My Sunday Song – “Bawitdaba” by Kid Rock

For My Sunday Song #115, we are tackling “Bawitdaba” by Detroit’s own Kid Rock.  The song comes off his mutli-platinum selling album ‘Devil Without a Cause’.  The song came out in 1999 and the song had moderate success on the radio, but massive success on MTV.  He seemed to be everywhere in 1999/2000.

The song is a mixture of hop-hop and a little nu-metal and that combination threw Kid Rock into the mainstream, pop culture and made him a star.  Love him or hate him, he was a major part of pop culture at the time.

The lyrics weren’t poetic genius, the song made absolutely no sense, and it is hip hop which I have never been a fan.  However!!  I couldn’t help but love this song.  There was something about driving down the road, with the windows down (I didn’t have a convertible), music cranked up as high as it would go and sing the ridiculous line of “bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy”.  It was awesome!!

I will admit the metal aspects of the song spoke to me. I liked the heaviness of it and I even liked the redneck side of Kid Rock as I grew up in the redneck capital of the world.  It was also nice to see the shout out to Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight” with the sampling of pieces as well as the line “To the bang bang boogie, say, up jump the boogie”.  Obviously they were a big influence on Kid.

There isn’t much to the song, but it is a helluva lot fun. I hope you enjoyed and Happy Sunday!

“Bawitdaba”

Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy(Get Ready)
My name is KIIIIIIIIIIIID…Kid RockBawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy

And this is for the questions that don’t have any answers
The midnight glancers and the topless dancers
The candid freaks, cars packed with speakers
The G’s with the forties and the chicks with beepers
The Northern Lights and the Southern Comfort
And it don’t even matter if the veins are punctured
All the crackheads, the critics, the cynics
And all my heros in the Methodone Clinic
All you bastards at the IRS
For the crooked cops and the cluttered desks
For the shots of jack and the caps of meth
Half pints of love and the fifths of stress
For the hookers all tricking out in Hollywood
And for my hoods of the world misunderstood
I said it’s all good and it’s all in fun
Now get in the pit and try to love someone

Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Love Someone)
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Kill Someone)
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Love Someone)
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Come On)

For the time bombs ticking and the heads that hang
All the gangs getting money and the heads that bang bang
Wild mustangs the porno flicks
All my homies in the county in cell block six
The grits when there ain’t enough eggs to cook
And for DB Cooper and money he took
You can look for answers but that ain’t fun
Now get in the pit and try to love someone

What
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy
(Come On)
Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy

Love, and for the hate
And for the peace…. WARRRRRRRRRRRR

Bawitdaba da bang a dang diggy diggy diggy said the boogy said up jump the boogy

  1. He name-checked Steve Yzerman on this album’s Wasting Time (“I’m in it to win it like Yzerman”) – so it can’t be all bad! Although I don’t think Kid Rock and I share many other common views, I can’t deny the catchiness of a lot of his tunes from the late 90s/early 00s

  2. I like this one. A friend got me the album for a birthday way back… I was thinking “eh? What’s this!?” Haven’t listened to it in a helluva long time, but I enjoyed the album. It’s good fun.
