Bon Jovi’s 7th Studio album was ‘Crush’ and it was released on June 13, 2000. The Japanese Edition, which I have in my collection, wasn’t released until September 27, 2000. It contained 2 Bonus Tracks, which we discussed when we went through the album on the last post, as well as an entirely new disc which is an E.P. of a live show from Osaka, Japan. The E.P. is called ‘Live from Osaka’ and that is what we are discussing today.

Before we get to that, let’s talk a little about the Japanese Edition. My copy has the OBIT strip as you can see below. That is the prize you want when you get a Japanese Edition CD. Also included, but not pictured, is a booklet that gives the lyrics to the songs in both English and Japanese as well as some commentary that is all in Japanese so I have no idea what it says. All together, it is the copy to get if you want this album…which you do! Bet you didn’t know that.

The Crush Tour started in Japan during July 2000 and this recording is taken from the July 20th show at the Osaka Dome in Osaka, Japan. There are only 6 tracks taken from the show, but it is a great snapshot of the show. We would get a full DVD from one of the stops on that tour which we will review later. It wasn’t the Osaka show, but that’s okay.

The CD opens with the classic Bon Jovi song “Runaway”, but it is done in a way that has never been before. It opens with David on piano and Jon talking a little about the song how he wrote the song 18 years earlier. The song is slowed down, done only with Jon and the piano and it changes the whole dynamic of the song. It is as if This Left Feels Right actually worked because this new interpretation really works. The song feels so dramatic and important. It is the best versioin of this song I’ve ever heard live. Yes, it is that good.

Then we get the first song from the new album with “Mystery Train” although on the insert it is spelled “Mistery Train”…close enough. They kept true to the song on the album and delivered a fine performance. A good song on the album and a good song here.

Next up is a cover of Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” and the band really slays this one live. They crank it up and go all nuts and have a lot of fun with it. Hugh McDonald’s bass groove is on point and Richie’s guitar work really goes crazy. When a band does a cover live, it needs to have the energy that this one has. One of my favorites from this E.P.

They keep the party going with what might be my favorite song on the new album and that is “Just Older”. The song is already perfect so how do you improvement it live, you really can’t so play it like it was meant to be played and they do just that. A high energy track that is nothing but fun.

Then we get to the track that gave life back to the band with “It’s My Life” and with the opening “Talk Box” by Richie, the band rocks out. I will admit that the live version doesn’t have the energy on the studio track has which is crazy to think. They do a great job with it, but I like the studio song way better.

The last track is “Someday I’ll Be Saturday Night” which is another high energy track. Since this was July 20, 2000 that would’ve been a Thursday so the song works great in that someday they will Saturday Night. I don’t think they can play this song on Saturday night, because it won’t be someday, it will be that day!. This has never been a favorite track of mine, but live it isn’t so bad. They do a fine job with it here. I like it when the slow it down and Jon starts preaching to crowd about no matter if you feel like your get up and go has got up and went, you got it dust it off and keep fighting. It was quite inspirational….no really.

And that is all. Just 6 short tracks on the E.P. A full show would’ve been great, but beggars can’t be choosy. I really enjoyed this CD and especially with that version of “Runaway” and “Rockin’ the Free World”, both a fantastic and worth getting this version specifically for those two tracks. You won’t be disappointed. I’m not going to score it, but it is worth getting. Trust me!
