Friday New Releases – February 12, 2021

The last couple of weeks for me haven’t been big on releases. This week changes all that. There are so many I want to check out that it might take a whole week to get through them all. My choices are highlighted in Blue. Now before we go on, lets take a look at something in the list below. Frontiers Records has not 1 or 2 or even 5, they have at least 6 albums coming out this week (could be more, I only put in 6). That is one label releasing that many albums on one day. Kind of shocking. If I was an artist on that label, I would ask how the label can market that many releases at one time. Seems unfair to the releases. And a lot of the label’s albums are similar type of music. There is no way, the public can buy them all, especially in today’s environment. I am not sure I understand their strategy. Enough about that. What albums are you most eager to hear? Let me know what you want and what I may have missed. Thanks and have a great weekend.

  • A1ZVtvdzNFL._SX522_  The Pretty Reckless – Death by Rock And Roll – (Fearless Records): This hard rock band, fronted by Taylor Momsen, is back with another kick ass release. At least I hope it will be kick ass. Taylor has a great rock voice and I have been a fan of her vocals and band since they came out years ago. Can’t wait to dive in to this one.
  • 71R8bsymJzL._SX522_  Durbin – The Beast Awakens – (Frontiers Records): James Durbin has returned after a short stint with Quiet Riot. Glad to see him on his own again. He has brought some heavy hitting friends along and this one is supposed to be balls to the wall heavy and should be right up his alley. Who’da think this boy from American Idol would still be hanging around this long. Good on him.
  • 81sHOsok1UL._SS500_  Joel Hoekstra’s 13 – Running Games – (Frontiers Records): The former Night Ranger and current Whitesnake guitarist is back with his second album under the Joel Hoekstra 13 name and I am hoping for more great guitar playing and some great music with Russel Allen on vocals, Tony Frankin on bass and Carmine Appice on drums. Not bad, not bad at all.
  • 81vGmzpn1sL._SS500_  Jon Foreman – Departures – (Jon Foreman): The Switchfoot frontman is out on his own with another new album. I am not sure what to expect, but I am sure it won’t be like Switchfoot as what would be the point. Normally his music has a little more folky, beachy vibe and I would be happy with that, this one

And then some other ones that might be worth checking out...

  • 71nQU-zaRiL._SS500_  Black Sabbath – Vol. 4 (2021 Remaster Set) – (Warner Records): A Super Deluxe Edition…has there not been one before…oh well, I’ll take it since I didn’t get the last one. Always take more extras from Sabbath.
  • 61O0RlWbkzL._SX522_  Dio – Holy Diver Live – (Niji Entertainment / BMG Rights): We don’t get one, but we get 2 live album reissues from Dio…
  • 71UzHp76UnL._SX522_  Dio – Evil or Divine: Live in New York City – (Niji Entertainment / BMG Rights): And here is the 2nd one…
  • 81WYlpErvhL._SX522_  Tommy Bolin – Shake the Devil: The Lost Sessions – (Cleopatra): An album of lost tracks that have suddenly been found after how many years? Who cares, I will give it a listen. (Sorry no video.

And all the rest…

  • 71aqVJJvA9L._SX522_  Robin Thicke – On Earth, and in Heaven – (Lucky Music / Empire)
  • 31gq-hz9o9L  3.2 – Third Impression – (Frontiers Records)
  • 71VOvzwKq6L._SX522_  Inglorious – We Will Ride – (Frontiers Records): I had this video playing and now I want to hear the whole thing. This might be better than I originally was thinking.
  • 81R7TiisVxL._SX522_  Kreek – Kreek – (Frontiers Records)
  • 71oN7G0VUsL._SX522_  Arc of Life – Arc of Life – (Frontiers Records)
  • 817Ue8+vVSL._SX522_  Sirenia – Riddles, Ruins & Revelations – (Napalm Records)
  • 81cNnjQ4ywL._SS500_  Moat – Poison Stream – (School Kid Records)
  • 81nLnBcmHxL._SS500_  Pale Waves – Who Am I? – (Dirty Hit)
  • 714vDID4r-L._SS500_  The Band – Stage Fright (Deluxe Remix 2020)
  • 81BPGpHvJJL._SS500_  Florida Georgia Line – Life Rolls On – (BMLG Records)
  • 61GOPJrAZuL._SS500_   Pentatonix – The Luck Ones – (RCA / Sony)
  • 71ajfXYhF+L._SX522_  Karen Matheson – Still Time – (Compass Records)
  • 61H6MiO3vkL._SS500_  Sia – Music: Songs from and inspired by the Motion Picture – (Atlantic / WEA)
  • A16sMVPq32L._SS500_  Love and Death – Perfectly Preserved – (Blind Tiger Entertainment): Here is another one that I heard the video and now I want to check this one out as well. It is just heavy enough for me.
  • 81HEy7U9DaL._SX522_  R+R=Now – R+R=Now Live – (Blue Note)
  • 616StaNBEaL._SX522_  Django Django – Glowing in the Dark – (Because Music)

  1. Is that 3.2 album supposed to look like a pack of 5 gum?

Have we also used up so many band names that groups now have to use decimals to come up with something unique? Who will be the first to name their band after the 15th-24th digits of pi?

  2. Some great live stuff here Snowman. Thanks to Apple Music I will check out more than I would have so in saying that I will check out the two Dio live ones, The Band and the Hoekstra’s records. A good weekend of rock coming up.

  3. Two live Dio albums? Hell yeah! \m/ \m/ Also, I’m curious about the Band re-release of Stage Fright. I’ll have to look into that one. And the Sabbath… well yeah, always get the extras, but I’m a bit disappointed. I have all those other 2CD re-releases of the albums, and Vol. 4 was never part of that. Now here it comes and it’s in a fancy Super-deluxe (read: Super-expensive) edition and there is no 2CD version to match the rest of the set. I never bought the huge Paranoid set, and I’m unlikely to afford this one either, so maybe they’ll make a lesser 2CD set for the rest of us later?

  4. Aside from the deluxe edition of my 2nd favourite Sabbath album, I’m intrigued by the Tommy Bolin release. Certainly worth some investigation… and I might check out Django Django, too.

  5. I previously didn’t order anything from Amazon for weeks until I got a chance to listen to James’ new record first. If I like it, then I’ll buy it for sure (to make up for getting rid of his first album because I was stupid).

      1. I purposely waited until after I heard the album before buying more stuff on Amazon. But in the end, I didn’t buy Durbin’s album. Same as you, I need more listens to determine if I really like it. I like some of the songs and the direction he’s taking, but there were times when his screams were too much for me (and this is coming from someone who voted for him every week on Idol)!

  6. Technically this isn’t a Friday release, but Danny Elfman put out a new single on the eleventh. I’ve heard he’s going to do one on the eleventh day of every month for the foreseeable future. Something to keep your eye on for sure. He’s put out three new rock songs in the last few months for the first time in a long time, and he’s stranger (and angrier) than ever. This is the new one.

      1. It’s a most welcome comeback.

Unrelated. Is that thumbnail of Taylor Momsen real? It doesn’t look like it’s humanly possible for someone to have a neck that long. Not trying to be a dick, I just don’t know if it’s supposed to be some artsy heightened reality kind of thing. If not, then damn. She’s got to have great vibrato then.

      1. It’s extra impressive given that he’s 67 and it sounds like nothing he’s ever done before. Absolutely no resting on his laurels here. He’s doing it for the passion, not the cash. It sounds remarkably modern and vital for someone at an age where most people are winding down.
