For My Sunday Song #220 and the last one in the Matt Nathanson 10 song set is “Come on Get Higher” off his 2007 album ‘Some Mad Hope’. This is the one song that people most definitely know as it was his biggest hit. It didn’t break the Top 40, but it did sell over 2 million copies of the song alone which is why it is his biggest hit.
The song is about a lost love and missing them terribly. He longs for her touch and even misses the bad parts with her violent words and sweet words she would yell at him. It sounds like a very dysfunctional relationship, but when it was good, it sounds sensual, sexy and amazing and when it was bad, it was truly bad. Despite all that he wants to show her that it can work out and they would be amazing. Matt has way of writing that is so sexual without being obscene or even vulgar. It is more sensual and sexy. Lyrics like…
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me in love
It is those little touches in his lyrics that make his song magical and the songs so memorable. It is another shining example of why I think he is such an underrated songwriter.
Now musically, this isn’t like a lot of his songs where the lyrics and music contradict each other. This one the music is just as sensual and sexy as the lyrics. It is a slower tempo which sounds like more of an acoustic track with a softness and tenderness that it touches your heart in ways all good songs should do. It makes you miss the girl as much as he does. Matt’s vocals are some of his best and he matches that same tenderness the music does and he is as sensual as that soft touch he longs for from the girl. The lyrics and music work together like a wonderful night with the woman you love (or man, whatever you choose).
Give the song a listen and let me know what you think. Am I off base or does it move you too? Thanks for stopping by and I hope you have a wonderful and Happy Sunday!
“Come On Get Higher”
I miss the sound of your voice
And I miss the rush of your skin
And I miss the still of the silence
As you breathe out and I breathe in
If I could walk on water
If I could tell you what’s next
I’d make you believe
I’d make you forget
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me in love
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me in love
I miss the sound of your voice
Loudest thing in my head
And I ache to remember
All the violent, sweet
Perfect words that you said
If I could walk on water
If I could tell you what’s next
I’d make you believe
I’d make you forget
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me in love
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me in love
I miss the pull of your heart
I taste the sparks on your tongue
I see angels and devils
And God, when you come on
Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on
Sing sha la la la
Sing sha la la la la
Ooo Ooo Ooo…
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me in love
So come on, get higher, loosen my lips
Faith and desire and the swing of your hips
Just pull me down hard
And drown me, drown me in love
It’s all wrong, it’s all wrong
It’s all wrong, it’s so right
So come on, get higher
So come on and get higher
‘Cause everything works, love
Everything works in your arms.

I must have missed something. What’s the significance of this Matt Nathanson dude?

I’m just a massive fan. I discovered him back in the early 2000’s with his cover of the song “Laid” and then caught a couple albums and I was hooked. I’ve seen him live 3 times and he is such a great performer and singer. And then his song just connect with me. I think he is utterly brilliant. Lastly, a few years after I had been a fan, I found out my brother-in-law was actually the engineer on a couple of his albums. He then got me and my daughter in to one of Matt’s shows and we met him. He treated my daughter like she was the most important person in the room and from then on he had my complete respect.

I can see why you’re a fan of Nathanson. He does provide a light alternative for me on a Sunday morning, especially on morning like today where I’ve been listening to Sword and Saxon.

Thanks for stopping by. I’m glad the alternative was helpful. He is quite different then those too; however, he is massive metal fan so he probably likes both of those bands.

So the song sells over 2 million yet doesn’t crack the Top 40?? Thats some true staying power!
Great job on this series John,

Thanks Deke. Yeah, he is like on the fringe of being popular, but his fan base is rabid enough to keep him going without the hits. Hell, I buy everything he puts out without even listening to it. He just put out a surprise Christmas album and if he releases it on vinyl, I’ll buy it and I normally hate Christmas albums, but I like his. Man…I must be a diehard fan.

That you are is a diehard. Nothing wrong with that John. We all have our bands or artists that we are die hards for.

Usually, I tend to like when there’s that contrast between the music & lyrics.
But sometimes, as you pointed out that they are here, it’s nice when they’re on the same page!

It all depends on the song I guess.

This is the song that introduced me to Matt Nathanson. It’s a beautiful song, and probably my favorite song of his.

I think it might the only song most people know. But once you dive in to the rest, its over. You are hooked…at least for me.

He’s different to what I would listen to. Thanks for sharing your fandom with us.

What I like about him also is that he is a complete metal head and he loves Def Leppard and those type of bands so his influences aren’t what you’d think for how he writes and plays. He even did a Def Leppard covers EP which was AMAZING!!

That Def Leppard covers EP was the gateway to get me into his other music.
