Welcome to 2Loud2OldMusic.com. Obviously, this is a blog about music. But what kind of music you ask. Music I like!!! Whether it is Rock, Metal, Pop, Christian, Country, New Classical, Motown, Jazz, R&B, Hip-Hop or whatever else is out there. It doesn’t have to be popular with the masses or the next big thing. It just has to be music that moves me in some way. There is nothing better than listening to music and how it makes you feel. Well, except maybe the laughter of my 2 beautiful daughters and my lovely wife.

I have been passionate about music my whole life. It all started when I was younger growing up in the 70’s & 80’s and having a lot of older siblings who had varying taste in music (I am the youngest of 7).   That led me to be exposed to a few different styles.

I had a brother or two that listened to Black Sabbath, Kiss and I vaguely remember an album (or should I say an 8 Track) by a band called Sharks. Another brother that got me exposed to bands like Def Leppard and Van Halen. And still another brother that listened to Fleetwood Mac and the Bee Gees. A sister that was more into the Pop scene and she even took me to see my first concert. Which I believe was Rick Springfield.

Watching TV, there was American Bandstand and on TBS was a wacky show in reruns called The Monkees. I was obsessed with them and as such it became the band I bought my very first Vinyl record. I had my mom order it from a TV commercial that came on during the show’s commercial breaks. Grease and Saturday Night Fever were released in the theatres and showed me how well music can bring alive a movie. Both movies used the music so differently as one was a musical and one used music to drive the story. They were awesome.

And then there were my parents. My Mom enjoyed Air Supply and I remember my dad listening to Kitaro  and Andrea Vollenweider – some weird New Age crap (but was actually really great). I even remember getting dragged while on vacation to see the Lawrence Welk tribute show with my grandmother and my parents. At the time, I absolutely cringed and hated that show, but now I actually look back on that with fond memories and realize it set up my love for music from the 50’s like Sinatra, Dean Martin, Tony Bennett and many others.

My parents didn’t discourage my music taste and let me listen to pretty much anything. That also probably had to do with the fact I was the youngest of 7 kids and my parents had just given up trying (but probably not). A lot of what I listened to I actually think my mom enjoyed as well. I remember in high school, I wanted to buy a new very expensive stereo system. Full rack system with big ass speakers and this new invention called a CD player. It seemed so cool. My dad agreed to pay half if I could come up with the other half. Well, I was working at Kroger at the time and I saved as much money as I could and eventually in 1985 I was able to get a full Kenwood Rack system with a turntable, equalizer, tuner, dual cassette deck, a CD player and 2 BIG ASS speakers. From that point on, music was what got me through life. I spent hours upon hours making mixed tapes and just listening to anything and everything I could.

I mentioned my first album up above was The Monkees Greatest Hits. My first cassette was a gift from Rosemary, a girl in the neighborhood. It was Hall & Oates H20 and still one of my favorite albums. The first CD I bought was Survivor Vital Signs. I don’t think I ever bought an 8 Track. What a pile of shit those things were. Nothing worse than in the middle of a song it would fade out to change tracks and than start back up again. Or in the car, having to wedge a piece of aluminum foil under the 8 Track in the Oldsmobile Cutless to make sure it worked. What a dumbass contraption. Thanks Bill Lear for creating that garbage.

CD’s were definitely my addiction. I ended up with well over 600 CDs (until you could download music). Even bought 3 Sony CD players (each holding 200-300 CDs) that way I had all my music in one place that only took a space about 3 feet wide and about 3 to 4 feet high and it was easily accessible. Then along came something called a mp3 and an Ipod. All my music would fit on this little box about 3-4 inches long…Wow, my mind was blown. And now, I can just sign up for a service and pay about the price of one CD a month and can stream virtually any album I want. Cool, that will save me a ton of money. I am not one that has to have the physical product or read the linear notes, even though that is still the best. I just want the music and want to be able to listen to whatever, whenever I want.

Music can stir so many emotions. It can lift you up when you feel sad. It can let you release any built up rage (especially when your stuck in traffic – it has saved me many times from ramming my car into some asshole who cut me off or rode my bumper). Music can also bring back a memory or help you build new ones (such as at a Daddy/Daughter Dance or singing at the top of your lungs with the kids when a song you all like plays).

All these things put together are why I am passionate about music. Since I can’t play an instrument or sing to save my life, I can listen to music, spread the word and support the bands that have moved me in some way over the years. I hope you enjoy the site and I can bring you some sort of listening pleasure and help you discover a band you might not know about or rediscover one you might have forgotten.

What can you expect from this site?

  • Artist Spotlights – I will spotlight artist that I can never get enough of their music, that have moved me in some way or I just feel need more publicity.
  • Album Reviews – I will review albums using my own scale of 0%-100% based on the percentage of songs I will keep in my library. So if I would keep 8 out of 10 songs than that album gets an 80%.
  • Album Release Dates – I will keep a list of all albums I am interested in hearing and their release date. I will add in ones I think other people might like and even albums my kids want. It won’t be an all inclusive list as I don’t have that much time on my hands.
  • Concert Schedules – I will keep lists of all my favorite bands that are on tour and their tour dates.
  • Rank Albums and Songs by Bands
  • Review Music Streaming Services
  • Review Books and Movies related to Music
  • Opinion Pieces on Various Music Topics
  • And whatever else I can dream up or whatever you might like to see.

Someday I hope to even do interviews. I will do my best to make sure there is enough variety to keep you wanting to come back for more whether you visit the site daily, weekly or even monthly.

  1. Love your long, detailed “About” page. I totally identify with your passion for music. I had only two siblings – a half-brother who was 16 years older, and a major early influence on my music awakening, and a sister who was 3 years younger. My brother introduced me to Fats Domino, Elvis Presley & Little Richard, his three favorites, while my sister first became obsessed with the Beatles, then CCR, then Elton John. I enjoy your blog posts.

    1. Thanks for the nice words. It means a lot. I didn’t know my siblings were influencing me until I was a lot older. It was looking back and thinking when I first learned about this band or that band and realized it was one of my brothers or sisters or even my parents. Now I hope to pass that along to my kids.

  2. John, you appear to want to achieve or express very similar things with your blog as I do. I have long been a frustrated DJ wannabe, always more than happy to turn others on to my favorite music, even though many could care less. I am obsessed with “best of” lists, especially music and films, and always happy to share those with others too but, again, some could care less. I created a music lovers group on facebook last summer, but only a handful of friends were really interested when I shared song lists or videos of songs I liked. After a friend recommended I get a job at a radio station (LOL) or start a music blog, I decided to do the latter. At the time, I had no idea there were so many other music blogs, which was probably a good thing, otherwise I would have been too intimidated to even try. It’s taken a while to gain followers, but am getting them slow but sure. I try to support the blogs I follow, though it’s getting harder and harder to keep up as I follow more and my mailbox gets filled with posts waiting to be read. I do enjoy reading others’ opinions and thoughts about all kinds of music, discovering new artists in the process, and hope others will feel the same about my posts. Happy blogging! – Jeff

    1. Jeff, we do sound very similar. My wife suggested I do the blog and I looked into it and thought it would be fun. And it has been. It has also been hard to find time to read other blogs, but I am trying to check others whenever I can as there is so much good stuff to read like your post today on the Nintetyten. I am now following them as well and really enjoyed the songs you have listed. It is great to discover different artists and I do love talking about bands that I enjoy. I think this will be a great experience that I will find rewarding. Have a great weekend, John.

  4. 7 siblings?! Wow. How cool. Music is so so important-as you have mentioned. My taste in music is varied as well. Now that I live in the UK my musical horizon has broadened. But some days I miss home and just have to listen to an American artist from my youth…then eveything is ok. Looking fwd to checking out your blog.

  5. Interesting background. My first record was “I’m a Believer” by the Monkees. Eight-tracks? Yeah, they sucked. Clicked off right at a key point in “Free Bird” as I recall. But then my vinyl records always wound up skipping. Anyway, thanks for the follow on my site and I’ll be sure to check out some more of your posts as time permits.

  10. I’m thrilled to have stumbled across your music site via Jeff, the Eclectic Music Lover!

    For as long as I can remember, my appreciation and taste in music has been somewhat eclectic. However, I have some obvious leanings towards certain artists in genres like alternative rock and pop rock. The first bands I grew up listening to were records from my dad’s vinyl collection. They included The Beatles, Led Zeppelin and The Eagles. Later I was introduced to Kiss courtesy of my older cousin. Eventually I began to discover music for myself, everything from electronic pop, folk and country. 90’s music is my favourite decade where I discovered and still love Pearl Jam (my all time favouite band).

  12. Hi, I love your page. Im 47 years old and love music since I was a kid. My father bought me kiss dynasty when I was 8 years old and that was my first vinyl. I a huge kiss fan since then, but I like rock pop etc. I began collecting (again) vinyl since 2016 and I also love going to record stores to buy vinyl ( in my case my wife doesn’t replay know how much money I spent on vinyl jajaj!).

    1. Thanks Lana. Sorry you are having issues. Honestly, I don’t know anything about the subscription button. Is that the Follow button? I checked the WordPress settings and can’t see anything that might be wrong. I know I have been having trouble liking posts if I don’t go through reader. I will keep looking and let you know what I find. Thanks for stopping by.

  21. Hi John! I share much of your musical passion. I remember one of the best days of my life as a teenager was receiving a shipment of CD’s from Columbia House, including Nirvana’s ‘In Utero’, Alice in Chains’ ‘Dirt’, Red Hot Chili Peppers ‘Blood Sugar Sex Magik’, Stone Temple Pilots ‘Core’, ‘Soundgarden’s ‘Superunknown’ and several others…music I still jam to this day. I had a wall of CD’s, and still have a few hundred. It’s been onto vinyl for me as well – I have a library of just over 2,000. I’ve slowed down on the collecting, but it’s nice to have it all around. Something sacred about physical media in a digital age!
