My Sunday Song – “Do You Love Me” by Guster

For My Sunday Song #52, I have gone with the peppy little jaunt called “Do You Love Me” by the band Guster.  The song is from the 2010 album called ‘Easy Wonderful’ which was their sixth studio album.  The song is their biggest hit which reached #9 on the Adult Album Alternative chart.  They have not had a Hot 100 hit.

For those out there that don’t know Guster, they are an American alternative rock band.  They are also labeled as a Jangle Pop band.  Jangle pop is defined as follows (per wikipedia)…

Jangle pop is a subgenre of pop rock that emphasizes trebly, ringing guitars (usually twelve-string electrics) and pop melodies reminiscent of those from the 1960s.

That definition would describe this song.  What I love about the song is twofold.  First, the music and melodies of the song are so catchy, poppy and just plain fun.  You can’t help but feel good when you hear the song.  It is very infectious.

Second, however when you listen to the song it is something else.  It is actually a sad story.  The lyrics tell of someone that is longing to find out if this person loves them.  They desire deeply to know the answer to their question of “Do You Love Me?” but the answer doesn’t seem to come.  Lyrically for me it is a masterpiece.  So many great phrases that meld so well together and make the song very memorable.  I heard  it in the grocery store one day and I couldn’t help singing it out loud (even though it was a whisper so no one would hear me).

Now I also love the video for the song.  The video is so quirky and bizarre and I love it. It has nothing to do with the story (or at least I don’t see it).  There are great special effects that add to its quirkiness.  I mean the video is really out there and you have to see it to believe it.  It is awesome and adds to the fun loving spirit of the music (not the lyrics).

I hope you enjoy and Happy Sunday!!

“Do You Love Me”

We were young, twenty one, all those years ago
In came a fascination, everything is under control
Full of life, untried, through thickets and through thorns
Out came a revelation, everything is out of control

Do you feel it?
Do you feel it now?
Want it, but you don’t know how?
Have it, as much as anybody ever has?
I wanna wake you from your dream,
I wanna know just who you’re talking to when your singin’ in your sleep
I wanna find out what it means
Do you love me?

I got marbles in my mouth
Thousand words I wanna say but it’s impossible to spit em out
I can barely make a sound
Do you love me?

Now we’re fine, all right, but all those days are gone
We read our constellations, everything is under control
Are you tired, I’m tired
The tv sparks and glows
The news man gives information, everything is under control

Do you feel it?
Do you feel it now?
Want it, but you don’t know how?
Have it, as much as anybody ever has?
I wanna wake you from your dream,
I wanna know just who you’re talking to when your singin’ in your sleep
I wanna find out what it means
Do you love me?

I got marbles in my mouth
Thousand words I wanna say but it’s impossible to spit em out
I can barely make a sound
Do you love me?

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do [x4]

Do you feel it?
Do you feel it now?
Want it, but you don’t know how?
Have it, as much as anybody ever has?
I’m the king and you’re the queen
Maybe I’m not the one that you’re singin’ to in your sleep
I wanna find out what it means
Do you love me, love me?

Do do do do do, do do do do do do do [x4]
