Every decade gives us crappy songs and the 80’s probably gave us one of the worst songs I have ever heard. I find it amazing that this song actually received steady rotation on MTV. What is the song you ask? It is “Fish Heads” by Barnes & Barnes.
Now I think the song actually came out in 1978 and was a favorite of Dr. Demento’s radio show, but that doesn’t help its case for me. Even knowing that actor, Bill Paxton, was the appeared in the video still doesn’t help. I think I saw somewhere he was also the director. That just makes me think less of Bill Paxton (that and Twister didn’t help).
I know this was a comedy bit, but it is so gawd awful. I can’t find one redeeming thing about this song. Maybe I am too dense to be in on the joke. See what you think and if you don’t die from a brain hemorrhage, let me know your thoughts.

I think there’s a tipping point though – where a song becomes so bad that it starts to become enjoyable again. This one may fit that description!

LOL, it’s totally awful and painful to listen to. My pick for the worst song ever – a tie actually, since there are two by the same artist – are “Boom Boom Pow” and “Imma Be” from the Black-Eyed Peas. Both were massive #1 hits, which makes them all the more loathsome to me. The lyrics are stupid and Fergie’s vocals are like nails on a chalkboard to me. At least “Fish Heads” was meant to be a joke, whereas these were not. Never have been a fan of the BEP, though I do really like “I Gotta Feeling.”

Yes BEP are pretty awful. I can’t stand I Got A Feeling just as much as the other two you listed. They are what is wrong with modern radio.

I’d take a truckload of Fish Heads over anything from the ouevre of Bieber. I also reserve a special black hate for Achy Breaky Heart, and a seething writhing hate for all of those crap dance hits like Who Let The Dogs Out and Whoomp There It Is.
And then there’s the Macarena…

All of those are extremely awful and could easily be right up there. The dance craze songs are some of the absolute worse. Nothing worse than going to a party/wedding and they break out the Macarena.

Throw in Gangnam Style, I Am A Gummy Bear, Barbie Girl, Love Fool, I Like To Move It, Rebecca Black’s Friday, Ice Ice Baby, Snow’s Informer, Call Me Maybe, and all those boy bands like New Kids and Backstreet and Directionless and whatever and you could destroy all reason as well.

No problem for me at all. Opinions are fine in life, we all have them. The song has done well for us. Seriously, 99% of everything I read about it is positive. The song is a bit of silliness, nothing deep there. Is what it is. I believe we captured the ultimate marriage of melody to lyrics, and that’s why it did well. Right in the middle of the disco era, don’t forget. Have fun, you guys..
