song that you feel is written especially for you or for something going on in your life. Well, this is one of those songs. If you know anyone that is suffering from depression, then this is a song that you need to hear. Depression can make a person feel worthless, can make a person feel like there is no hope, can make a person push their loved ones away. Depression is cruel and it is so hard to watch someone go through it and it leaves you wishing there is something you can do.

“Who Am I” is a song that can be interpreted in a couple ways. The first way is more religious. It is God telling us that no matter how unworthy we feel, he will always be there. No matter what we do or say, no matter how bad it is, God will love us unconditionally. All we need to do is accept him in to our hearts

However, I come about from a different vantage point. I see it as someone suffering from depression and not understanding why their partner can still love them and be with them. They feel so unworthy of their love and can’t grasp why they won’t runaway. No matter how much they push their loved ones away, they stand by them regardless and love them. The song is them questioning “Who They Are” and how are they worthy of your love. Look at the lyrics…

Last night, confidence was shaken
My wounds and my past was saying
No one should ever love me like You do

There is one line that I found to be so powerful and when that person notices you loving them…

I push You away, still You won’t let go
You grow Your roses on my barren soul

If you know someone that suffers from Depression then this song can strike close to the heart for you as it did me. Not too many song have brought me to tears, but this is one of them. So, when someone you love is going through a bout of depression and you feel there is nothing you can do, well you can help. You only need to be there for them. Help them do the things they can’t at that time. You only need to love them. That little bit, although at times can be so hard, can help them push through it.

What I love about some songs is that they are open to interpretation. You take from the song what you want to take it from it. What it means to you might mean something totally different. If you want to know what the song really is about, Bear Rinehart stated the following in an interview I read on the TheChristianBeat.org…

“Probably the biggest and most constant struggle I have in my life is being able to accept love. At some place in my core, it’s hard for me to believe that I’m ever worthy of it, or somehow deserve it,” shared vocalist Bear Rinehart. “‘Who Am I’ is a song about the fight to accept, embrace, and trust that the greatest love requires nothing in return.”

I know this was a little different of a post as it was a little more personal for me, so thank you for making it through it. This song has helped me understand what someone might be going through as they battle depression. I wanted to share this song with you in hopes it can help in some way. Please give the song a listen and then read the lyrics, I mean really read the lyrics. Take it in. The song is off their 2020 album, ‘Out of Body’ and wroth checking out if you get the chance.

Sometimes a song comes in to your life at the right time for the right reasons. Well, this is one of those songs.

“Who Am I”

Woo-oo-oo
Woo-oo-oo

White lies and desperation
Hard times and conversations
No one should ever love me like You do

Sometimes my bad decisions
Define my false suspicions
No one should ever love me like You do

Oh, while I’m on this road You take my hand
Somehow You really love who I really am
I push You away, still You won’t let go
You grow Your roses on my barren soul

Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I?

Last night, confidence was shaken
My wounds and my past was saying
No one should ever love me like You do

Oh, while I’m on this road You take my hand
Somehow You really love who I really am
I push You away, still You won’t let go
You grow Your roses on my barren soul

Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I?

The way I push you through it what You had to see
I’m a train wreck, I’m a mess, You see the best and the worst in me
Still I can’t imagine that I’ve earned Your trust
I don’t understand where Your love comes from

Who am I, who am I, who am I
Ayy, to be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I?

Ayy, to be loved by you?
Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I
To be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I?
Yeah, to be loved by You?
Who am I, who am I, who am I?
To be loved by You?

  1. It’s one thing to truly listen to their lyrics and their songs, but to also watch them perform and see Bear really lay into some of those lyrics (like he does in this song) tends to give me chills. Well done, and keep propping “the best band no one has ever heard of.”

  2. Living with a therapist (as I do), and seeing folks I know battle depression (and damaged sense of self worth), this post is a powerful public service announcement. Thanks for sharing this (I really read the lyrics)!
