Wolfmother – The Albums Ranked Worst to First

It is time for another Album Ranking and this time we are doing the Aussie band Wolfmother. Since they only have 5 studio albums, I threw in the 2 solo albums by lead singer, Andrew Stockdale. I had to since Wolfmother is really just Andrew Stockdale anyway. The band broke on to the scene back in 2005 and brought back the old 70’s style metal with the black sabbath type lyrics, distorted guitars as well as some psychedelic wonderment. The band has had numerous line-up changes and the only constant is Andrew so we might as include his solo albums as they aren’t that too far removed from the Wolfmother sound.

For me, I love their sound as it brings back so many memories of the 70’s metal bands. I dig the distortion and that high pitched howl of Stockdale. The band wore their influences on their sleeves and although not original sounding, their sound felt fresh and alive. As a result, I wanted to bring you a list of how I rank their albums from Worst to First and away we go…

THE WORST – ‘NEW CROWN’ (2014):

Friday New Releases – September 14th

Okay, sit back and get ready for a ton of new music today.  There are an abundance of albums to choose from today so hopefully there is something for you.  My tastes this week are all over the board from Rock to Country to Christian Pop to Alternative to Tony Bennett (he is a category all his own).  My choices are in Blue.  Let me know what does or doesn’t interest you and let me know what I missed.  Happy listening and have a great weekend.

  • 81TVE9D0ABL._SX522_  Monster Truck – True Rockers – (Mascot Records):  The band’s last album ‘Sittin’ Heavy’ was amazing and really got me into this band.  The first song I heard on this one didn’t excite me, but this will probably be the first one I listen to this morning.  Hopefully the rest of it packs a punch and gives me more of what I love from the band which is gritty and dirty straight up rock & roll.

  • A1w1VtfribL._AC_UL115_  Carrie Underwood – Cry Pretty – (Universal Music Group):  Don’t judge me, I like Carrie Underwood.  She is a guilty pleasure and I am not afraid to admit it.  She has an incredible voice and her rendition of “How Great Thou Art” will move you to tears.  Anyway, I am looking forward to another release by her so keep them coming Carrie.

The Debut: Wolfmother – ‘Wolfmother’

Welcome back to the second episode of “The Debut”.  For this round, we talk about another retro rock band out of Australia called Wolfmother.  The name alone would have made me listen to this album, but it is certainly the music that has kept me coming back again and again.

Like Jet, Wolfmother is not the most original band out there.  The band has been accused of ripping off some of the great metal bands of the 60’s & 70’s, most especially Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and even a little Jimi Hendrix.  If you were into those bands, than this album is something for you.  If you need a comparison to some more recent bands, I can hear a little White Stripes as well, but mostly for me it is Sabbath with Plant vocal stylings.

They also stick to themes you would have expected from that era as well.  You get mystical unicorns, vagabonds, pyramids, witches and so much more.  To hear this heavy, distorted and screaming guitars and listen to the Zeppelinesque song stylings at the time were like nothing else on the radio.  It took me back to a good place and I have never stopped loving this album.  I enjoy it just as much today as a did upon its release in the States back in 2006.
