For our next edition of ‘The Original vs. The Cover’, we are going to cover the classic driving song “Radar Love” by the band Golden Earring. The song was released in 1973 and was the only U.S. single off their album ‘Moontan’. The song did very well and went as high as #13 on Billboard, but went Top 10 in numerous other countries including the UK and Canada.
The song was written by George Kooymans and Barry Hay of the band. It is about a guy that feels so he is so connected with this girl that it is like telepathy. He calls it “Radar Love”. She wants him so badly that he is trying so hard to get home as fast as he can and he is driving so fast and so recklessly to get there. As a result, this song is considered one of the Top Driving songs of all time. I can attest to that fact. It does makes you want to drive fast.
Now, I have also heard that the “Radar” part is really the use of CB Radio and she was calling over the CB for him to get home because she was lonely. Either way it works. Now there is a line that says “And the newsman sang his same song / One more radar love is gone” which makes think that when he passed that last car in the lyrics, he was killed in a car crash which I never picked up on before. Gives it an interesting twist if true.
Now let’s get to the song…

Happy Friday. Welcome to the end of another long work week and hopefully something released today will fit your needs. Not much out this week, but a couple to look forward to for me. They are highlighted in Blue.
- Alison Krauss – Windy City – (Hokker, Inc): Hard to believe that this is her first solo release in 18 years. Sadly it is only a covers album and not original material. I will take what I can get from this bluegrass/country superstar.
- Ryan Adams – Prisoner – (PaxAmericana Recordings): Ryan hasn’t waited 18 years for his next solo release. He has only waited about 3 years. For him, this is his 16th studio album. That seems crazy, but he does put out a lot of albums as he averages about 1 album a year. I am sure it will be interesting as his usually are.

The 80’s was a great time in music for me. It was the time I started really getting obsessed about with it. There were so many great songs, thanks to the dawn of MTV, during this time. They exposed us to so many more bands that our radio stations were not playing.
There are good songs, great songs, rock songs, dance songs, pop songs and some songs that are just too damn cool. This list is what I felt were the really cool songs of the decade. Cool could be the subject matter or the overall sound of the song and of course it is very subjective. I wasn’t very cool back in the day so my definition of cool might not equal yours. Come to think of it…I am not cool now. Oh well, I hope you enjoy the playlist.
