The Tubes – “She’s A Beauty” (The 45 Single)

In the fledgling days of MTV, they didn’t have a ton of videos so a lot of bands that weren’t getting played on the radio, suddenly had prominence on MTV simply because they had a video.  One lucky band was The Tubes with their amazing song and video for “She’s A Beauty”.  The song was released in 1983 and was off their album ‘Outside Inside’.  The song reached all the way to #10 on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to MTV.  I know I became a fan off that video and the constant rotation on MTV.  When I came across the 45 a few months back, I had to grab it.

The song was written by Fee Waybill, famed producer David Foster and Steve Lukather from the band Toto.  And the inspiration for the song came from a San Francisco peep show where Fee paid $1 to talk to a naked woman.  The conversation was rather frustrating and that frustration turned into the song.  There is a line in the song that references that conversation…”She’ll give you every penny’s worth / But it will cost you a dollar first” (thanks to Fee for discussing this in a YouTube video for the song).

The song was probably the band’s most successful and for me the song is timeless.  Even though it is in the 80’s, the song today doesn’t feel dated.  It is just as good today as it was back then.  Fee Waybill’s vocals are sensational and he comes across as a carnival barker with the opening line (the video proves that sentiment).  I also thought the guitar work was really great as well as both the solo and main song were all done by Steve Lukather.  Can’t go wrong with that.

The video is the shining piece of the song.  It was directed by Kenny Ortega who directed Dirty Dancing, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off and even High School Musical.  He also ruined Billy Squier’s life with the video he directed for “Rock Me Tonite”, but that is for another discussion.  The boy in the video is Alexis Arquette (Robert at the time) from the famous acting family.  In the video he rides a carnival ride sitting the lap of a beautiful woman (with boobs as a headrest) and sees all these beautiful woman on the ride, but can’t touch them.  The desire to have these woman, but unable to do so ages him and by the end he comes out an old man.  It is a fun little ride, but I am surprised the video made it on MTV as there were so many pictures of boobs with nipples showing.

The B-Side is nice.  It is a non-album track which at the time had never been released on any CD.  Later in 2012, it was released as a bonus track when the album was re-issued.  The song itself is not as great as “She’s a Beauty”.  It sounds like a demo as there is a little hollow sound to it, but overall it is an okay track and nice when you get a non-album track as the B-Side.  Check it out below…

Thanks for stopping by and have a great day.

“She’s A Beauty”

Step right up and don’t be shy
Because you will not believe your eyes
She’s right here, behind the glass
You know you’re gonna like her ’cause she’s got classYou can look inside another world
You get to talk to a pretty girl
She’s everything you dream about

(But don’t fall in love) She’s a beauty
(She’s one in a million girls) She’s a beauty
(Why would I lie?) Why would I lie?

You can say anything you like
But you can’t touch the merchandise
She’ll give you every penny’s worth
But it will cost you a dollar first

You can step outside your little world
(Step outside your world)
You can talk to a pretty girl
She’s everything you dream about

(But don’t fall in love) She’s a beauty
(She’s one in a million girls) One in a million girls
(Why would I lie?) Why would I lie?
(But don’t fall in love) If you do, you’ll find out she don’t love you
(She’s one in a million girls) One in a million girls
(Why would I lie?) Now why would I lie? Uh

(Step outside your world)

(But don’t fall in love) She’s a beauty
(She’s one in a million girls) One in a million girls
(Why would I lie?) Now why would I lie?
(But don’t fall in love) If you do, you’ll find out she don’t love you
(She’s one in a million girls) One in a million girls
(Why would I lie?) Why would I lie?

(But don’t fall in love)
(She’s one in a million girls)
(Why would I lie?)
