Kiss – Konfidential (1993) – VHS Review (The Kiss Review Series)

After Kiss released ‘Alive III’ you figured it would be time to do another album, but that wasn’t the case. The band instead decided to release another video on VHS. On August 16, 1993, the band released the video ‘Kiss Konfidential’. It sold over 50,000 units and in VHS tapes, that is considered Gold…who knew. The video is basically the live concert for ‘Alive III’ as there are 12 live performances that are from that album. So if you wanted a video concert of ‘Alive III’ this was as close as you were going to get.

Now that wasn’t all you were getting. The video also contained 4 live performances from the Kiss Archives which gave us “100,000 Years” from Detroit in 1976; “Nothing to Lose” from San Francisco in 1975; “Hotter Than Hell” again from Detroit in 1976 and lastly, “Let Me Go Rock ‘N’ Roll” from Japan in 1977. Now the songs were not played one right after the other because interspersed between the songs were backstage footage from the Revenge Tour as well as Exclusive interviews with the band. You were given about an hour and half of total Kiss.

First up, let’s talk the interviews. The interviews aren’t always overly informative, but what you got was a band that was relaxed and seem to enjoy being the in the same room with each other. One good thing about the interviews is that the paid guns, Bruce Kulick and Eric Singer, actually had a big part in the interviews and contributed a lot which was nice to see this being more of band show than a Gene & Paul show. If you like to hear them talk about women & sex and if you enjoy seeing a bunch of half naked women and strippers walking around in the backstage area, then you will enjoy this as well.

Now the Archived vintage live footage was pretty cool as we got to see Kiss in make-up performing on stage which was still not that common around this time (now it is no big deal). The best part was seeing Gene in his early 70’s attire doing the whole blood spitting routine which is always the best. Otherwise, the performances are nothing special as now we have the Kissology DVDs with all the vintage live footage to go through.

I guess we can talk about the live Revenge concert footage that was used from the same three shows that were recorded for the ‘Alive III’ album. This was 1992 era so the stage set up had the bigger than life Statue of Liberty whose face explodes off at around the end of the show revealing a skull. The performances were not straight concert shots, they were edited and effects put in like slo-mos and stuff for dramatic effect. One big surprise that you don’t get from the album is that during the song “Take It Off”, a bunch of strippers are up on stage with the band putting on quite a show and showing lots of Boobies which seems to be a common theme for Kiss videos back then. The girls were so good in fact, you start to forget the band is even there.

The live songs are great, but like I said earlier it is not a straight concert performance as the interviews and backstage antics are interspersed which actually detracts from the live performances as you can’t just dive in and absorb the whole show. There really isn’t much else to discuss on the video. If this was a straight concert video and you had the bonuses tacked on at the end for the interviews and vintage footage was a little more than 4 songs this might have been great, but as it is, it is fairly entertaining at best. I actually think I will stick with the album in this case. I will give the video a 3.0 out of 5.0 Boobs…I mean Stars.

      1. Tommy and Eric are cool dudes. I still wish they gave them their own makeup. I know how important it was for the Kiss brand to keep the Catman and Spaceman, but it would’ve been nice and Tommy and Eric had their own identities in the band rather than be the replacements for their former counterparts.

        1. It is all a set up to keep the band going after Gene and Paul step down. The band has now shown that it doesn’t matter who is in the make-up, people will come. I don’t know how true that will be after they leave, but we will see what happens in a few years.

  3. I bought this back then as well. Pretty good for the time as they were still putting out product amidst the Grunge Tsunami which kept the KISS brand afloat.
    Cool writeup John and a flashback as well. lol

  5. John…not knowing a whole bunch about their video output over the years…If I wanted something that covered the seventies pretty well…documentary wise and music which one would be a good starting point? Kissology?

    In the 80s I had a friend who had all of these vhs bootlegs of them from the seventies with different quality…that was the only way you could see them back then.
