My Sunday Song #68 is “Hold Back the River” by James Bay. You could say I have become a huge fan of this young man. I have his album “Chaos & the Calm” (on vinyl and a picture disc at that) and my daughter and I have seen him in concert (Great show – read the review HERE). He has been posting pictures on Facebook of him in the studio and a new album coming in 2018 which got me listening to him again.
When I hit this song in the playlist, I remembered how much I love this song. The quiet opening with just some slow picking on the guitar and his voice. The slow build up and a little faster pace and faster and faster. It actually has the feel that as you try to hold back the river, it get harder and harder and more intense.
In an interview with The Sun, James said the following about the song:
“I wrote it after my first really busy period as an artist, when music had taken me around the world for the first time, and at the end of the year, I’ve become really eager to see friends and my family properly. ‘Hold Back The River’ is a metaphor for that feeling.”

James Bay was in Charlotte Sunday night, September 25th, 2016. Of course, my daughter and I had to go when we heard the concert announcement back in April. When tickets went on sale, I got busy at work and completely forgot to go online and buy them. When I went on that night at home, it was SOLD OUT!!! Needless to say, my daughter was not very happy with me on that day.
I went back on to the ticket site and signed up for a text notification if any tickets become available. May comes and goes with no luck. June, pretty much the same thing until around the end of the month on June 29th. We were on vacation in Myrtle Beach and sitting in a restaurant, so I can get some seafood, when a text message pops up on my phone. I told my daughter that when we got back to the condo, we would order the tickets. Nope!! Wasn’t good enough. She was not having that. I had to go on my phone right then and there, in the restaurant, and buy the tickets. Which I did! We now had 2 tickets to the show.

Okay, this isn’t much of a throwback considering this album came out last year. However, my site didn’t exist at that time and I want to talk about how great this album is. And I mean GREAT!!
James Bay is a shining light in today’s bubblegum pop crap that stinks up the radio. He is the hope of the future of music. The true talent of all the oversaturated one-hit wonders that music companies force-feed us on a daily basis. Maybe I am overstating it a little, but the young man is talented.
I think what I am so excited about is the potential this young man has in his craft. He is only 25 years old and you can see the talent and thinking about what he could create over the next 20 years makes me smile. Now the music company doesn’t need to screw it up. They need to develop him as an artist and mold him a long & lasting career. Don’t demand hits, give him the room to create them and grow as a musician.
