A Year in Music! – What did 2 Loud 2 Old Music Listen to in 2021?

For 2021, I did something a little different here at 2 Loud 2 Old Music. I tracked every single album I listened to kind of like Spotify, but more manual and not as technical. Every time I listened to an album or E.P., I wrote it down. And I will say that this will be the last and only time I ever do this as it was a pain in the ass. I will say, this was not a normal year. I worked from home all year which gave me access to all my music, vinyl, cds and streaming. I didn’t include individual songs or shuffling which I like to do. These were straight album listens from beginning to end in the order the album was meant to be heard.

A couple more points to note. When I do a review of an album, I try to listen to it 5 to 6 times before reviewing so there are a lot of repeat listens to an album. And what did I track? I tracked the following:

  • Artist
  • Album Name
  • Year of Release
  • Month
  • Day
  • Day of the Week
  • Format

With all that data, I am able to give you lots of useless information that I thought would be fun. So let’s get started. How many albums did 2 Loud 2 Old Listen to in 2021? Easy…1,374!! If I was working in the office, the number probably would’ve been no where even close to that number. Now let’s get in to the juicy details. Out of the 1,374 albums, there were 609 unique albums I heard during the year.

What were the Top 20 Bands I listened to during the year and how many albums?

Note, I worked on a number of Review Series during the year and made some Album Rankings and as a result, those are going to be high on my list. I don’t think there are really any surprises on this list, especially the Top 5 as they were all Review Series. There were 290 different artist and bands I listened to throughout the year.

What were the Top Formats?

Was is Vinyl, CD, Streaming or Streaming in my Car? If this was a normal year where I was driving in to work everyday, I bet Streaming in my Car would be #1, however, this was not a normal year. So you probably thing Vinyl as I am amassing a large collection, but that is wrong as well. It was actually CDs and that is only because the Judas Priest and Queen Series was all CDs. Plus, all my Will Hoge and Jeff Scott Soto albums are in CD format as well. Here is a wonderful chart for you (this should make Geoff happy)…

How many albums did I listen to per month?

This is very consistent from month to month with December being the lowest mainly due to going in to the office a few days plus vacation which actually limits my listening enjoyment. The winner is a tie between March and July.

What day of the week did I listen to the most music?

I will let you know that weekends are not it. On the weekends I tend to write my reviews and then it is family and chore stuff so fewer opportunities to listening. During the week, when I am not on calls, I have music going all day long. The Winner ever so slightly is Monday!!

What about Years? What year got the most listens?

Before I tell you that, I listened to music over a 60 year span starting with 1962 all the way to 2021. Out of that time span, only 2 years had no listens and that was 1963 and 1968. Every other year had a listen. The winning year is 2021 as on Fridays, I would listen to so many new releases that it easily pushed it in to the lead. 348 albums were listened to from 2021. The next closest was 1977 with 49.

What Decade had the most listens?

No surprise with all my new release listens, 2020 is the winning decade with 384. The next closest is probably no surprise either with the 1980’s at 262 listens.

There are anywhere from 28 to 31 days in each and every month. What Day of the month had the most listens is interesting because it is pretty consistent from day to day with the exception of the 31st. That is the lowest as not every month has 31 days. The most listens fell on 12th of every month with 59…but check out that most days were 40’s and 50’s.

Now as far as minutes, I have no real idea. We can guesstimate that if each album was 40 minutes in length and with 1,374 albums heard, I spent 54,960 minutes listening to music. Which is 916 hours or 38.167 days. That is a lot of time. But since there were times I listened to random shuffling and a lot of new singles, there is no telling how many days I really listened to music.

All I know is that was a pain to track and I won’t be doing that again…EVER!!! I hope you enjoyed this bit of entirely useless information!! Thanks for supporting us all year and can’t wait to see you in 2022!!!

  3. Holy Cow Dude. Now this is a list filled with every single stat known to mankind. Except for 2021 I like that you had a ton of spins from 1977 and 1990! That kind of thing is cool to see..

  4. I love useless data, especially that gathered by pain in the ass methods! I love graphs and charts too. This is an epic post. There are 525,600 minutes in a year, so your 54,960 minutes of listening was 9.7% of your entire year!

  10. Well, firstly, good job. Secondly, you have way too much fucking time on your hands. Looking at your list, the thing we mostly have in common is that we are music lovers. Your taste leans a lot more towards the hair bands than mine ever did or will FWIW. Kiss, Priest, Scorpions, Leppard, etc. are of no particular interest to me. Cheap Trick, Queen, Aerosmith – now yer talkin’. I like STP but not to that level. A fair number of these bands I never heard of. Katy Perry comes out of nowhere on this list. She has a great voice (and is not at all bad to look at, if quite an odd persona.) If everything she did had been like ‘I Kissed a Girl,’ I’d enjoy listening to her more.

    1. Thanks. Yeah, are taste are mostly different but some similar likes but we do both love music. The Katy Perry was from doing an album ranking when I was missing my daughter who went off to college for the first time. She used to love Katy.

  11. there’s just a detail, kiss, scorpions, judas priest and def leppard are not hair bands while steelheart and danger danger are hair bands, it’s hard to make the difference, judas priest do heavy metal music, kiss is a hard rock band, scorpions is a hard rock band too and def leppard is more pop metal or melodic hard rock.

    Fabulous post, and yes, this makes me exceptionally happy.
    I can imagine this was a pain to keep track of but hopefully you found the return on time/energy investment was worth it as this breakdown is fascinating.
    And I’m pleased that although Mondays don’t have the best reputation, they’re at least notable for being an optimal music listening day!

  14. Wow! Your statistics were impressive! Way more accurate perspective than Spotify would give you! I guess working at home really had an effect on your music listening. Your album counts from 2019, 2020, and 2021 showed significant differences. What were your top genres, by the way? I think I know, but I’m just curious.
