My Sunday Song – “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by The Darkness

For My Sunday Song #432, we are going for pure fun and a love for 80’s rock with “I Believe In A Thing Called Love” by the band The Darkness. The song was the third single off this 2003 debut album ‘Permission to Land’. The song went to #1 in their home country of the UK, but in the states it didn’t fair as well. It did go to #23 on the Mainstream Rock Chart and #9 on the Alternative Chart and it did go Platinum with over 1 million copies sold. The song for me brought back the fun that songs can have and the good feelings they can bring.

The song was written by the band including Justing Hawkins, Dan Hawkins, Frankie Poullain and Ed Graham. At one Justin had stated that the bands during this time were afraid to write a song about Love…so he did. It is somewhat comical feel to the song due to Justin’s vocals, but it does have a powerful message. It simply states that love can be life changing and have a significant impact on you as a person. It can change your life, upend your world and move you in ways you have never have been before. It is the utter belief in love that matters.

What I love about the song, and the video, is its playfulness in both its music and vocals. Justin’s falsetto’s are sick. No one sings like this anymore and honestly, no one really can but Justin. His range is crazy…such a talent. The music is guitar heavy with killer riffs and a blistering solo. The bass thumps away driving the song as well as those heart pounding drums. A throwback to the 80’s in style and sound and we are all the better for it. It is pure fun like 80’s music used to be. It doesn’t take itself to seriously, but these guys are seriously great musicians and singers. A mind blowing introduction for me to this band.

My Sunday Song – “Not Over You” by Gavin DeGraw

For My Sunday Song #424, we are going the opposite direction from last week and going from Rap Metal to pure Pop Bliss. The song is “Not Over You” by Gavin DeGraw. It was the debut single from his album ‘Sweeter’ which came out on September 20, 2011. The single came out on May 17, 2011 and went 4X Platinum in the U.S. hitting #18 on the Billboard Hot 100 and going to #1 Adult Pop Airplay chart. It also charted throughout several countries across the globe. I remember the first time I heard it and I was hooked.

The song was written by Gavin along with OneRepublic’s own Ryan Tepper who is killer pop songwriter. Ryan also produced it along with Jerrod Bettis. The song is about exactly what the title says. He isn’t over his last love. He says he is over her but he really isn’t. The trigger is when he sits down at a restaurant all by himself at a table set for two. He is then to face it head one that he isn’t over her. I also like the part where he said if he was asked he was doing, he would lie and say he is doing just fine to save his pride that he really isn’t. A thought provoking song that shows how sometimes he can be hard to get over someone. What I really I love is how the video shows that she isn’t over him either and they wind up together again.

The main driver musically is Gavin’s keyboards. They are vibrant and bouncy and so catchy. The drums make the song feel alive. It is all upbeat and fun. Gavin’s vocals are smooth, exciting and emotive. The melody of the song is so freaking catchy and is a pure ear worm gem. This is pop music done to pure perfection. Any song that makes you sing it after it is over, is pure gold.

My Sunday Song – “I’m Not That Way” by Journey

For My Sunday Song #396, we are now on to Mike Ladano’s sixth pick and this time around it is a ballad from Journey called “I’m Not That Way”. The song is on the 2000 album ‘Arrival’ and sees singer Steve Augeri on lead vocals. Of course you still have Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain two friends that will be friends forever…cough, cough. As well as Ross Valory and Deen Castronovo two other regulars of the band. This song was written by Schon, Cain, Augeri and Kim Tribble

The song seems to be about a guy who loves awoman and that woman was with another man. But they broke up and her heart is broken. He so wants to move in and tell her he loves her and he won’t do the things her old boyfriend did as he’s not that way. But he feels it might be too soon as she is still reeling as he holds her in his arms and she is still crying over the love she just loss. Yeah, dude…probably too soon. You will be a rebound and not the deep, true love you are wanting from her. Be patient…but not too patient as she might rebound with somebody else. Just my two cents.

The song is a ballad as Journey does do those well. A slow tempo, some soft guitar picking by Neal. Augeri’s vocals are as soft and tender as Neal’s playing. You can hear Ross’ bass line lay down a smooth groove. The song though for me, doesn’t pick up enough in the chorus for me to really get connected to it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good song as it is, but I don’t know if it is enough to have kept it on the album.
