Turntables & Vinyl #26 – The Matt Nathanson Collection

Discogs is dangerous. Let’s be honest about it. I am a huge fan of a few bands that I want to collect as much as I can. And Discogs lets me know what I am missing and I can buy off it as well which is even more dangerous. After a lot of work, I think I have one of everything listed on Discogs for Matt Nathanson with only a few minor exceptions. I have a total of 37 pieces in the collection. I say they are minor because 2 I’ve never ever seen for sale…ANY WHERE!! And the other isn’t even listed on Discogs yet and is related to Matt’s most expensive fan club which we’ll talk about later.

Matt came out with his first album in 1993 and it was a time when there was really only CDs and his first set of albums were only released on CDs and as a result that is what I had to collect which I did.

His debut was 1993’s Please

Then in 1997 was Earnst

In 1998, he released Not Colored Too Perfect...

1999 saw him release Still Waiting for Spring which my copy is actually signed…

And lastly, we have 2003’s Beneath the Fireworks which was his first major label debut…

As far as live albums go, he had one that came out in 2006 called At the Point which is only on CD…

He even has a number of E.P.’s that were only available on CD and I have all of those as well. Starting with When Everything Meant Everything in 2002…

There was Plus in 2003…

And Slow But Speeding in 2007…

Finally, there were a pair of E.P.’s taken from his in store appearances with the two part Left & Right…Part 1 was Live @ FingerPrints / Live @ Park Ave. and Part 2 was Live @ Newbury Comics / Live @ Music Millennium

Then he finally started releasing albums on Vinyl, but that didn’t happen until later and sometimes years after the album was out on CD. And all of those albums, I have on both CD and Vinyl. And so yes, from that point on I have every album on vinyl. Here are the studio albums…

First is 2007’s Some Mad Hope which my brother-in-law was the engineer on…

Then 2011’s smash hit album Modern Love

In 2013, we saw him release Last of the Great Pretenders

Show Me Your Fangs came out in 2015…

2018 saw one of my favorites with Sings His Sad Heart...

Lastly, we have his 2022 album Boston Accent…wait…the CD was 2022, the vinyl actually didn’t shop up until February 2023, worth the wait though. I like the fact the vinyl and CD have different covers….

…and then there were 2 E.P’s and 1 full LP of Cover tunes…all only available on Vinyl. First is my personal favorite, the Def Leppard Covers album Pyromattia in 2018…

Then in 2019, we got Postcards (from Chicago) which he covered various songs from his friends…

And the last Covers album was a full album of U2 Covers called Achtung Matty

And he has one live album on vinyl called Live in Paradise: Boston…and if you get the Deluxe package, you even got about 20 extra digital songs from the tour on top of the album….

Then Discogs showed me there are a lot of Promotional CD singles…so yes, I now have those…

…with 2 minor exceptions. There are two listed on Discogs which I have never, ever seen sold anywhere. They are for the songs Headphoness (personal favorite) and the song Car Crash. Some day I will get them. There is also a promo CD for the song Laid (which I have) that has a different cover. I might get that one if I see it.

What else I’m missing? Well, one is Matt’s Christmas album called ‘Farewell December’ and the only reason that I don’t have a physical copy is that is a digital only release. The other item I’m missing is a 7″ Single exclusive to his Room @ The End of the World club that cost $20 a month. Join for 6 months at a minimum and you get an exclusive single…I haven’t seen it released yet, but it is coming and I will be missing out because $240 a year is a lot of money for a single.

Outside of those items, I would say my collection is relatively complete so that is why I am showing it off now…Here it is in all it’s glory!! Enjoy!! I know I have been enjoying them!!

Thanks for hanging around and hopefully we will have some more Turntable & Vinyl episodes soon.

  1. Did you hear this already. Matchbox twenty will have a new album out at the end of the month and guess how’s opening act on their tour?
