For My Sunday Song #263, we are discussing the song “Even If It Breaks Your Heart” by Will Hoge. The song is off his 2009 album ‘The Wreckage’ and was written by Will and Eric Paslay. The song was released as a single by Will but didn’t chart. The song was later covered by The Eli Young Band in 2012 and they had a lot of success with it going to #1 on the Country Charts. And they do a great version, but I love me some Will Hoge so that is what we are discussing.
The song is about how you need to keep on dreaming and driving forward with your goals. There are going to be a lot of “no’s” and “you can’t do thats” along the way. Your heart is going to be broken, a lot…but don’t give up and keep on fighting. Will got turned down so many times and was told he wasn’t good enough, but he showed them they were all wrong and has become a very successful songwriter and musician. He lives what he was singing and is great advice for everyone.
Musically it is more like a ballad with a country flair. It has a great groove and some fine acoustic guitar playing as well as nice what sounds like slide guitar playing as well. It has a down home, southern rock feel as well. Will’s gritty vocals give the song a lived that feeling like he has done exactly what the lyrics say to do. He makes you believe it. For me, it is really a beautiful, heartfelt song.
My Sunday Song #72 is “Don’t Give Up” by Ryan Star. Tomorrow is January 1st, New Year’s Day. I thought it would be nice to end the year with this song as I think it is appropriate as 2017 saw a year where so many musicians took their own life and suicide prevention became top of mind. Even a song was released with the suicide prevention hotline number as the title of the song (“1-800-273-8255” by Logic).
“Don’t Give Up” is a piano ballad and Ryan sounds amazing on it. It is a moving and an inspirational song written by Ryan Star which is telling you to do just that…don’t give up!. There are people out there that love you no matter what happens in your life. If 2017 was a bad year for you, think of the possibilities that 2018 might hold. Get back on your feet and fight another day.
Ryan Star is one of my favorite singer/songwriters to come along in many years and I wish he got more press and radio time as he deserves it. It is songs like this on why I love his music so much. Give the song a listen and I hope it inspires you in some way!
I recently read an article on Mike Tramp that said he was releasing a limited edition box set called “This and That” which would contain 5 CDs and 1 DVD of previously unreleased material as well as some new tracks. It sounds interesting and got me to thinking about his old band White Lion. And I immediately remembered ‘Pride’.
Little did I know at the time that ‘Pride’ was not their debut album. They actually had an album prior called ‘Fight to Survive’ that never amounted to anything. Since “My First Time” is supposed to be the first time I discover a band and it is not on their debut album, then ‘Pride’ worked.
‘Pride’ came out in 1987 slap dab in the middle of the Hair Band explosion. That means BIG HAIR!! Did White Lion have it…uh…YES…
