For My Sunday Song #97, we will keep it into the more recent years of power ballads and do Velvet Revolver’s “Fall To Pieces”. The song was off the band’s debut album ‘Contraband’ and went to #1 on the Mainstream Rock Charts. It was almost a crossover hit as it did reach #67 on the Billboard Hot 100.
For those that don’t know (and shame on you), Velvet Revolver consisted of lead singer Scott Weiland (Stone Temple Pilots) and Slash, Duff McKagan, Matt Sorum (all from Guns ‘N Roses) and Dave Kushner (played with Dave Navarro). The song follows the typical power ballad formula of a slower temple with some heavier moments and all with a softer sound even though theirs was a little dirtier and grittier.
The song is based on Scott Weiland’s addiction to heroin and the impact it had on his life and his relationship with is wife. The title of the song “Fall to Pieces” was exactly how Weiland felt. Now with his passing years later, you wonder if he ever didn’t feel this way. That to me makes the song a little sadder.
The music video for the song actually mirrors the events in Scott’s life and its impact. It shows the spoils of rock & roll fame and the complete dark, scary side of fame. It is a stark, disturbing picture of what a junkie can go through.
Musically, I love the guitar sound Slash created for this song. The riff he plays is a sharp contrast on the dark imagery of the song. It is really clean sounding unlike the dirty guitar sound throughout the song. That clean guitar was played through a 1966 Fender Super Reverb.
Give the song a listen and let me know what you think. I hope you enjoy it and have a Happy Sunday (despite the unhappy song).
“Fall To Pieces”
Since you’ve been gone
I’ve been alone here
I’ve grown old
I fall to pieces, I’m falling
Fell to pieces and I’m still falling
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
I keep a journal of memories
I’m feeling lonely, I can’t breathe
I fall to pieces, I’m falling
Fell to pieces and I’m still falling
All the years I’ve tried
With more to go
Will the memories die
I’m waiting
Will I find you
Can I find you
We’re falling down
I’m falling
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
Every time I’m falling down
All alone I fall to pieces
In hindsight it was all there to see. His ending was clearly in the cards for a long time. Epic track from a truly brilliant record.

I know what J is gonna say to me, but I’d like to hear Guns do this song. Slither has been sounding great.

I am with you. I think it is great to add some of the history outside the band for the tour now that is in its 2nd or 3rd year. I have lost count.

You do indeed know what I’m gonna say, Mike… so I won’t say it. Not unless GNR 89.5 decide to play it (Slither is horrendous… Axl just can’t tackle it).

Y’know, this was one of my least favourite Velvet Revolver songs for a long time… I think it was because it wasn’t the kinda tune Weiland would sing. You Got No Right was more a Weiland sounding ballad… but then something changed and I thought “this is great”. And it is great. Still. Great Sunday pick.

I’m really pleased Slash and his Band are back soon doing his thing with Myles. I wasn’t done with that band when GnR got back together .

Me too. Looking forward to the new one. Myles is incredible.

This is a good song. Kinda funny is I never bought any of the VR stuff. By than I was and still am tired of lead singer changes and what nots…
It was good to see but after buying Slash’s first couple of solo records where it was a total different lineup on two albums I got tired of it all until Kennedy joined Slash..different ball game with that band…

I can understand that. With VR though I really thought it was the best thing Slash had done at that time since GNR.

Agreed about the guitar tones in this one – well done by Slash!

I really though VR were great. I hate it didn’t go further.
