Friday New Releases – October 16, 2020

Each week comes faster and faster which I am thrilled only for the fact that each Friday is new release day for music. And we have another week of some great releases. There are a handful I wanted to grab hold of and listen and they are highlighted in Blue below. Let me know what you are wanting to hear and what I may have missed as there is always something good that usually gets by me and I want everyone to know what is out there. Thanks for stopping by and I do hope you have a great weekend. We will see you next Friday for the next batch of releases.

  • A1FOARuHicL._SX522_  The Struts – Strange Days – (Interscope Records): The Struts are bringing us their 3rd studio album and this one has a few very special guests. Lead off single and title track, “Strange Days”, has Robbie Williams and then “I Hate How Much I Want You” has Joe Elliott and Phil Collen from Def Leppard. If that isn’t enough, “Wild Child” features Tom Morello and “Another Hit of Showmanship” has Albert Hammond, Jr. My only complaint is I haven’t seen where there is a vinyl available. Since I have the first two on vinyl, I would like this one as well.
  • 51a4R9e5RzL._SX522_  Tommy Lee – Andro – (Better Noise Music): Motley Crue drummer, Tommy Lee, brings us a new solo album and this one seems to be hip hop…well…okay. I will give it a listen, but don’t expect much from this at all.
  • 71DzZgzCCUL._SX522_  Tom Petty – Wildflowers & All the Rest – (Warner Bros): A deluxe version with all the songs from Wildflowers plus a slew of other tracks from the Wildflower sessions and some never before released. It didn’t matter because they had me at Tom Petty.
  • 91Zju6TGWrL._SS500_  Kingdom of Giants – Passenger – (Sharptone): I don’t really know this band, but I found the single posted below to be pretty great so I am going to try this one out.

And all the rest…

  • 913x9ZCmRUL._SS500_  The Eagles – Live From the Forum MMXVIII – (Rhino / Warner)
  • 81CaeRYewJL._SS500_  Soul Asylum – Born Free E.P. – (Blue Elan Records)
  • 61mMySO3PGL._SX522_  Matt Berninger – Serpentine Prison – (Concord Records)
  • 713uqmjRUhL._SS500_  The Vamps – Cherry Blossoms – (EMI / Universal)
  • 71hrtVqJRSL._SS500_  The Damned – The Rockfield Files E.P. – (Spinefarm / Search and Destroy)
  • 71OsicapN3L._SX522_  Tanya Tucker – Live from the Troubadour – (Fantasy)

  1. The Tom Petty set looks sweet, though Harrison will disagree. Love that album, felt really fresh after the somewhat stagnant but still enjoyable Into the Great Wide Open. I think Jeff Lynne’s production hurt that album, but it sound monolithic. It was also very sentimental, and hella Lydian. That being said I love the singles, and “All the Wrong Reasons” is one of my favorite Petty deep cuts, even if it’s a virtual rewrite of “Free Fallin'” with a standard A chord instead of an Asus4 at the end of the progression. What do you think of said deep cut, JTS?

    1. *made it sound monolithic. The super 1176 compressed, cardboard box drum machine, boosted treble jangle guitars, dry vox, radio ready track/mix/master Lynne production sound in full force on that record.

If you need proof of its Lydianness (not a word)… first song “Learning to Fly” starts on an F major chord in the key of C major. The IV chord kicks it off with a Lydian sound right of the bat, because F Lydian is a scale in C Major. F Lydian is F major with a sharp 4, which is why it’s called F Lydian (also it starts on the note F). So it goes 1, 2, 3, #4, 5, 6, 7. That #4 makes the notes equivalent to a C major scale, just with a different order of the same notes.

So the chord progression in C Major is IV-I-vi-V. Or F-C-Am-G. In F Lydian that’s I-V-II-iii. Boom! Lydian as hell.

Track 2 in the key of G major. We’re jamming along in a G-D-Dsus4, G-D-G land until we get to the chord after the “I’m gonna pick you up” lyric and we get a big C chord (guess what, the IV chord). Because C Lydian has the same notes as G major.

      All notes (written in sharps): C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, A#, B

      C Major scale: C, D, E, F, G, A, B
      G Major scale: G, A, B, C, D, E, F#

What do we know about Lydian? It’s the Major scale with a #4. That means you raise the fourth note in the scale up a half-step to make it Lydian. What’s the fourth note in C Major? You guessed it. F! Raising it a half step gives you an F#, which makes it equivalent to G major, with only the order of the notes different. Hence the big jarring Lydian sound when that C chord comes into the song. Check it out! It’s fun!

The C major is at 0:14 seconds in, note the Lydian sound.

First two songs on the album, Lydian as Lydian can Lydian. Need I say more? They use a lot of Lydian on that album. It is the most popular mode. Once you recognize the sound you’ll definitely be able to hear it in songs easily after that.

    1. Yeah, I feel you on the Petty thing. I saved it to my library and will listen to it. I am going to listen to Tommy’s and we will talk about it tonight. We can talk about the Struts too as they have Lep on it and they do a Kiss Cover!!

  2. Wildflowers is my favourite Tom Petty album. I find it hilarious how he told the band that this was the best record they had ever done. So, why wasn’t The Heartbreakers given any credit, lol Anyway, the 4 CD set is $55 so I’m just going with that this week!

    1. That is kinda funny!! That isn’t too bad of a price. I will get it one day, but not on the list now. I will stream it for now as I have bought a ton of stuff lately and there is still another Record Store Day next week and there are 3 I want.

  3. I bought the Tom Petty Wildflowers 7lp vinyl boxset. The 2nd from the top with most of the music (it would have ben 300-400 dollars more to get the 9lp super deluxe top set with 16 more songs, which were mostly alternate versions, and a bunch of bobbles I do not need).
I already have Wildflowers on vinyl from the Tom Petty boxset from a few years back.
I want to hear the difference.
I read recently the ultra rare Wildflowers 1994 vinyl(which sells for around $500) was a digitally sourced album. However, the last boxset version and this 2020 version are both unique, analog sources from the original tapes.
Also The Struts sound intriguing. As for Tommy Lee, if I had any thoughts of listening to his new album they all went out the window when I watched his wife’s Tiktok video.

As for any new albums to add the only one is the new one by R.I.P.

    1. $500 for the original wow!! I think that is out of my grasp. But the new one looks great. I have streamed some of it and it is awesome. Can’t wait to finish it.
The Struts is great, Tommy’s, not so much. And I don’t have TikTok so haven’t seen that video.

      1. I do not have Tiktok. I just Googled Tommy Lee new album and that came up.
Let’s put it this way, if Fran Drescher and Cyndi Lauper’s voices were meshed, and then somehow got 10 times more annoying, they might be close to how Tommy Lee’s ditzy wife’s voice sounds.

      1. It’s funny I thought the same thing. Funny how in the internet age we need info immediately. If we don’t hear about someone for a while we assume they are dead. Especially with musicians in 2020.
