#TBT – The Coolest Songs of the 80’s – Playlist

The 80’s was a great time in music for me. It was the time I started really getting obsessed about with it.  There were so many great songs, thanks to the dawn of MTV, during this time. They exposed us to so many more bands that our radio stations were not playing.

There are good songs, great songs, rock songs, dance songs, pop songs and some songs that are just too damn cool.  This list is what I felt were the really cool songs of the decade.  Cool could be the subject matter or the overall sound of the song and of course it is very subjective.  I wasn’t very cool back in the day so my definition of cool might not equal yours.  Come to think of it…I am not cool now.  Oh well, I hope you enjoy the playlist.

Red Rider – “Lunatic Fringe”

The Police – “Synchronicity II” (sorry, couldn’t find the original video)

Golden Earring – “Twilight Zone”

Billy Joel – “Pressure”

Genesis – “Mama” (no original video found)

Hall & Oates – “Maneater”

Peter Gabriel – “Shock the Monkey”

Saga – “Wind Him Up”

A Flock of Seagulls – “I Ran”

Phantom, Rocker & Slicker – “Men Without Shame”

Queen – “Princes of the Universe” – (Highlander was so cool!! “There can be only one!”)

  1. YAAASSS! You pulled some killers! Freddie Mercury and Queen? Whaaa? There is no touching Freddie Mercury’s unique vocals-none!
Hall and Oates, The Police, Billy Joel, Genesis! I love it! How ’bout Duran Duran? I loved those guys.
As for the Police, my faves are Spirits in the Material World, Canary in a Coal mine, Every little thing she does is magic!
    Love this post!
    Great job!

    1. I didn’t think of a “cool” song for Duran Duran but now that you mention it, “Girls on Film” and “Wild Boys” we’re pretty cool. Queen is the best!! One of my all time favorite bands. Glad you liked the post!!

      1. “RIO” comes to mind for Duran Duran. I also loved, “New Moon on Monday” and “Union of the Snake.”
I am very flexible with music, I do this series called ‘My Jams’ but it is solely about soul and R&B; that said, I have just as many rock jams. I like the old and the new! I am a hardcore George Harrison fan. I’ve had ringtones for “Something” and “Here comes the Sun.” Whenever they go off people be looking at this Black girl like she CRAZY!

          1. Thank you! I love it “Sun, sun, sun, here it comes!” I remember hearing that it has the flow of a mantra. I can definitely see that being the case.
