My Sunday Song – “Keep Your Eyes Open” by Needtobreathe

For My Sunday Song #168, we are going to discuss one of the band’s more popular songs called “Keep Your Eyes Open” from the 2011 album ‘The Reckoning’. The song was released as a single and even as a 5 song E.P. with two versions of this song, one being acoustic, and 3 bonus tracks, two of which end up on the vinyl release of the album.  And one of those bonus tracks we discussed as the first one in this Needtobreathe series.

The song can be interpreted in many ways.  I look at it as a song of encouragement that no matter how bad things get, keep soldiering on and pushing toward the light.  Keep those eyes open for whatever positive might come along.

It also seems to be about depression and that God is there for you if you keep those eyes open and accept him in, but I don’t think it is that easy.  Depression is a powerful force and although I think God can help maybe keep you on this side of heaven, he is not the be-all, cure-all solution as I know someone very close to me that suffers from depression and it is tough road to travel even with God fully in their life.  Okay, I might burn in hell for saying that, but sorry that is how I feel.  Unless you have been through depression or know someone who has, you don’t know the daily struggle they face.  I prefer the song as a shining example of hope and encouragement that can help you push through those dark days.

Musically, the song is stunning.  Its piano intro leads into a quiet drum roll before the drums come in full force with the rest of the band.  It then quiets down as Bear sings the first verse.  When the chorus comes in, it starts to build in to an anthem with the full band joining in again before going back to a quieter sound during the verses.  Bear’s vocals are strong and forceful, singing loudly to keep your eyes open.  The delivery is full of encouragement and his desire to help you in any way he can.  Keep fighting through as he wants you to make to the ‘”great unknown” or heaven!  As you know, suicide does not take you to heaven in a lot of the Christian beliefs.

And there you have it.  Give it a listen and let me know what you think.  Am I completely off-base?  I hope you enjoy and I hope you have a Happy Sunday!!

“Keep Your Eyes Open”

If you could soldier on
Headstrong into the storm
I’ll be here waiting on the other side
Don’t look back
The road is long
The first days of the war are gone
Take back your former throne and turn the tide

‘Cause if you never leave home, never let go
You’ll never make it to the great unknown till you
Keep your eyes open, my love
So tell me you’re strong, tell me you see
I need to hear it, can you promise me to
Keep your eyes open, my love

Just past the circumstance
The first light, a second chance
No child could ever dance the way you do, oh
Tear down the prison walls
Don’t start the curtain call
Your chains will never fall until you do

‘Cause if you never leave home, never let go
You’ll never make it to the great unknown till you
Keep your eyes open, my love
So show me your fire, show me your heart
You know I’ll never let you fall apart if you
Keep your eyes open, my love

Open up
Open up
Open up your eyes
The weight is unbroken
Open up
Open up
Open up your eyes
Keep your eyes open

Don’t let the night become the day
Don’t take the darkness to the grave
I know pain is just a place
The will has been broken
Don’t let the fear become the hate
Don’t take the sadness to the grave
I know the fight is on the way
When the sides have been chosen

‘Cause if you never leave home, never let go
You’ll never make it to the great unknown
Open up your eyes
Keep your eyes open
So tell me you’re strong, tell me you see
I need to hear it, can you promise me to
Keep your eyes open, my love
So show me your fire, show me your heart
You know I’ll never let you fall apart if you
Keep your eyes open, my love

  1. Not a bad track John. It’s amazing the amount of video these guys have out. The lyrics are deep but the music is more uptempo. Nice mix. One of the better tracks you posted from these guys.
    Great job!

    1. Thanks! I usually love the messages they deliver. They are one of the few bands I actually dissect the songs to get their true meaning. It helps the music is always great and I love Bear’s voice so a win-win-win! Sadly, only 2 more tracks to go.

      1. And likely so many more that are going through it privately.
There’s a great poster that I like to show students on the first day to remind them (and me), “Everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about. Be kind. Always”
