My Sunday Song – “Bounce” by Bon Jovi

For My Sunday Song #194, I am picking the 2002 song “Bounce” from the album of the same name.  The song was actually released as the fourth single on June 15, 2003 and only reached #39 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Track chart.  The song was written by Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora and Billy Falcon.

The song is the typical feel good, inspirational track that Bon Jovi started writing after their big return to the scene with their smash hit “It’s My Life” off their 2000 album.  They would repeat that formula over and over ad nauseum.  So, the song isn’t actually one of their best and really nothing special…so why did I pick it.  Actually, it is for the memory it creates.  It isn’t because it was dedicated to the New England Patriot’s head coach Bill Belichick, which it was.  It is filled with lots of sports analogies so I guess it makes sense.

The memory is from when my girls were really young like 5 and 2 years old. They loved this song with all its energy and the whole “bounce chorus”.  It would come on in the car and we would all sing along especially with that catchy chorus.  They would sing as loud as they could on the Bounce lyrics in the chorus.  It was so much fun. They might not remember those moments, but I will never forget.

Musically, the song is full of energy and has a great opening riff by Mr. Sambora and he even does his voice box thing with the guitar. However, it is Tico’s drumming that is the main driving force on the song and I think he might be the highlight of the song.  His timing and fills are fantastic, but it is those big drum hits right before the chorus that I love and are so impactful.  Like I said, it is that inspirational feel like “It’s My Life” and it really does make you feel good by the end.

Check out the song and let me know what you think.  As I said, this song is all about the memory it brings back so that is why it is special to me.  I hope you enjoy and have a Happy Sunday and remember to “Bounce”.

“Bounce”

I been knocked down so many times
Counted out 6, 7, 8, 9
Written off like some bad deal
If you’re breathing you know how it feels
Call it karma, call it luck
Me, I just don’t give a[Chorus:]
Bounce, Bounce Nothing’s gonna keep me down
Bounce, Bounce Stand up, shout it out
Bounce, Bounce I play hard, I play to win
Count me out, count me in
I’ll be bouncing back againThis ain’t no game; I play it hard
Kicked around, cut, stitched and scarred
I’ll take the hit but not the fall
I know no fear, still standing tall
You can call it karma, call it luck
Me, I just don’t give a

[Chorus:]
Bounce, Bounce Nothing’s gonna keep me down
Bounce, Bounce Stand up, shout it out
Bounce, Bounce I play hard, I play to win
Count me out, count me in
I’ll be bouncing back again

Bounce!

[Guitar Solo]

Bring it on, I like it rough
In your face, I call your bluff
It ain’t karma, it ain’t luck
Me, I just don’t give a

[Chorus:]
Bounce, Bounce Nothing’s gonna keep me down
Bounce, Bounce Stand up, shout it out
Bounce, Bounce I play hard, I play to win
Count me out, count me in
I’ll be bouncing back again

Bounce, Bounce
Nothing’s gonna keep me down
Bounce, Bounce Stand up, shout it out
Bounce, Bounce I play hard, I play to win
Count me out, count me in
I’ll be bouncing back again

  1. Those kids sing-a-long memories are priceless. It’s fun singing together in the car to Sesame Street/Raffi/etc., but when they start singing the words to our favourite artists, unforgettable!

  2. Tbone bought this so I nicked it off of him for a while and contemplated buying a copy for myself. I returned it back to him and never did buy it but this one and a few others were good.
Keep The Faith was the last good record from them as far as I’m concerned. These Days had it’s moment but Jon wanted to be a cross between Mellencamp and Springsteen. lol

    1. As I told Scott, I went one more with Have a Nice Day and haven’t bought anything since. I have streamed it all, but usually one stream and done (except for Burning Bridges and I did do a review of THINFS).
