Bon Jovi – ‘Live From London’ (1995) – DVD Review (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

The band’s first live concert video, ‘Live From London’ was released in 1995 on both VHS and Laserdisc. The tour was in support of their new album at the time, ‘These Days’ and the show was from their stint at Wembley Stadium on June 25, 1995. They played several shows I believe and all to a massive crowd of 72,000 screaming fans. This isn’t the full set either as I believe some tracks were cut for time and to get the runtime down to around 90 minutes, but it is a great setlist.

The version I have is the International DVD release which was in 2003. There was a DVD release in 1998 in the US and Canada, but mine is the 2003 release. There is absolutely no difference between the VHS and the DVDs, no remastering or anything. It is the same cut. The film is directed by David Mallett and produced by Andy Picheta. These two have to reign in Jon Bon Jovi, Richie Sambora, David Bryan and Tico Torres along with touring member and studio member, but not band memer yet, Hugh McDonald.

The show kicks off with a couple of old classics with “Livin’ on a Prayer” starting the show. Richie comes out and immediately puts his mouth around the talk box and you know the song that is coming. The band kills it and like almost every song on here they don’t do a straight album version of the song, they change things up a little with either more musical breaks or longer, drawn out jams at the end of the song which makes things more interesting as you don’t know what they are going to do for each song. Then we get “You Give Love a Bad Name” and the crowd screams along with the band. Jon sound’s really great as he was still in his prime. Richie’s solo is quick and stellar and then the crowd gets involved with the chorus. Always a fun song live.

Next up should be ‘Wild in the Streets, but they cut that out and go in to “Keep the Faith” as Hugh slams that bass with the opening bass lines. Jon shakes his maracas, literally. This is another song the band jams a lot and these guys really get in to it. Jon loves shaking those maracas and Richie’s guitar work shows that he’s one of the great ones as he goes crazy on those 6 strings. They slow things down with “Always” and I think they add a whole new verse as the song is drawn out to over 7 minutes. Plus more great playing by Richie…damn I miss him not being in the band.

Then Jon brings out his acoustic guitar to do his solo song, “Blaze of Glory”. This shows as an acoustic song, but Jon is the only one with an acoustic as Richie is on the electric doing a slide guitar. Richie handles all the guitar parts as if he did them originally which he did not since this is a solo song and not a Bon Jovi song. Where is a Richie solo song??? Then they go in to the stellar live song “Lay Your Hands on Me”. Tico opens with those pounding drums with David on keyboards as they get a brief solo here. The crowd matches those beats with their arms flapping in the air. Both Richie and Jon change and put on new coats in an already hot night. That had to be unbearable. Richie pulls out the double neck guitar and Richie rocks out going absolutely nuts on the guitar. It is awesome. He and Jon race back and forth across the stage and then Richie solos some more.

Then the stage gets these four giant blow up animals or something. Two are some freaky looking dragons, one is an Elvis Devil playing guitar and the final is naked woman in high heals with giant boobs and a chicken head…what the fuck?? Totally confused and not sure the reason for these things. The band goes in to a medley for “I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” and “Papa was a Rolling Stone” as well as another medley of “Bad Medicine” and “Shout” which was a lot of fun. When the went in to “Shout” the crowd was all jumping up and down, it was quite a sight.

The band gets more serious and Jon brings up that “These Days” just kicked Michael Jackson out of the #1 spot. And to celebrate they went in to play songs from the new album starting with “Hey God” and it is another song Richie slays on the guitar. Next they go in to “These Days” I believe, but that song isn’t here as it was cut for time. So next up is “Wanted Dead or Alive”. Richie dons his long black trench coat and his famous hat. He brings out his double neck acoustic and jams a little before going in to one of their best songs ever. And to say they killed it would be an understatement.

The last song of the night is another song from These Days as they end with “This Ain’t a Love Song”. There is a point where Jon wanders around with these “oh, oh’s” and they get softer and softer as Richie plays just the right amount to accompany him. And the night is over. Sort of a downer of a closing song actually. The credits roll and then they play a video for “These Days” with footage of the night. Why? Why not just keep in the live portion of the show that played that song? Stupid in my opinion.

And that is it. No bonus material, no extra footage, no documentary, nothing else but the show. And not a full show at that as 2 songs were left off. But what was there, was a great show even if there were no songs from the first two albums which is always a crying shame they ignore that album. The boys were in great form and they were still in their prime. This is a band that is tight and play off each other so well. They look like they are having a great time being together and playing and that is all you want. My Overall Score is 4.0 out of 5.0 Stars as it is a great setlist and show. Just a few dings for no extra material and cuttng two songs.

  1. Decent set list. Too bad they didn’t add stuff to the 2003 version which is surprising. I may have saw this but once again No AJS…no deKe. Truthfully though my daughters were young and I had to watch my pennies when buying music and well Jonnie and Richie didn’t need my donation at the time or ever again for that matter (for the most part)
    Great stuff dude

  2. This can’t be right. There was a concert video before These Days, I remember taping it off MuchMusic. Later I found it on VHS.

    That closing sounds awful.

I never saw this one, because I found the previous one so boring, I never bothered!

                    1. ATBPO. Interesting. I have reviewed it but not posted it yet. I didn’t like it as much as High Road, but Tim liked it better, so I held onto it to see what I’m missing before I post.

  3. “Plus more great playing by Richie…damn I miss him not being in the band.” Same!!! This is a great show, based on the clips I’ve seen on YouTube. Richie absolutely slays in this concert. “Hey God” just kicks butt! The band should remaster this concert on Blu-ray or something because it’s their best, in my opinion.

      1. Oh heck yes, it’s one of my personal favorites. There are other people that agree. There’s a great live video from 2011 in Dublin, where at the start of the song, a guy shouts “Oh my god!” because he was so excited they were going to play “Hey God.” It’s that awesome!

  4. Blimey I’ve missed too much of this series (and I still need to ping over something to max out its length!)… BUT tuned back in at the right moment for their ’90s peak.
I remember this concert very well as it was broadcast live on Radio 1 at the time (I think there’s a line in Sleep When I’m Dead… ‘your momma’s listening on the radio’) and sat there listening and taping it at the time so have the whole thing somewhere in the garage and have always been disappointed with what’s been released as it was a) such a great show and b) so much more than this DVD – or the VHS I had of it – shows.
They played a full 22 songs on the night including Dry County, Blood on Blood and Runaway. Richie got to dust of Stranger In This Town too while Little Steven came up for Rockin’ All Over The World and Bob Geldof stepped up for I Don’t Like Mondays as a double nod to Band Aid.
For the curious, the setlist is here: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/bon-jovi/1995/wembley-stadium-london-england-bd61df2.html
It would be nice to think there’ll one day be a full version of this but I don’t know how much was captured in detail.
