The Collection: Ep. 78 – Ace Frehley: The Albums Ranked

With the passing of my first guitar hero last week, I thought it was appropriate this week to honor his memory and do a ranking of his solo albums. He had 10 albums and I have to say I do enjoy all of them so it isn’t a worst to first, more like a least favorite to most favorite. We include the Kiss solo album from 1978, the two Frehley’s Comet albums and the rest are his actual solo albums that he has done over the last 40 years. Ace was one of a kind and will certainly be missed. That boyish laugh to that Chesire grin, he was his own unique self and I think the music world is all the better for it. He influenced so many guitar players over the years and he is in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and soon will receive the Kennedy Center Honor that is so richly deserved.

So go check it out as it will air tonight, October 20th at 7pm on YouTube. Thanks for stopping by and please click “Like” and hit “Subscribe” as it helps out the site when you do.

Ace Frehley – ‘Now Playing’ (2025) – Album Review

Ace Frehley has a number of greatest hits album. Do we really need another one? The short answer is No! The long answer is we do need a solid greatest hits album that is a career retrospective of his entire catalog. I would like that very much. In 2025, we get new Ace Frehley comp from Rhino Records and Atlantic and I can tell you with 100% certainty…this is not a career retrospective and is total waste of time and money. “Now Playing” is a generic compilation that is a series and many artist have had one of these comps such as Ratt and Twisted Sister. It is a cheap, low budget comp and it only covers his first 3 solo albums outside of Kiss. Two with Frehley’s Comet and then his solo album ‘Trouble Walkin”. And that is it.

It is only a vinyl issue and was released on March 7, 2025. It is on a very pretty cobalt blue vinyl and that is the only thing it has going for it. Really, that is it. There are no special mixes, live mixes or unreleased tracks. It is simply 4 songs from “Frehley’s Comet”, 3 from “Second Sighting” and 3 from “Trouble Walkin'”. Woohoo…so exciting…NOT!!! The picture on the cover is one we’ve seen a million times, there is no insert, there is nothing special about it at ALL!! Thank goodness it only cost $19. So, why did I buy it? I have every Ace release available on vinyl so I need it to complete the collection ( I do not have every variant as my house isn’t big enough to hold all of them…I believe there were at least 30 from his last album alone). Enough negativity…let’s talk music. What is on it?

The Collection: Episode 3 – Ace Frehley

With Ace Frehley’s new album 10,000 Volts now out, I thought a perfect time to go through my entire Ace Frehley collection (excluding Kiss of course). We will go through the vinyl, the CDs, the Cassettes and the 7″ Singles.

At the end, I will give you my thoughts on the new album. Is it as good as everyone is saying? Is it as good as the ’78 Kiss solo album? You will have to watch it to find out. The show is live now, click below and give it a whirl. And don’t forget to click “Like” and “Subscribe”. While you are at it, drop us a comment as well.

Thanks for watching!!

Here is all the vinyl…

Ace Frehley – The Albums Ranked Worst to First

Ace Frehley!  This ratty kid walks into the audition with a mismatched pair of shoes and Gene and Paul are not sure what to think of this mess.  He plugs in and plays and the rest is Kisstory as they say.  Ace is the one of the main reasons I love rock & roll.  His playing was amazing and he played with such feel that you wanted to be Ace.  When you and your friends wanted to pretend to be Kiss, I always wanted Ace and if I couldn’t get Ace, I was Paul (no one wanted to be Peter, not even Peter…old joke).

His time with Kiss was tumultuous at best.  But when the band did their solo albums back in 1978, Ace showed he had the goods to do this on his own and eventually that is what he did.  Eventually due to his drinking and other issues, Ace was let go and his solo career began.  And that solo career is the focus.  We will include the Kiss solo album because it is an Ace Frehley album, but only Ace’s stuff, no other Kiss.  And only studio albums will be counted, no live or compilations.

Sit back and enjoy the ranking of the Ace Frehley albums from Worst to First…

THE WORST – FREHLEY’S COMET – SECOND SIGHTING (1988)

Now when it comes to Ace, I am a little biased.  I do enjoy all his albums so for me “worst” is a little harsh.  I would just say it is the least favorite and not really the “worst”.  I have heard some pretty awful albums and this isn’t one of them.  But, it isn’t that great either in my humble opinion.  I know some would disagree (right LeBrain!!).
