My Sunday Song – “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction

My Sunday Song #24 is “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction.  Since this is now my wife’s series, I will let her explain why she chose this song…enjoy!

The man upstairs has had his hands in this My Sunday Song thing I’ve been asked to do! At the first of the year, my husband wanted at least 3 – 4 of my Sunday Song write ups all at once. Truth be told, I didn’t even have one at the time he asked. I’m thinking to myself, “Geez, glad I don’t work for this guy”! Anyway, I wrote up the approaching My Sunday Song and then provided him with a list of songs for the remaining 8 weeks…which brings me to week 4 and the My Sunday Song I had already selected weeks ago: “What Makes You Beautiful” by One Direction. You are likely wondering where I am going with all this blabber, so stay with me for a minute.

I had already decided I was going to write today but needed to run to a very popular and large beauty store. This store is AH-MAZING and has everything you can think of related to makeup and hair! I needed a couple of hair products and one makeup product. I like to browse around and I usually already know what I’m looking for because I’ve already done my research on Pinterest and looked to see what the best sellers are, etc. A sweet lady approached me to ask if I was finding everything okay and could she help me. I normally say “no thank you” and quickly walk away to another aisle hoping they won’t follow me and try to sell me something. But, this time I did need help. Actually, I need lots of help but that’s a story for another time. I let her know that I was looking for something to hide the puffiness under my eyes and something that would not settle into the lines that have so graciously developed in the aging process. Of course she had just the right productS! Yes, products, as in plural, multiple, more than one, even more than two! All I wanted was a simple concealer to cover up my under eye concerns.

As I was driving home, I started thinking about the myriad of products that many women put on their faces each day, from the teen years up to my age and maybe beyond. I’m really not that old by the way! This song by One Direction hits the nail on the head! “Don’t need make-up, to cover up, being the way that you are is enough.” Maybe this is the message that my now 9 year old heard loud and clear all those mornings in the carpool lane at 7:30am that made her want to jam out to this song every single day. It also could’ve been Zayn, not sure? I’m forever telling my girls “beauty comes from inside” and I think a lot of people say that same thing but they don’t truly believe the words themselves, for themselves. Maybe I don’t need that concealer after all. (You don’t baby!! You are beautiful in every way!!)

“What Makes You Beautiful”

[Verse 1]
[Liam]
You’re insecure,
Don’t know what for,
You’re turning heads when you walk through the door,
Don’t need make-up,
To cover up,
Being the way that you are is enough,[Bridge]
[Harry]
Everyone else in the room can see it,
Everyone else but you,

[Chorus]
[All]
Baby you light up my world like nobody else,
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground it ain’t hard to tell,
You don’t know,
Oh, oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful,
If only you saw what I can see,
You’d understand why I want you so desperately,
Right now I’m looking at you and I can’t believe,
You don’t know,
Oh, oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful,
Oh, oh,
That’s what makes you beautiful

[Verse 2]
[Zayn]
So c-come on.
You got it wrong.
To prove I’m right
I put it in a song.
I don’t know why
You’re being shy,
And turn away when I look into your eye-eye-eyes,

[Bridge]
[Harry]
Everyone else in the room can see it,
Everyone else but you,

[Chorus]
[All]
Baby you light up my world like nobody else,
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground it ain’t hard to tell,
You don’t know,
Oh oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful,
If only you saw what I can see,
You’ll understand why I want you so desperately,
Right now I’m looking at you and I can’t believe,
You don’t know,
Oh oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful,
Oh oh,

[Harry]
That’s what makes you beautiful

Na na na na na na na na na na
Na na na na na na [x2]

[Harry]
Baby you light up my world like nobody else,
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground it ain’t hard to tell,

[All]
You don’t know,
Oh oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful,

[Chorus]
[All]
Baby you light up my world like nobody else,
The way that you flip your hair gets me overwhelmed,
But when you smile at the ground it ain’t hard to tell,
You don’t know,
Oh oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful (Oh),
If only you saw what I can see,
You’ll understand why I want you so desperately ([Harry:] desperately),
Right now I’m looking at you and I can’t believe,
You don’t know,
Oh oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful,
Oh oh,
You don’t know you’re beautiful,
Oh oh,

[Harry]
That’s what makes you beautiful

  1. My hook to this post wasn’t the music or the message (sorry, not sorry!). The photo at the top is “Pure Michigan,” the state where I grew up listening to MY older brothers’ music. Those sibling tastes shaped me, as they did you. The state shaped me with old Motown and beats like Mitch Ryder. The photo is a place called Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore on Lake Superior, just one of a thousand beautiful Great Lakes images.

Kudos for your work on a terrific blog, which I found from the link at https://1betterthantheoriginal.com/

    1. Thanks for stopping by. My wife was in Michigan back in October and took some amazing pictures. She said the state was just beautiful. Since she was guest blogging, we decided to use one of her pictures. Glad you liked it.
