My Sunday Song – “Let’s Go Crazy” by Prince

For My Sunday Song #73, I am going with “Let’s Go Crazy by Prince.  This is the first one of 2018, so let’s get a little crazy and start the year off with a legend. By the end of the year, I will be 50 so we need to go a little nuts this year in preparation for that milestone.  The song came out in 1984 and was off the album ‘Purple Rain’.  It was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and might be his most recognizable song.  I think everyone knows this song and if you don’t, shame on you.

The song opens with Prince giving a eulogy accompanied by an organ and it definitely makes it feel like a funeral.  That doesn’t last long and the song kicks in and rocks out.  The outro of the song is Prince showing that he was no slouch on the electric guitar.  It was one of the best guitar solos you will hear in a song.  A freakin’ masterpiece.  It was this song that made everyone fall in love with Prince.  He crossed over genres and even metal heads thought the man was amazing and damn he could play.

When reading the lyrics, the song seems to be about the battle of good and evil.  The devil will try and take you down the elevator, but you need to fight and punch a “higher floor” (God maybe?).  It also seems to be about finding that meaning in life and strive for that.  It seems to have a lot of different meanings.  Now, I am not sure what the “purple banana” is, but sounds like something we should all look for though.  I found this article that spoke about the Purple Banana and it was an interesting take on the song.  Give it a click and check it out.  They basically ask the questions…

Is Prince singing that we are so crazy that we look for a non-existing purple banana and that ‘they’ will transport us to an institution? Or perhaps there is a deeper esoteric meaning in this song?

No matter what meaning you take from the song, there is denying it is one great song.  So, take the song literally and go a little crazy this year!!  Have a little fun, but be safe too!!  What ever you do, make it a great year.  Happy Sunday!!

“Let’s Go Grazy”

Dearly beloved
We are gathered here today
To get through this thing called lifeElectric word life
It means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here to tell you
There’s something else
The afterworld

A world of never ending happiness
You can always see the sun, day or night

So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills
You know the one – Dr Everything’ll Be Alright
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how much of your mind, baby

‘Cause in this life
Things are much harder than in the afterworld
In this life
You’re on your own

And if the elevator tries to bring you down
Go crazy – punch a higher floor

If you don’t like the world you’re living in
Take a look around you
At least you got friends

You see I called my old lady
For a friendly word
She picked up the phone
Dropped it on the floor
Uh uh was all I heard

Are we gonna let the elevator
Bring us down
Oh, no Let’s Go!

Let’s go crazy
Let’s get nuts
Let’s look for the purple banana
‘Til they put us in the truck, let’s go!

We’re all excited
But we don’t know why
Maybe it’s cause
We’re all gonna die

And when we do (When we do)
What’s it all for (What’s it all for)
U better live now
Before the grim reaper come knocking on your door

Tell me, are we gonna let the elevator bring us down
Oh, no let’s go!

Let’s go crazy
Let’s get nuts
Look for the purple banana
‘Til they put us in the truck, let’s go!

C’mon baby
Let’s get nuts
Yeah

Are we gonna let the elevator bring us down
Oh, no let’s go!
Go crazy

I said let’s go crazy (Go crazy)
Let’s go, let’s go
Go
Let’s go

Dr. Everything’ll be alright
Will make everything go wrong
Pills and thrills and dafodills will kill
Hang tough children

He’s coming
He’s coming
Coming

Take me away!

  1. Fabulous track – when I saw the Dixie Chicks last year, they had this recording playing (the whole song) when they dimmed the lights to announce they were coming out soon.
It made an already great show even better!

  2. The full extended version is the way to go! After visiting the Prince Exhibition at the O2 in London i’m listening to all his albums again chronologically and will be blogging my thoughts in the coming days. Check it out if you fancy it.
