My Sunday Song – “Headphones” by Matt Nathanson

For My Sunday Song #48, I am going with my favorite Matt Nathanson song called “Headphones”.  The song features singer LOLO and is off Matt’s album ‘Show Me Your Fangs’ released in 2014.  It is one of his best albums, so check it out.

The song “Headphones” for me is about putting on my headphones, listening to music and escaping.  When you listen to music, it can take all your cares in the world and throw them out the window. With music, you can feel invincible (as the song states).  The song is everything I feel about music and how important it is in my life.  Heck, I even started a blog where all I talk about is music.  I have only known this song for 3 years now, but it is the soundtrack to my feelings on music.

The song is actually about a girl who moves to the big city to have a fresh start.  Where everyone around her is concerned with trivial things, she is out there being who she is.  Her escape is music and she is happy just sitting around listening to music and not getting caught up in the madness.  Matt is great at telling stories and he knocks another one out of the park with this one.  Matt is one of the best songwriters out there and I can’t get enough of his music.  If you want to hear what Matt Nathanson says about the song, go to USAToday.com and check this article out.

Now, I want to talk about the amazing video Matt did for this song.  The video is to raise awareness of deafness across the globe and how over 360 million people suffer from hearing loss.  The video shows where Matt Nathanson joined forces with Starkey Hearing Foundation in Peru and they gave out over 1000 hearing aids to people in need.  The video is so touching and to see these kids and adults reactions when they can hear (some for the first time) is priceless.  I am sure if you wanted to make a donation, they would gladly take it. “Headphones”
(feat. LOLO)

Oh, oh (headphones on on)

Cinderella’s gone to New York City
Wants to shave her head and disappear
18 years of never feeling pretty
Says she’s finally thinking clear
Ain’t too proud to swim or drown now baby
Ain’t too proud to sink or see it through

She said
Everybody wants to be with me
I got all I need (all I need)
I feel invincible with my headphones on
Everybody posed for magazines (oh)
It’s all just noise to me (noise to me)
I feel invincible with my headphones on
Oh (my headphones, headphones)
Oh (my headphones on)

If anybody comes around to find me (oh oh oh)
If anybody asks for me she said (ah ah ah)
Tell ’em all I’m in the deep end singing (oh oh oh)
With this music in my head
Ain’t too proud to swim or drown now baby (ain’t too proud)
Ain’t too proud to sink or see it through

She said
Everybody wants to be with me
I got all I need, (all I need)
I feel invincible with my headphones on
Everybody posed for magazines (oh)
It’s all just noise to me (noise to me)
I feel invincible with my headphones on
Oh (my headphones, headphones)
With my headphones on
I feel invincible
With my headphones on

People talking in their sleep
Can’t see the forest for the trees
It’s all scratch ticket lottery (ooh-ooh) oh oh oh
Brave new world, same old crowd
Good things whisper, bad things shout
But I don’t hear ’em now (oh)

She said
Everybody wants to be with me (be with me)
I got all I need (all I need)
I feel invincible with my headphones on
Everybody posed for magazines (oh)
It’s all just noise to me (noise to me)
I feel invincible with my headphones on
Oh (my headphones, headphones)
With my headphones on
I feel invincible
With my headphones on
Oh (my headphones, headphones on)
My headphone on
I feel invincible with my headphones

  1. I like Matt Nathanson and his music, and learning that he’s worked for this cause makes me like him all the more. And I feel the same as you and the girl in the lyrics about being able to escape from some (though not all, unfortunately) of life’s worries. Great post.
