My Sunday Song – “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by Kix

For My Sunday Song #437, we are taking one of the best power ballads from the Hair Band era, “Don’t Close Your Eyes” by the band Kix. The song is off their 1988 album ‘Blow My Fuse’ and was the 5th single off the album. The song was released on May 12, 1989 and went all the to #11 on the Hot 100 just missing a Top 10 song. The song also went Gold selling over half a million copies. Donnie Purnell, from the band, was their main songwriter. He collaborated on this song with John Palumbo from the band Crack The Sky and Bob Halligan Jr., who made his mark writing songs for Judas Priest.

The song an anti-suicide song. Someone has taken a bunch of pills and called for help. The person who received the call is giving a heart wrenching plea for the caller to stay awake and not fall asleep. The person pleading to hold on tight and they are praying to the Lord to keep their soul. Help is on the way. Damn…so powerful and so dark. A power ballad that is far from a love song. The lyric of “Don’t sing your last lullaby” is so strong and hits you between the eyes. It also makes me wonder if that person didn’t make it and went to the other side. Whatever the outcome, a moving song regardless.

Musically, it opens with a piano, wind blowing and an overall very haunting opening. The guitars, the bass and the drums are all subtle, nothing overpowering as the focus is the vocals of Steve Whiteman. He really sells the story as you can hear the sadness and feel the pain of those lyrics. It feels like a very personal song to the band. There is a great instrumental break, but again, it doesn’t show off and is simply for the song, the way hit should be.

My Sunday Song – “Song For Lennon” by Shugaazer

For My Sunday Song #417, we are on to another band from Paul Laine called Shugaazer. This was a much more modern sounding Paul then we are used to and you know, I quite dig it. The song this week is called “Song for Lenon” and it is on the band’s only album, 2003’s ‘Shift’. The band consists of Paul Laine on vocals, Chris Matheson on guitar, Roland Churchill on drums and Shane Demers on bass. The song was written by Paul Laine and someone named Par. I didn’t see it in the credits but it could be either Stuart or Patrick “Par”enteau as both were thanked on the album and Patrick took the photographs used in the booklet. Paul Laine had this to say about “Song for Lenon” when he spoke to MelodicRock.com back in 2003.

“Like many others, I have always been a huge fan of John Lennon and the Beatles. I had just watched the film “Imagine” and I was very moved by his compassion for other people, as well as his love for Yoko. He had a real passion for things he felt strongly about and was not afraid to speak out about them. I was thinking to myself…I wonder what John would talk about if he was still around today…how would he see the world? How would he see his own life and the impact he had on other people? Would he still write about love and peace? I felt compelled to write a song for him expressing my own thoughts and feelings, and in a way, express some feelings that I thought he would have too, if he were still alive.”

I think that explains nicely what the song is about.

The song opens slowly, with a gentle build in the song while we listen to Lennon speaking. Paul comes in with the first verse and during that the full band kicks in. The song is a power ballad and is tender and peaceful as Lennon while the choruses are more powerful like Lennon’s impact on the world. The melodies and the layering of Paul’s vocals are so killer. You can feel the emotion he is trying to get across. Musically, a very modern rock song sound, no 80’s style this time around. The drums are powerful, the guitars are sweeping and the keys add the right amount of texture. All blended nicely together with Laine’s vocals. A very well crafted tune.

My Sunday Song – “Save Me Tonight” by The Defiants

For My Sunday Song #416, we are going back to The Defiants and this time around we are talking about “Save Me Tonight” from their self-titled 2016 album. The Defiants are Paul Laine, Bruno Ravel and Rob Marcello and basically they are Danger Danger 2.0. Better, stronger and have aged nicely. The Defiants don’t get much notice here in the States and that is too bad as songs like this show this band has the goods to take over the world. If this was the 80’s, they would be as big as Bon Jovi…at least I think they would…they are better then today’s Bon Jovi at least.

A ballad that is full of so much heartbreak and heartache. The song is about a man who is fallen so deeply in love with this woman, but she is leaving and it is over. He is in so much pain and he wants her to come back and save him and give their love one more chance. There are some great lines that highlight the pain such as “They say love never dies but it sure leaves a scar” and “And all that’s left behind is a tattoo on your heart”. A beautifully written song.

But how beautiful is it really? Is it too sappy? No, not in the least. The Defiants put on a master class on how to perform a ballad. The music is tender, heartfelt and aches with the pains of the lyrics. The opening synths give it an almost atmospheric tone like floating through the air. The guitar tone is almost weeping and that solo will leave you breathless. But the winner is those vocals by Paul Laine. The notes he hits are amazing, the angelic tones, the emotiveness of his words is crazy good. Paul is still one of the finest vocalists out there today. He still has it in spades. If you ever thought the ballad was dead…here is proof it is alive and better than ever.

My Sunday Song – “Goodbye” by DarkHorse

For My Sunday Song #414, we are going to go a little country with Paul Laine’s band called DarkHorse. The song is called “Goodbye” and is off the album called “Let It Ride” which was released in 2014, almost 25 years after his rock debut album. This is Paul’s first dive in to the Country genre and saw him head to down to Nashville and work with Steve Ohe. I don’t think the song was a single and the album didn’t do much in the charts here in the States, but it was a country album that country fans missed out on for sure.

The song is a love letter to the woman who left him for another man. He’s heartbroken and looking for closure but doesn’t know how to get that closure as she is gone and he hasn’t been album to properly say goodbye. He loved her so much that the fact she left has scarred him deeply. He wants to see her one more time even if it is just to say goodbye, but he can’t do that if he doesn’t know how why she left and if it isn’t truly over.

The song is a ballad and yes there is a country twang to it, but at its heart, the song is still a melodic rock love song. It has that 80’s rock, ballad sound with a few country guitars such as a slide and steel guitar. Paul’s vocals are so tender and heartbreakingly sad that the emotion from those lyrics oozes out. You can feel the pain he is feeling. His vocals never age and he can still hit these high notes that most artist would kill for. As far as ballads go, they don’t get much better than this. You will see it leans less country and more rock if you listen to the heart of the song.

My Sunday Song – “Another Time, Another Place” by The Defiants

For My Sunday Song #413, we are tackling the power ballad “Another Time, Another Place” by The Defiants. The song is off the band’s third and latest album, ‘Drive’ and it was written by Bruno Ravel and Paul Laine. You have Paul on vocals and keyboards, Bruno Ravel on bass and Rob Marcello on guitars with Van Romaine on drums. The song did not chart and heck I don’t even know if it was a single, but I do know that if this song was released in the mid to late 80’s it would be #1.

The song is about a love that could have been and doesn’t fall in to the abyss of a love that never was. There was someone in the past that he can’t stop thinking about and he longs for her, but they never became lovers. He dreams about that time in the future in another time and another place where that longing gets fulfilled and they fall in love and are together forever and a day. It is rather heartbreaking to want someone so much and long for them like that and yet nothing to satisfy that desire…at least not yet.

This is more like a Journey ballad as “Another Time, Another Place” might be the best ballad by any band in decades. Yes, it is that good to me. Steve Perry look out. I get lost in the chorus as Paul’s vocals will take over your ears and surround you in comfort and a magical bliss. The chorus is huge and so catchy. It draws you in and won’t let go. The scream Paul has at the end is such a surprise and so cool. I mean it isn’t Rob Halford type of cool, but still pretty awesome. The song is pure perfection again. When it comes on and I’m driving in my car, I keep hitting repeat and can never get enough. It usually accompanies for the rest of the drive. “Drive”…isn’t that the name of the album…how funny.

My Sunday Song – “Dorianna” by Paul Laine

For My Sunday Song #411, we are back to me picking the songs after a year of other people picking tracks. This next 10 song set will highlight songs from throughout the career of one of my favorite singers, Paul Laine. He has a new solo album coming out this year, so I figured it was time to celebrate Mr. Laine. We will go through his solo stuff and his work with Danger Danger, The Defiants and so much more. First up is the ballad “Dorianna” off his debut album ‘Stick It In Your Ear” which was produced by the late, great Bruce Fairbairn. The song was released in 1990 and was the first single from the album. The song went to #76 in his home country of Canada, but did not chart down here in the states. And it should’ve had.

The song was written by Paul Laine and seems to talk about the loss of relationship. One filled with promises made and never kept. A heartbreaking look at a love that ended suddenly and he is having a hard time excepting it. He misses her greatly and is holding on now to a memory. He will always love her, but it wasn’t meant to be.

“Dorianna” is the first of several ballads on the album. This ballad brings the power to the power ballad. It opens with the church organ keyboards before Paul’s stunning vocals come softly in with the first verse. He pulls out all the emotion the song requires and you will feel the love he has lost. The guitar work on this is amazing as well and it has a solo that fits the song perfectly. There is a dramatic break towards the end of the song that has some cool keyboard effects accompanying the guitar that take the song over the top and the drums on this thing are so powerful as you feel every beat. Whenever you get to the chorus, you can’t help but scream out her name as well. The song has a great groove and is very catchy and will stick in your head for days.

My Sunday Song – “I’m Not That Way” by Journey

For My Sunday Song #396, we are now on to Mike Ladano’s sixth pick and this time around it is a ballad from Journey called “I’m Not That Way”. The song is on the 2000 album ‘Arrival’ and sees singer Steve Augeri on lead vocals. Of course you still have Neal Schon and Jonathan Cain two friends that will be friends forever…cough, cough. As well as Ross Valory and Deen Castronovo two other regulars of the band. This song was written by Schon, Cain, Augeri and Kim Tribble

The song seems to be about a guy who loves awoman and that woman was with another man. But they broke up and her heart is broken. He so wants to move in and tell her he loves her and he won’t do the things her old boyfriend did as he’s not that way. But he feels it might be too soon as she is still reeling as he holds her in his arms and she is still crying over the love she just loss. Yeah, dude…probably too soon. You will be a rebound and not the deep, true love you are wanting from her. Be patient…but not too patient as she might rebound with somebody else. Just my two cents.

The song is a ballad as Journey does do those well. A slow tempo, some soft guitar picking by Neal. Augeri’s vocals are as soft and tender as Neal’s playing. You can hear Ross’ bass line lay down a smooth groove. The song though for me, doesn’t pick up enough in the chorus for me to really get connected to it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good song as it is, but I don’t know if it is enough to have kept it on the album.

Alice Cooper – “You and Me” – 7″ Single

I always love to find a good picture sleeve single and most of the ones I have are from the 80’s, however, I found a gem from 1977 that I had to have. This one was from Alice Cooper and for his hit song “You and Me” which was the first single off his 1977 album ‘Lace and Whiskey’. The album was his third solo album and his tenth overall as Alice Cooper. The single did really well going all the way to #9 on the Hot 100 chart as well as #23 on the Adult Contemporary Chart which is significant as he was considered a metal act.

The song was so popular that in 1978, Alice appeared on The Muppet Show and did the song as a duet with a bird-like character named Beakie, who was a creepy bird-ish Muppet who was actually was the embodiment of Miss Piggy after she was transformed by Cooper. If you haven’t seen it, check it out.

The song was written by Alice Cooper and Dick Wagner and it is a ballad and just a plain and simple love song. It is a celebration of the little moments in every relationship. Those little pleasures we have with each other. The song is the final in a trilogy of love songs from Alice including “Only Women Bleed” and “I Never Cry”.

In an interview with Creem magazine a few months after the release of “You and Me,” Cooper discussed the impetus behind his trilogy of ballads: “I did those songs totally out of spite,” he said. “I kept reading so many interviews and articles that I said I was never considered musical. Best rock show they ever saw, but musically lacking (songfacts).

My Sunday Song – “Before You” by Benson Boone

For My Sunday Song #364, we are now on the fourth song of Morgan’s Choice. This one is “Before You” by Benson Boone. The song is a new single for him for a yet untitled future album. The song was released about 5 months ago and it was featured on TikTok as that is where Benson has grown to fame with I am sure multiple millions of followers. Heck the video has almost 3 million views (2.9m are from my daughter I am sure). I don’t have TikTok or do I even want it, but that is where the kids today find there music and somehow my daughter came across this one. And as you’ve seen so far, she has an eclectic palate of music and this one leans to the very pop side of things.

The song was written by a whole slew of people including Casey Cathleen Smith, Jackson Lafrantz, Benson Boone and Jason Suwito. At least Benson’s name is in there as I would have lost a little respect for me as an artist. “Before You” is basically a love song. The singer can’t remember time without this person and he imagines that he was lost, alone and basically a total mess of a person. But with her/him, he is complete. He just wants to hold their hand, slow down time and spend all their time with each other. A gather since he is so smitten that this is relatively new relationship and he has on his rose colored glasses.

Being a love song, it is a ballad and is so sugary sweet. There is a nice piano accompanying Benson who actually has a nice voice. The chorus is catchy and a little ear worm if you like this type of pop. I see why the song stuck with my daughter. It is funny, there songs she loves that are so dark and gloomy and then there is this happy, go-lucky type song. I’m so glad her taste are varied. Now, this wouldn’t have been one I would’ve been drawn to, but I will admit it is a catchy pop tune and he has a good voice.

My Sunday Song – “Still Loving You” by Scorpions

For My Sunday Song #98, we take it back to the 80’s and hand it over to Scorpions with their ballad “Still Loving You” off the album ‘Love At First Sting” from 1984.  With “Rock You Like a Hurricane”, I became a Scorpion fan and this song sealed the deal for life.

The song was the second single from the album and it only reached #64 on the Billboard Hot 100 which is crazy considering this song hit #1 in France.  Yes, France.  The Scorpions are credited with starting a baby boom in France in 1985 because of this song.  I am not kidding!

The song is about a man who is in love with woman, but they fear the end of the relationship is fading and almost over. So what do they do, they try again to reignite that passion and flame and give it another shot.  France is the country about love so that might be why it did so well.

At around 6:30, the song isn’t your typical power ballad..well at least in length.  In style, it is exactly like every power ballad which is why it is a power ballad.  The song’s slow crescendo throughout the song is it’s magic.  The song keeps building and adding instruments and it gets more powerful and louder as it goes.
