For this edition of the Jeff Scott Soto Series, we are going to look at a 7″ Single I found from the band Eyes. This single I found is really cool in my book. It is a Scandinavian release of the band’s single “Nobody Said It Was Easy” off their 1990 debut album ‘Eyes’. The album was off the Curb Records label, but that was in the U.S. For this release we get Sonet Grammofon AB and I love how the label on the record looks with the Sonet logo on it. I can’t imagine there are a ton of these out there as they were an obscure band, but thanks to Discogs, I now have a copy. I doubt I’ll ever see one out it in the wild here in the U.S.

The song was obviously released as a single, but I don’t think it ever charted anywhere which is a shame. The B-Side of the vinyl is also from the debut album and is called “Start Livin'”. I don’t have any back stories to the songs as information on the band Eyes is really hard to come by. Maybe if I ever get to sit down with Jeff, I can ask him about them.

SIDE A:

The second ballad on the album is the stellar “Nobody Said It Was Easy”. It opens with Jeff Scott Soto and a piano accompaniment which I believe might also be Jeff. When we get to the chorus, it goes big with the full band joining in, but Jeff still delivers the emotive vocals that still make it feel heartfelt. I will admit the song is a little cheesy in its overdramatic delivery, but Jeff still draws you in with his vocals and he hits some crazy high notes which I love it when he does. With the full range of backing vocals you could see everyone holding up their lighters during a live show, wave them back and forth and sing along. If this was today, it would be cell phones if you are too young to understand the lighter reference. Plus, they throw in the obligatory guitar solo and all is right in the world and another great ballad is released upon the world.

There is an error on the label though. The label says the song was written by band members Steven Dougherty, Jeff Scott Soto and Aldy Damian but that isn’t true. The song was written by drummer Aldy Damian but the co-writers were Gloria Sklerov and Harry Lloyd. It was an older song that Aldy had been tweaking for years.

SIDE B:

The bells toll and then a scream of “Midnight” and the song goes crazy full of drums fills and guitar riffs for days. “Start Livin'” has this anthemic chorus that feels huge, some great guitar riffs between the verses and although not the strongest song, it still packs a punch and a nice way to close out the album. The song was written by drummer Aldy Damian, guitarist Steven Dougherty, and singer Jeff Scott Soto.

And there you have it. Now on to the band that started it all for me with Jeff Scott Soto.
