Bon Jovi – “Please Come Home For Christmas” (1994) – CD SINGLE (The Bon Jovi Collection Series)

In 1992, Jon Bon Jovi did a cover of the Charles Brown song “Please Come Home For Christmas”. It was released on the Christmas album ‘A Very Special Christmas 2’ of that same year. Two years later, the band re-released the song as a charity single in Europe for the Specal Olympics. This time, they branded the song under the Bon Jovi label rather than as a Jon solo release even though no other Bon Jovi member was on this song. The CD Single was released on December 5, 1994 and the single did reach #7 on the UK Chart where it went Silver selling over 200,000 copies.

The version I have is the European version with a wonderful picture of Cindy Crawford and Jon on the cover for which a video was made with her as well. The CD Single also had two other Christmas songs from the band including “I Wish Everyday Could Be Like Christmas” and the other was “Back Door Santa”.

“Please Come Home For Christmas” is a real soulful version. The Eagles covered this song so Charles Brown has a popular little song. Charles was a Blues singer and that comes across in the Jon version as well as he does his version of blues. The guitar work is pretty good too. I have to admit, this isn’t a bad cover at all. I think you’d like it.

The second track is “I Wish Everyday Could Be Like Christmas” and is actually an original track. It was the B-Side for the single “Keep the Faith” and it sounds like it came from that era of the band. It isn’t a bad song at all, but it doesn’t ring out as a classic Christmas song. It definitely does cause Mariah Carey to lose any sleep over her getting knocked off as Queen of the Christmas song.

The final track is another Christmas cover song and this one is “Back Door Santa” which was done and written by Clarence Carter. This was on the album “A Very Special Christmas” back from 1987 and is actually a live version done on The Slippery When Wet Tour. Jon really sings it with gusto, but the keyboards on it are really awful. Richie’s solo is worth a listen, but that is really the only thing redeeming about it. There are a bunch of ho, ho ho’s and hey, hey hey’s, but it is really not good. Doesn’t make me feel all Christmassy at all. Not my favorite of the three tracks.

And there you have it. I bought this so I didn’t have to buy the two Christmas albums that two of the tracks are on and plus it had Cindy Crawford on the cover. That alone was worth the purchase. I hope you enjoyed the walk through this piece in the collection. Now, back to the regularely scheduled reviews.
