My Sunday Song – “The Other Side” by Colton Dixon

For My Sunday Song # 37, I chose “The Other Side” by Colton Dixon.  The song is off his new album “Identity” and if you haven’t heard it, be prepared to be impacted.  Colton is a former American Idol contestant who has found his calling in Christian Music.  This is his third album and it is an ambitious album to say the least.  I believe he has delivered a stellar collection of songs (See review HERE).

The song, “The Other Side”, has impacted me greatly.  The song is about not fearing death and how beautiful the other side is after death.  Here is Colton and his wife discussing the meaning behind the song.

For some of you, you know that I lost my mother back on August 28th, 2016 and I just lost my dad on April 4th, 2017.  It has been very difficult for me to not only lose one parent, but both so close together has made it that much harder.  I think about them everyday.  I think about all the good times we had together and how much they shaped me.  I think about how much they suffered with the dementia for my dad and the strokes for my mom and I am grateful now that they are someplace where none of that is impacting them.

When I got back to Charlotte after the funeral, I was driving to work that first day and the song “The Other Side” started playing.  I immediately lost it and started crying.  I knew what the song was about, but the meaning of it finally hit home.  I can’t listen to this song now without tearing up and immediately thinking of my parents.  I loved them very much and miss them terribly, but they are in a better place on the “other side”.

Mom and Dad, I Love You!!!

Colton has finally released the song as a single and you can check it out below. I hope the song touches you like it has me.  Happy Sunday!!

“The Other Side”

Everybody’s dressed in black
The preacher’s saying life goes too fast
The memories have turned to tears
Thinking back on all the yearsI know that you’re in a better place
But I’m still here missing you todayIt isn’t easy to say goodbye
But I know it’s only for a little while
Run up ahead and I will catch up
‘Cause I’m gonna see you when tomorrow comes
On the other side
On the other sideI bet you feel you’re finally home
Running down those streets of gold
The kind of peace you can’t explain
Looking into Jesus’ face

I know that you’re in a better place
I know I’ll be joining you someday

It isn’t easy to say goodbye
But I know it’s only for a little while
Run up ahead and I will catch up
‘Cause I’m gonna see you when tomorrow comes
On the other side

Where there are no more goodbyes
No more pain, no more tears left to cry
We will join with the angels singing their song
Praising our savior, all the day long

It isn’t easy to say goodbye
But I know it’s only for a little while
Run up ahead and I will catch up
‘Cause I’m gonna see you when tomorrow comes
On the other side
On the other side
On the other side
On the other side

  1. Wow, John, I’m filled with emotion after reading your lovely honest and heartfelt post. I’ve lost both of my parents – my mom to a sudden heart attack when I was only 24. But no matter how they die, it’s never easy. Colton Dixon’s song is so beautiful and powerful, and I can understand why it resonates so strongly with you. You’re a great guy, and I want to express my thanks to you for all the support you’ve given me and so many other bloggers. I love you man.

  2. Thanks for sharing a very personal moment, John. I often think about the power of music and, in particular, how a song can hit you like that. Those are the songs that tend to stay with you, huh?

On a lighter note, that’s some hair that chap is sporting!
