Turntables & Vinyl #3 – Mother Lode

I hit the mother lode last weekend while I was visiting family in Atlanta.  The conversation somehow ended up on Vinyl records and my sister-in-law mentioned she had some old albums laying around.  My brother found the box and in it were 4 albums on my wish list…Def Leppard’s ‘Pyromania’ and ‘Hysteria’; Whitesnake’s self-titled album and Bon Jovi’s ‘Slippery When Wet’.  I couldn’t believe my luck.  Of course, when I left their house, for some reason I left the Bon Jovi album there.  I will make sure to grab it next time I am down.  BTW, they were in phenomenal shape.

Now, I could tell my sister-in-law was very iffy about letting me “have” the albums.  But she did give them to me to “borrow”.  I really do appreciate it and I will keep them in great shape.  Maybe I will return them someday…Kidding!!  I will give them back if she asks…and says pretty please.

It gets better.  The next day I am at my sister’s house and I mention to my brother-in-law what I got and he states he has a box full of albums down in the basement.  I know what his musical taste is so I started salivating.  And let’s just say I was not disappointed in the very least.  And when he said a box full, let’s just say my collection has significantly increased.  If you would like to know what was in the box, well, I am going to tell you.  If you don’t, then why are you reading my posts??

First off, he had another copy of Def Leppard’s ‘Pyromania’ as well.  This means I can go ahead and give my sister-in-law back her copy.  He also had some albums that I already had on vinyl such as Boston’s ‘Don’t Look Back’, Pat Benatar’s ‘Crime of Passion’, Aldo Nova’s ‘Subject’, and the ‘Star Wars’ Soundtrack’.

As I started digging, I was freaking out.  He had a couple more that were on my wish list.  Led Zeppelin’s ‘House of the Holy’, AC/DC’s ‘Back in Black’ and Pink Floyd’s ‘Dark Side of the Moon’.  I couldn’t believe my luck.

There were a ton more so I will just list them all now:

  • Cheap Trick – ‘At Budokan’
  • Chicago’s – ‘Greatest Hits’
  • Kansas – ‘Point of No Return’
  • Foreignor – ‘Head Games’
  • Foreignor – ‘ Double Vision’
  • ELO – ‘Out of the Blue’
  • ELO – ‘A New World Record’
  • Journey – ‘Infinity’
  • Blackfoot – ‘Tomcattin”
  • Blackfoot – ‘Strikes’
  • Blue Oyster Cult – ‘Fire of Unknown Origin’
  • The Eagles – ‘The Long Run’
  • Dio – ‘The Last in Line’
  • Aerosmith – ‘Night in the Ruts’
  • Bryan Adams – ‘Reckless’
  • Krokus – ‘Hardwire’
  • Missing Persons – ‘Spring Session M’
  • Molly Hatchet – ‘Flirtin’ with Disaster’
  • Mother’s Finest – ‘Another Mother Further’
  • Ted Nugent – ‘Ted Nugent’
  • Ted Nugent – ‘Scream Dream’
  • Van Halen – Van Halen II
  • Pat Travers Band – ‘Crash And Burn’
  • Pat Travers – ‘Heat in the Street’
  • Styx – ‘Pieces of Eight’
  • Styx – ‘Cornerstone’
  • Max Webster – ‘Universal Juveniles’

It was amazing going through the box.  My brother-in-law is a huge Rush fan and I thought it was strange I hadn’t come across any Rush Albums.  That was only because the Rush albums were at the back of the stack.  And there were 6 of them.

  • Rush – ‘Moving Pictures’ (This was also on my wish list)
  • Rush – ‘Permanent Waves’
  • Rush – ‘Caress of Steel’
  • Rush – ‘A Farewell to Kings’
  • Rush – ‘Fly By Night’
  • Rush – ‘Hold Your Fire’

I have to say I was in heaven.  It will take me a long while to get through all of them, but don’t you worry, it will happen.  I have to thank my brother-in-law for letting me take them and he should know they are in good hands.  There were about a dozen or more other albums, but not sure I will listen to them as they aren’t something I am into.

Now with all these albums, I need a place to store them.  Lo and behold, Amazon has all sorts of stuff you can buy.  I did and two days later, I had storage for my albums with room to grow.

To go from not listening or paying attention to vinyl to now having a nice collection, I would say my new obsession is in full swing.  Heaven help me!

  1. These are the best of times. I myself have been recipient of others’ old record collections, and it just feels amazing – I know your story exactly! And you got your hands on some real gems, so it’s even more amazing.

    Happy days! Enjoy your tunes!

  2. Wow, what good fortune! Back before the days one could find so much music to stream, I would spend hours in vintage record shops digging for albums. When I moved from St Louis to Palm Springs in 2011, I wanted to downsize, so I donated a box of old albums I no longer wanted, but thankfully kept a box of classics I wanted to keep. I also kept my turntable and Bose speakers, though I don’t have a place to set them up, so they’re in boxes in the garage. The piece you bought on Amazon just might work for me though. Great post!
