Ace Frehley – The 21st Century Singles Collection: 2009-2020 – Box Set Review

MNRK Records has been going a little overboard with the Ace Frehley collection in releasing so many different color variants of his vinyl that it borderlines on the ridiculous. How many copies do you really need. Me…one!! But they have a done a couple cool things with The Space Cassette Collection and now a Singles Collection. These are at least different formats and not the same vinyl with a different color or cover. I finally picked up the Singles Collection, but only because of a massive price drop. The set was way overpriced at $125 which I think is nuts for what you get. I saw someone post on Facebook that there was a huge sale on it and so I went and snatched a copy. The price had dropped to only $40 and now it is worth the price for what you get.

There are seven 7″ Singles all with picture sleeves and colored vinyl. You get at least one single from each album starting with his 2009 comeback album ‘Anomaly’ and going all the way up to his most recent album, the 2020 covers album, ‘Origins, Vol. 2’. Most of the albums get only one single, but ‘Origins, Vol. 1’ and ‘Spaceman’ get two singles. And I think those are two of the better albums so it makes sense to me.

We won’t go in to detail of each song, but we will post pictures of everything you are getting so you have an idea of what you are really getting in the box set in case you want to buy it. You also get a digital download card of the songs and I won’t post that picture because that is my card and I don’t want anyone using it before I do. I hope you enjoy the walk through the set.

Disc One: “Outer Space”

First up is the single for the original Ace song “Outer Space” which is a classic Ace style song that really harps up the Spaceman aspect of Ace’s personae. The B-Side is off the same album and is a cover of Sweet’s song “Fox On the Run” and Ace does a really good version and makes it his own. Both songs are from the 2009 album ‘Anomaly’ which is Ace’s big comeback album after his last solo album was way back in 1989. When this album came out he was 3 years sober and Ace was back in control of his soul.

The vinyl is a beautiful, bright yellow color and the weight of these singles is impressive. Like all the singles in here, they come with an insert with the album cover on one side and the lyrics on the other.

Disc Two: “Gimme’ A Feelin'”

The second single is off Ace’s next album, the 2014 album ‘Space Invader’. Ace really turns up the notch on the Spaceman personae with this one as well. Really taking digs at the Kiss version of Spaceman with Tommy Thayer. No love loss there. The A Side is the Radio Edit of the song “Gimme A Feelin'” and is another great track from Ace. The B-Side is actually one I didn’t have as it is a Remix of the studio album track for Ace’s song “Reckless”.

This single comes in a beautifully bright orange color so there is no missing this one if it is laying around. And the insert with the lyrics is below…

Disc Three: “White Room”

This single is one of two from Ace’s 2016 covers album called ‘Origins, Vol. 1’. And yes, there will be a Vol. 2 later. The first song up is a cover of Cream’s “White Room”. There are no guests on this one as it is just Ace and drummer Scot Coogan who also helps with the vocals and does a great job. The B-Side is one of the coolest tracks on the album as it is a cover of Free’s song “Fire And Water” and it has a very special guest with Ace’s former bandmate, Paul Stanley on vocals. Damn that is so cool to say!!

The vinyl here is a stunning baby blue that actually matches the cover art perfectly. One of my favorite colors of the bunch. The insert is below…

Disc Four: “Parasite”

On to the fourth disc and this is another single from ‘Origins, Vol. 1’ and this one is pretty cool too. First, the cover is stunning with a nod to the Kiss album ‘Hotter Than Hell’ as the first song is “Parasite” which is from that album and written by Ace, but it was original sung by Gene. Now Ace is doing it with a special guitarist on the song by the name of John 5 who is very good friends with Ace and now in Motley Crue. The B-Side is another Ace Kiss song with “Cold Gin” and it has Pearl Jam’s Mike McCready as a special guest. This is the coolest single!!

And we get another blue color but this one is much darker than before. And the insert with the lyrics are below…

Disc Five: “Bronx Boy”

From Ace’s 2018 album ‘Spaceman’ (notice a them with his studio albums??), we get the first single from the album “Bronx Boy”. I have the 12″ single already for this one. The song was basically autobiographical on Ace’s life. A cool track. The B-Side is another track that looks back at his life with “Rockin’ With the Boys”. I really enjoyed both songs.

Like the 12″ Single, we get a grey color so nothing unexpected and I’m glad they stuck with the color of the original 12″ Single. The insert with lyrics is below…

Disc Six: “I Wanna Go Back”

The A-side is a cover of Billy Satellite’s song “I Wanna Go Back”, however, I remember more from Eddie Money’s cover personally. Ace does a good job with it so no complaints. And then we get another space themed song with “Mission to Mars” and I love Ace and Space theme songs, it just fits since is the original ‘Spaceman’.

Okay, I have to admit I do like the purple color vinyl here. It is royal and makes it feel special. What do I know, I just know I like it. The insert and lyrics are below…

Disc Seven: “Space Truckin'”

The final single is off his 2020 covers album ‘Origins, Vol. 2’ and the A-Side is a cover of Deep Purple’s “Space Truckin'”. I have a picture disc of this cover as well. This version is the radio edit and not on the album so a cool version to have. The B-Side sees the return of John 5 as it is a remix of the Beatles song “I’m Down”. Not my favorite track on the album, but good enough.

This one is on a cool translucent clear color so it makes it easy to see right through it. I think that is pretty cool. The insert and lyrics are below…

And that is everything. It is a pretty cool set and glad it is something a little different. I’d prefer some new music, but I’ll take this until that time comes. I still think the $125 price is way too high for this so if you want it, they have a lot of sales so wait until you can get it cheaper. I hope you enjoyed the walk through the set as I know I did. Now, one last picture with everything you get (except the digital download card).

  2. Thank you for the review. Like you, I thought $125 was way too much to pay for this box, but I was on the KISSFAQ message board earlier this week and someone had posted that this box was on sale. I clicked the link and could not believe the price had dropped to $40. I immediately pulled the trigger. Looking forward to receiving this.
