Needtobreathe – “Bridges Burn” – Single Review

Needtobreathe recently announced a new tour starting in August and a new project titled ‘Forever On Your Side (Niles City Sound Sessions)’.  The first single from that project is titled “Bridges Burn”.  Before I go into the song, let’s talk about the band.

Needtobreathe is one of my absolutely favorite bands and I am excited they are finally coming back to Charlotte as it has been awhile.  I will do my best to make it to this show even if it will be OUTSIDE…IN AUGUST…IN THE SOUTH!!  What were they thinking???  There is nothing like sitting outside in 100º weather.

Back to the music…here is what the band says about the new project…

“Forever On Your Side (Niles City Sound Sessions)” is a new collection of songs made over the course of a few weeks in Fort Worth, TX with the producer trio Niles City Sound. This music documents the season that we’re in as a band right now.

“Bridges Burn” was released as our first taste of the new music and based on this, we might be in for a real treat.  With the last album, ‘Hard Love’, the band took a slight left turn and changed their sound a little adding more electronic influences than they had ever used and departing a little from their Southern Rock / Country Rock sound.  It wasn’t my favorite album, but still ended up being really great.

For this song, I wasn’t sure what to expect.  The song opened up with some weird “da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo nonsense (it isn’t that bad once you hear the rest of the song).  I became skeptical real quick. Thankfully that was extremely short-lived.

The song then turns into a classic Needtobreathe.  The slow groove along with the piano accompaniment and Bear Rinehart’s vocals pouring out the emotion and allows you to feel everything he is releasing into the song.  They are still incorporating some electronic elements, but not enough to distract.

Needtobreathe have a way about them that draws you in, not only to the music, but the message they are conveying.  What I am getting from the song is that you need to let go of your past and everything from it that is weighing you down needs to be let go and put to pasture.  This will allow you to move forward in new directions.

The song is sensational and I couldn’t be happier with the direction this new project might take them.  Since it is a review, I would rate the song 4.5 out of 5.0. I have already added to my song playlist for contention as one of the songs of the year.

I think it is only a four-song project, but I would take four amazing songs over an album full of filler.  Give it a listen, go buy it, do everything you can to check it out.  I will give you some ways to get it below and tour dates at the bottom…

“Bridges Burn”

[Intro]
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

[Verse 1]
It’s time for moving on
There’s some things you can’t forget
It’s sinking us like a stone
I just wanna bury it

[Chorus]
I wanna watch all my bridges burn
Stand in the rain ’til the page is turned
Dance in the light of a lesson learned, lesson learned
I wanna leave everything that hurts
Never go back to the way we were
Set it on fire, baby, watch it burn, watch it burn

[Post-Chorus]
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo

[Verse 2]
Out into the unknown
We traded in our regrets
Not gonna go alone
‘Cause we’re gonna finish this

[Chorus]

I wanna watch all my bridges burn
Stand in the rain ’til the page is turned
Dance in the light of a lesson learned, lesson learned
I wanna leave everything that hurts
Never go back to the way we were
Set it on fire, baby, watch it burn, watch it burn

[Bridge]
Burn it all, set me free
And let the smoke blow on out to the sea
I need to find somewhere I can believe
I need to know there’s a chance we can be
Burn it all, set me free
And let the smoke blow on out to the sea
I need to find somewhere I can believe
I need to know there’s a chance we can be

[Chorus]
I wanna watch all my bridges burn
Stand in the rain ’til the page is turned
Dance in the light of a lesson learned, lesson learned
I wanna leave everything that hurts
Never go back to the way we were
Set it on fire, baby, watch it burn, watch it burn

[Post-Chorus]
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Da-doo, da-doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
