My Sunday Song – “Scratch” by INXS

For My Sunday Song #390, we are to the final song chosen by Tim Durling of Tim’s Vinyl Confessions. The song we will go out on is a B-Side for the band INXS called “Scratch”. The song was the B-Side to the song “Just Keep Walking” off their debut, self-titled, album from 1980. The single was released in October 1980 and became the band’s first Top 40 hit in their home country of Australia. This song was never on any album, well, until their 2002 compilation album Stay Young 1979–1982.

The song seems to be about a guy who is pining for a girl. He wants her to listen to his heart as it beats for her. He knows she feels the same way and she has an itch for him too. He wants her to scratch that itch baby!! He even wrote a letter to the Sunday paper telling them of his love for her, but they don’t care.

This is early INXS when the New Wave movement was getting going. It is short at just over two minutes, but it has so much to offer in that short time. Some great guitar riffs that race through with an immediate urgency. The drum beat is his heart pounding for the girl. Micheal’s vocals, man they sound so young, but he takes full command and he sounds great. His annunciation isn’t the best, but damn he is so engaging and has so much charm in those vocals. A high energy, almost punk sound on this one and I hate I am just now hearing this one.

Billy Idol – “Sweet Sixteen” – 7″ Single (The Billy Idol Series – Bonus Edition)

If you remember my discussions last week, while at a record show here in Charlotte, I came across that Billy Idol Picture Disc for “Eyes Without A Face”, but that wasn’t all I found. I also found a couple 7″ Singles from Billy Idol as well. First up was “Hot in the City” with the B-Side “Catch My Fall”.  The other 7″ Single I found from Billy was for the song “Sweet Sixteen” off the album ‘Whiplash Smile’. The B-Side for the song was also from the album, a song called “Beyond Belief”.

The US release of this single was in April 1987 and this single is from that release. The song did great as it went to #20 on the Top 40 charts helping drive the album to sells of over 1 million copies in the US alone making it go Platinum for Billy. Both songs on the single are strictly the album versions. There are no single mixes or remixes, only the normal released songs. As a result, this is nothing new I don’t already have, but I didn’t have it in single form so I will take it to grow my Billy Idol collection.

The third single from the album was an acoustic guitar heavy ballad called “Sweet Sixteen” with a very nice bass groove added in. It might just be the best song on the album.  A nice change of pace and gave you a softer side of Billy.  The story behind the song is based on a true story about Edward Leedskalnin who was dumped by his fiancée Agnes Scuffs the day before their wedding. To try and win her back, he built a monument complete with furniture made of coral, in Homestead, Florida called Coral Castle.  Sadly, she still didn’t want him. Oh well, it is now a little tourist attraction…although quite weird.  Edward’s nickname for Agnes was “Sweet Sixteen”.

Nazareth – “Love Hurts” – The 45 Single

“Love Hurts” is a classic song by the band Nazareth. But did you know it is actually a cover? Nope, me neither. It is the most famous version of the song and the first time it was ever a hit single in the US. The song was actually written by Boudleaux Bryant and recorded by the Everly Brothers back in 1960. However it didn’t reach the charts and wasn’t a hit until Nazareth covered it in 1975 and included on their album ‘Hair of the Dog’. It reached #8 in the US and went Gold. Not too shabby.

The song is about a man who discovers that young love is so hot, but it burns out just as hot and fast. When the flame goes out it burns, it hurts and is painful. He is telling those that are so in love and all they are doing is talking about it that in the end love fades and you will get burned. It is a really sad song when you think about it. They kept pretty true to the original song only changing the one line “love is like a stove/it burns you when it’s hot” and changing it to be “love is like a flame/it burns you when it’s hot”. I have to admit, flame is way better than stove.
