The Collection: Ep. 76 – David Coverdale on Vinyl (Deep Purple to Whitesnake)

This week, we are going to explore my David Coverdale Collection on vinyl. We will start with his time with Deep Purple and go through the Whitesnake collection as well as any solo and side projects. I’ll even throw in some bootlegs and 12″ Singles. It is all things Coverdale for this episode as he is one of my favorite Rock & Roll Singers and I think I have enough stuff to go through that I think you’ll enjoy!!

Whitesnake – The Best & Worst Song From Every Album

I have done two posts already on the Best & Worst songs from every Judas Priest album and also from Cheap Trick. I really enjoyed doing that so I thought I would continue that process and this time we would go through every Whitesnake album and see what is the best song and the worst one off each album as well. Whitesnake has 13 studio albums to go through so sit back and take it all in. Now, let’s preface this with the fact that these are my choices and not necessarily yours as we can have different opinions. If you watched the show you will see that sometimes my worst song was their favorite so you never know what people like and we all like different things or this would be a very dull world. I hope you enjoy!!

‘TROUBLE’ (1978)

BEST SONG –“Belgian Tom’s Hat Trick”: The coolest song on the album and probably the best is “Belgian Tom’s Hat Trick” which is a full assault of an instrumental with 3 different solos.  One for Moody, One for Lord and One for Marsden.  I don’t see it as out of place as Purple threw in an instrumental on ‘Burn’ and this one is way better.  I really love when Jon Lord lays it down and he does just that.  The guitar’s have a riff that plays through-out that is the main feel for the song and everything is played beautifully off of that riff. No David Coverdale on this one, so sorry, but this is too killer not to include.

WORST SONG – “Day Tripper”: The worst is this horrible cover of the Beatles’ “Day Tripper”.  It is…let’s say…not good.  It is uninspiring and bluh.  The adding in of the Framptonesque Talk Box doesn’t help and I really can’t stand it.  I hope that point is coming across. Skip/Delete whatever you do, just avoid it.

My Sunday Song – “Slow An’ Easy” by Whitesnake

For My Sunday Song #209, we are going back to the first album that really broke in the states for Whitesnake and one of the songs that helped start it all, “Slow An’ Easy”.  The song was the fourth single off the album and was written by David Coverdale and Micky Moody who were the last two remaining original members of the band at the time, Micky wouldn’t last much longer as he was replaced by John Sykes before the album’s release and is guitar parts were replaced by Sykes, but that is whole other discussion.

Whitesnake was notorious at the time with critics for their “cock rock” lyrics and “Slow an’ Easy” is pretty much that to a T.  The song is about Sex!  No sugar coating it here, it is Sex!  I wish I could give you a deeper meaning to the song, but I can’t and I wouldn’t want to as the song is what it is and it is awesome!  In the 25th Anniversary edition of the album (and thanks to wikipedia), David had this to say…

“Slow & Easy was recorded at 4 in the morning in Munich after a serious night’s partying…Most of the vocals is just a live ‘jam’ lyric I made up to inspire the band as we recorded…I played around with the lyric later to try and make some sense of it…”

David Coverdale – The Albums Ranked Worst to First

Starting back on August 1st, 2019, we started the David Coverdale Series of reviews.  It was a long process and after 36 reviews, we are capping off the series with not one, but two album rankings.  The first one covered only the Whitesnake albums.  The second one, this one, will cover ALL albums that David Coverdale has done.  The list are only studio albums.  No E.P.’s, no live albums and no greatest hits.

David started his career back in 1974 with Deep Purple’s Mark III lineup on the album Burn.  Through 20 studio albums that cover Deep Purple, David Coverdale solo albums, Coverdale/Page and of course, Whitesnake, there is so much music to cover in his 46 years of music.  It was so much fun tackling this David Coverdale series that part of me hates to see it end,  but all good things come to end.

Whitesnake – The Albums Ranked Worst to First

Whitesnake started back in 1978 and was a result of David going solo after his stint in Deep Purple and he realized he enjoyed the band aspect and Whitesnake was born after 2 solo albums.  The name was taken from the title of David’s first solo album and now David is the only original member.  Hell, it was really his band anyway.  One of the few bands it doesn’t matter who is in it as long as David is singing.  If you want to read the reviews of each album, check out the list at the bottom of the post and click away and go explore each album in more depth.  Thanks

The really cool thing I discovered when I went back to compile my list is that no album saw a score of less than a 3.0 out of 5.0 Stars.  How many bands can say that.  Probably not a lot.  Enough chit chat, now let’s get started…

Whitesnake -“Give Me More Time” – Single Review (The David Coverdale Series – Bonus Review)

Back in April 2019, I was traveling in Paris with my family and I got a few minutes to visit some record stores.  While in one, I found a 12″ Single for the song “Give Me More Time” by Whitesnake.  And it turns out the version was the UK release.  So I had to go to France from the US to get a UK single.  Makes sense.

The single was the second single from the album and was released on January 3rd, 1984.  It reached #29 on the UK Charts and was never released as a single in the US.  And the fact that this is the UK Single it also the UK Mix which sounds different than the US mix.

The UK Mix has a little heavier guitar sound to open the song and all the instruments have a little more punch.  The US version, David is more front and center.  It is a fun, melodic song and David sounds great.  It has that 80’s rock sound and a classic Whitesnake swagger.

Whitesnake – ‘Slide it In’ – Album Review (The David Coverdale Series)

Recording of the ‘Slide it In’ Album started some time in 1983 and this time around Eddie Kramer was onboard to handle productions duties.  And let’s just say things did not go well, but was it a band problem (as there were ton of those) or a producer problem, I don’t know.  But Eddie was replaced quickly with longtime Snake producer Martin Birch.

The band problems were many on this record and for this tour.  Micky Moody was back and recorded the album, but things did not go well on tour and David became an ass to Micky and he had enough and quit after the European tour and his last gig was in October 1983, prior to the release of ‘Slide It In’. His replacement was John Sykes who was the guitar player for Thin Lizzy at the time.

At the same time Sykes was brought on board, Colin Hodgkinson was let go as the bass player and former Whitesnake bass player Neil Murray was brought back in to the fold.  Cozy Powell was now the drummer as Ian Paice had left after the last album and then Jon Lord left in 1984 to go reform Deep Purple so Richard Bailey was brought in to fill in.  The band was in complete disarray during this time.  It is amazing anything got done.

Whitesnake – ‘Slide It In’: the Ultimate Special Edition – Album Review

The album that broke Whitesnake in the US finally gets its ‘Ultimate Special Edition release celebrating 35 years as the original UK album was released in 1984.  35 years is crazy to think about.  In those 35 years, this album only gets better.

This special edition consists of 6 CDs, 1 DVD, 1 Book, 1 Tour Program replica and 1 Album Cover Poster.  And it has over 100 tracks amongst all the discs.  Here is everything you get.

Now of course that 100+ tracks is misleading and this set is truly for the ultimate fan.  Why?  Because the set repeats the songs a lot.  Because the set repeats the songs a lot.  Yes, I wrote that twice on purpose.

Whitesnake (Snake) – Still Of the Night Live in Battle Creek, Mich. July 26, 1987

On Black Friday, 16 members of my family went to Zoo Atlanta.  It was a great trip and some great times were had.  However, my mind was elsewhere.  I wanted to venture over to Criminal Records over in Little Five Points and check out this great Atlanta record store.  At 2pm, my daughter and I were going to leave are family behind and head over to the store.

While at the Zoo, we missed the new Reptile house and we were planning on going back around to check it out before we left.  Well, being at the zoo with 16 people and a lot of those people are children, it was very slow going.  2pm started creeping up on us and I started to think, we weren’t going to make it to the reptile house and of course, we didn’t.  I was a little disappointed I didn’t get to see any of the “Snakes”.
