For My Sunday Song #442, we are talking “Baby, It’s Tonight” by Jude Cole. If you saw last week’s post, you know that song and album was produced and co-written by Jude Cole. I figured, let’s do a song by Jude before he became a producer. And we go back to 1990 when “Baby, It’s Tonight” was #16 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song was written by Jude and was the second single off his 2nd album ‘A View From 3rd Street’. I do love my pop music and back in the early 90’s I devoured Jude’s songs and albums.
This particular song is about a relationship that didn’t last. The split too soon and didn’t even get to say what needed to be sad. The singer is really lonely and he is thinking about her and wants to be with her badly. He tries calling but she won’t answer. I think his desire to be with her isn’t all physical, I think emotionally he wants to connect with her again. He loved her and regrets all the mistakes that were made. A heartbreaking song that musically doesn’t feel that sad.
The music is upbeat and quite the opposite of being sad. It is bouncy and simply pops. It has a great soft opening with only guitars picking away and then the band fully comes in and off we go. The chorus is huge and is really catchy. Give me a good hook, I’m all in.
For My Sunday Song #419, we have another song from The Defiant’s. This time around it is “Fallin’ For You” from the bands second album, ‘Zokusho’. It was written by Paul Laine and his buddy Bruno Ravel. If you thought the first album was good, then this one will not disappoint. A band that is celebrating that 80’s rock sound and this particular song is all that and more. This one was a single and even had a video. You gotta love that.
Lyrically, the song is about a woman that comes in to his life when he wasn’t looking for love. Heck, she wasn’t either as she just got out of a relationship. They were both wrong place, wrong time, but the heart wants what the heart wants. He has fallin’ for her hard and wants to know what to do. How can they make it work despite everything saying it can’t. A classic love story that has been in every Rom-Com out there.
With a little keyboard opening and then a gritty guitar riff, we get a classic Danger Danger style rocking love song. You get swept up in those big choruses, catchy hooks and that Paul Laine vocal. He was made for these type of songs. The guitar solo is huge, crazy riffs, fast flying fingers. It all screams 80’s and I scream along with it…Hell Yeah!!! A fun song that will get stuck in your head for days.
Give the song a listen and tell me that music doesn’t take you back to the 80’s. 80’s music was the best as it was the most fun and I am thrilled The Defiants are celebrating that sound. It makes you feel so good. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoyed this week’s song. Have a wonderful and Happy Sunday!!
“Fallin’ For You”
I wasn’t looking for somebody to love me I wasn’t waiting for a second chance You know I’ve never really been that lucky I’d given up trying to understand You were getting over some old heartbreak You never counted on me walking through your door, yeah
I didn’t know I was waiting for you It’s out of my hands and there’s nothing I can do
Girl, I can’t help it (I can’t help it) There’s something in the air tonight I just wanna tell you (wanna tell you) That my heart’s got nothing to hide I can’t hold back even if I tried Tell me what I gotta do ‘Cause girl, you got me Fallin’ for you (fallin’ for you) What’s a boy to do? (Fallin’ for you) You got me fallin’, fallin’ for you, oh
I was runnin’ in the wrong direction I was headed down a dead end road In the mirror was my own reflection Telling me you’re better off alone All I knew is there was someone for me Someone out there with a heart that beat like mine, oh
You were the one I was dreaming about I’m head over heels and there ain’t no doubt
Girl, I can’t help it (I can’t help it) There’s something in the air tonight I just wanna tell you (wanna tell you) That my heart’s got nothing to hide I can’t hold back even if I tried Tell me what I gotta do ‘Cause girl, you got me Fallin’ for you (fallin’ for you) And there ain’t no use (fallin’ for you) You got me fallin’, fallin’ for you
‘Cause that’s the thing about love when you find it Try to hold on and never let go It’s the chance that you take Between love and fate And only your heart will know
I didn’t know I was waiting for you It’s out of my hands and there’s nothing I can do You were the one I was dreaming about I’m head over heels and there ain’t no doubt
Girl, I can’t help it (I can’t help it) There’s something in the air tonight I just wanna tell you (wanna tell you) That I’m ready to give you this heart of mine I can’t hold back even if I tried Tell me what I gotta do ‘Cause girl, you got me Fallin’ for you (fallin’ for you) Girl, I’m stuck on you (fallin’ for you) (Fallin’ for you) and there ain’t no use
what’s a boy to do? (Fallin’ for you, fallin’ for you) oh girl, you got me fallin’ (Fallin’ for you) hey (fallin’ for you) oh, oh, I’m fallin’ (Fallin’ for you, fallin’ for you) fallin’ for you (Fallin’ for you) fallin’ for you (fallin’ for you) fallin’ for you (Fallin’ for you) yeah, you know I can’t help it (fallin’ for you) Oh, I wanna tell you (fallin’ for you) There’s something in the air tonight (fallin’ for you) hoo
For My Sunday Song #389, we are almost to the end of Tim’s Choices and this time around is a cover song for Tesla called “Run Run Run”. It was originally done by Jo Jo Gunne in 1972 and written by Matt Andes and Joe Ferguson. It was only released as a B-Side on the CD Maxi Single for “Love Song” in 1990 so never on any of the band’s albums.
The song, lyrically, is very simple and seems to be about a guy who might be on the run from the law and needs to get to the border or the state line to get away from them. Nothing more than that. Pretty simple, right!
The band has fun with it. They keep to the spirit of the song but bring in to the 90’s with the sound as the original is very 70’s sounding. Jeff Keith’s vocals have such a cool grit that it really makes the song jump. The guitar work by both Tommy Skeoch and Frank Hannon scream and make the song feel like the song is really racing. The rhythm section of Brian Wheat on bass along with Troy Lucketta on drums also drives the song forward. You can feel the pressure and intensity of the guy running from the law. And then the song ends with a massive build up and bam, it’s done. A great, fun track by an incredible underrated band!
For My Sunday Song #366, we are on Morgan’s 6th choice and this time is Stephen Sanchez’s sweet song “Until I Found You” off his 2022 album ‘Easy on My Eyes’. The song was released on September 1st 2021 and it went to #23 in the US and has been certified platinum multiple times over. Stephen wrote the song all by himself and isn’t cool when you have an artist that can write his own songs (yes that was a dig at some of her choices so far). There is a solo performance of the song and one with Em Beihold and both versions are just stellar. You can’t go wrong with either.
I usually talk about the song means, but Stephen knows best so I will let him discuss it…Stephen Sanchez shared with PLNK WIFI the story behind “Until I Found You” released on the 1st of September, 2021, “When I met my girlfriend Georgia, I was in the worst place ever. She was so loving and great to me though. I didn’t feel good enough for that, so I pushed her away. We spent some time apart. She was in Virginia. I was in California. A month before I moved to Nashville, we reconnected over the phone, I drove up, took her on a date, and we’ve been together ever since. I wrote ‘Until I Found You’ to let her know how much I love her, and to let her know I knew how much of an idiot I was when I let her go the first time.”
Musically, the song is so old-school with an old-50’s style sound and even a hint of The Beach Boys. It makes the song so warm and inviting and I have to admit I think it is quite awesome. That twangy guitar and those brilliant drum fills are nothing are so sweet and tender and match the emotion of the song. I really dig this one and thinks you have to really listen to it to appreciate what I have said and see for yourself.
For My Sunday Song #364, we are now on the fourth song of Morgan’s Choice. This one is “Before You” by Benson Boone. The song is a new single for him for a yet untitled future album. The song was released about 5 months ago and it was featured on TikTok as that is where Benson has grown to fame with I am sure multiple millions of followers. Heck the video has almost 3 million views (2.9m are from my daughter I am sure). I don’t have TikTok or do I even want it, but that is where the kids today find there music and somehow my daughter came across this one. And as you’ve seen so far, she has an eclectic palate of music and this one leans to the very pop side of things.
The song was written by a whole slew of people including Casey Cathleen Smith, Jackson Lafrantz, Benson Boone and Jason Suwito. At least Benson’s name is in there as I would have lost a little respect for me as an artist. “Before You” is basically a love song. The singer can’t remember time without this person and he imagines that he was lost, alone and basically a total mess of a person. But with her/him, he is complete. He just wants to hold their hand, slow down time and spend all their time with each other. A gather since he is so smitten that this is relatively new relationship and he has on his rose colored glasses.
Being a love song, it is a ballad and is so sugary sweet. There is a nice piano accompanying Benson who actually has a nice voice. The chorus is catchy and a little ear worm if you like this type of pop. I see why the song stuck with my daughter. It is funny, there songs she loves that are so dark and gloomy and then there is this happy, go-lucky type song. I’m so glad her taste are varied. Now, this wouldn’t have been one I would’ve been drawn to, but I will admit it is a catchy pop tune and he has a good voice.
For My Sunday Song #100, we are ending the Power Ballad set with a true classic, Whitesnake’s “Is This Love” off the 1987 album simply known as ‘Whitesnake’ or ‘1987’. The song reached all the way to #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and helped propel Whitesnake into the stratosphere of rock stardom.
This midtempo power ballad was written by David Coverdale and the great guitarist John Sykes. They wrote it during the writing sessions for the album in one of the worst places you could possible be, the south of France (read as sarcasm). They recorded in David’s villa called Le Rayol. It must have been rough.
The song was actually going to be used for Tina Turner until Geffen heard the song and quickly put the brakes on that. Although David thinks Tina would still have been great for the song and you know I think he is right.
Just a few short weeks ago, Matt Nathanson brought us a Def Leppard Tribute E.P. titled ‘Pryomattia’ which was a really nice surprise and damn near perfect. Well, now Matt brings us an actual new song called “Way Way Back” which is supposed to be from a yet unannounced new album coming “soonish” as Matt puts it.
If there is one thing Matt Nathanson can do and that is write a great song. The man has a way with lyrics and he delivers another sensational song. The story is of a love lost but letting that person know that they won’t find someone that loves them as much as you did. That when they realize what they lost they can find you in their memories.
I love lyrics like “Didn’t know that forever only meant forever till you found someone better” which is what I think most people really believe. And “Radio just wanna hurt me, put you in every song” as who hasn’t gone through a break-up and every song on the radio reminded you of that person. The song is so relatable and Matt has a way of making everything simple and crystal clear.
It is a love song that only Matt can write. It is a fun, catchy little tune that will get you singing and “do-do-doing” right along. If this is any indication of what is to come on the new album, I guess Matt will get more of my money as this will go on pre-order immediately when available…in vinyl of course!!
I would give this one 4.5 out of 5 stars if I had to rate which I guess I do since this is a review. Give it a listen or go buy now and help support the artist. It is the least you can do so we keep getting great new music from them.
Richie Sambora & Orianthi (or RSO for short) have put out two E.P.’s and now give us two new singles just in time for Valentine’s Day (now this is a little past Valentine’s Day, but that was when I first heard it). They give is the incredible Sonny & Cher cover of “I Got You Babe” and a new single called “Forever All The Way”.
First off, we will focus on “I Got You Babe”. Now, I have to admit, I have been waiting for a great cover of the Sonny & Cher classic song. Sadly, this isn’t it. In fact, no one is waiting for a cover of “I Got You Babe”. I am sorry to admit this is dreadful. Is that harsh? I am sorry, but it is. I give them credit for trying a few things different with it. They definitely bring into the modern era for sound and they try to rock it out. It doesn’t work. It was a cheesy song before and it is still a cheesy song now.
I know they are happy together and it is supposed to be a fun song, but there is nothing redeeming about it that will make me ever want to listen to this drivel ever again. I liked their last E.P., “Making History”. This goes in completely the wrong direction from what they accomplished with that one.
